Here is my translation of the hymn, “Die Schrift zeigt uns an klar und hell” (N. Herman, 1560), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for the feast of St. James, from the Gospel reading in Matt. 20. Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel.: Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort.

 

THE Scripture shows us bright and clear

The saints’ deficiency and fear,

How oft they, stumbled, strayed, and fell,

Committing grievous sins as well.

2 All this was written for our good,

That we might watch, as well we should,

Nor live presumptuous, sure, and free—

Thus teach the sons of Zebedee.

3 They wished to have some special part,

Pride and vainglory seized their heart,

They wished for worldly crown and seat,

Which for the preacher is not meet.

4 They had a notion without ground,

That Christ our Lord would only found

A temp’ral kingdom in this world,

But their proud hope to earth was hurled.

5 Each one would sit on either hand,

And rule with Him both folk and land,

“Ye know not what ye ask (saith He)

Nor what thing ye desire of Me.”

6  He that will of My kingdom share

My cup with Me must drink and bear,

And with My baptism baptized be,

No rosy life here shall he see.

7 He here in time must much endure,

Who would with Me be e’er secure;

He oft must the bitter drink must know,

So that his eyes with tears o’erflow.

8 Yet no man in My kingdom e’er

With Me an equal rod shall bear,

The winepress I must tread alone,

And I Myself rule o’er Mine own.

9 The other Ten were angered sore,

But Christ gave them this holy lore,

And said: “My dear disciples, ye

Shall not as worldly rulers be.”

10 God did in other ways ordain

The rulers in this world to reign,

And prince and lord set by His hand

To foster peace throughout the land.

11 Therefore He grants them pow’r and might,

And pomp and honorific right,

And gracious titles in their place—

Blest, he who shows His people grace!

12 With you it shall far diff’rent be,

Ye shall have no such majesty:

For who among you would great,

Let him serve all in humble state.

13 Nor did I come by humble birth,

That men might serve Me here on earth,

But that I might in service live,

And life for all a ransom give.

14 Lord Jesus Christ, our thanks to Thee

That Thou art kind, of mercy free,

And patient with our weakness here,

As fathers do their children dear.

Die Schrift zeigt uns an klar und hell

der lieben Heilgen Mangl und Fell,

wie sie oft sehr gestrauchelt han

und große, grobe Sünd gethan.

2 Solchs ist geschrieben uns zugut,

daß wir uns haltn in guter Hut,

sind nicht vermessen, sichr und frei,

das lern uns die Söhn Zebedei.

3 Sie wollten auch was sonders sein,

Hoffart, Ehrgeiz, ihr Herz nahm ein,

hätten auch gern weltlich regiert,

welchs Predigern gar nicht gebührt.

4 Es was bei ihn ein falscher Wahn,

Christ unser Herr wurd fahen an,

ein zeitlich Reich auf dieser Welt,

aber ihr Rechnung weit ihn fällt.

5 Jeder wollt sitzn zu einer Hand,

helfen regieren Leut und Land,

da sprach Jesus: Ihr wisset nit,

was ihr begehert und von mir bitt.

6 Wer Theil will han an meinem Reich,

der muß den Kelch mit mir zugleich

trinken, sich mit mir täufen lan,

er wird hie nit auf Rosen gan.

7 Hie zeitlich muß er leiden viel,

wer bei mir ewig wohnen will,

und oft ein saures Trünklein thun,

daß ihm sein Augen übergan.

8 Dennoch wird mir in meinem Reich

nimmermehr jemand sietzen gleich,

die Keltern muß ich tretn allein,

und selbs regieren mein Gemein.

aber Christ gab ihn diese Lehr,

10 Gott hat ihm andre Weg bestellt,

Fürsten und Herrn erkiest darzu,

11 Drum gönnt er ihn die große Macht,

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wie holdselig seind doch die Füß” (N. Herman, 1580), from the author’s revised and expanded Sontags-Evangelia, for the feast of the Division (or Dispersion) of the Apostles, observed on the 15th of July.

HOW beautiful and fair the feet,

How kindly and exceeding sweet

The preachers’ voice of truth and cheer,

Which bring good doctrine to our ear.

2 Souls hear of peace and righteousness

Salvation too and blessedness,

With pardon for iniquity

Which Christ gained us eternally.

3 When Jesus His dear twelve dispersed

To teach throughout Judea first,

He bade them through the land to stray

But not into the Gentiles’ way.

4 To them He also clearly saith

Ye shall not teach My Word and faith

In any cities of those lands

Belonging to Samaritans.

5 But seek My sheep that wander free

In Israel, so dear to Me;

Go first into their house and tent,

For whose good I was firstly sent.

6 Say unto them that now at hand

The heav’nly kingdom here doth stand,

The sick among them heal and cure,

The lepers cleanse, their skin make pure.

7 Raise up the dead from deathly sleep,

And where the devils lodging keep

Thence cast them out, and naught receive,

But give, as God you freely gave.

8 And when ye pass some city wall

Or humble gate of village small,

Inquire there who may worthy be,

9 No purse, no money, silver, gold

And to Judea sent them first.

And bade them o’er the world to roam,

And cry aloud the Word of God

To every heathen race abroad.

21 For this, Lord Christ, our thanks to Thee,

That Thou didst come incarnately,

And hast made known to us Thy Word;

Wie holdselig seind doch die Füß,

wie freundlich ist nur und gar süß,

der Prediger Stimm, Trost und Lehr:

die uns bringen die gute Lehr.

2 Vom Fried und von Gerechtigkeit,

der Seelen Heil guten Bescheid,

von Ablaß aller Missethat,

den uns Christus erworben hat.

3 Da Jesus sein Jünger aussandt,

zu lehren in das Jüdisch Land,

da hieß er sie vornehmlich das,

zu meiden dann der Heiden Straß.

4 Zu ihnen er auch klärlich spricht,

ihr sollt nun mein Wort lernen nicht,

in Städten und Märkten voraus,

die von der Samariter Haus.

5 Sucht meine Schaf, die seind verlorn

in Israel, den ich erkorn,

zu den erstlich all ziehet hin,

den ich zugut gesendet bin.

6 Sagt ihnen, daß kommen herbei,

das Himmelreich, und nahet sei,

und macht ihn ihr Kranken gesund,

den Stummen löst auf ihren Mund.

7 Vom Aufsatz die Leut machet rein,

treibt Teufel aus in ihrer Gmein,

die Toten ihr aufwecken sollt,

nehmt darum weder Geld noch Gold.

8 Dann ihr es habt von Gott umsunst,

wann ihr kommt in ein Stadt mit Gunst,

kehrt wieder ein der Fried zu euch.

11 Wo euch ein Stadt oder ein Haus

nicht annimmt, so geht wieder aus,

den Staub schüttlet von Füßen ab,

daß sie der Straf ein Zeugnis hab.

12 Wie Sodoma, thut sie mit Buß,

den Unglauben sie büssen muß,

ja, es wird ihr ärger ergehn,

wird Sodoma vor ihr bestehn.

13 Ich send euch aus wie Schaf in gmein,

unter die Wölf des sollt ihr sein,

wie Schlangen klug, doch gar ohn List,

wie Tauben, simpel zu der Frist.

14 Vor Menschen euch wohl sehet für,

oft werdt ihr vor die rotte Thür

vor Rath müssen, und Oberkeit,

man wird euch thun in Schulen Leid.

15 Doch sollt kein Sorg ihr tragen gar,

wie und was sei zu reden klar,

mein Geist wird sein in eurem Mund,

und reden vor euch zu der Stund.

16 Wird hassen euch all Welt ohn Scham,

und sein um meinetwillen gram,

wer an das End wird standhaft sein,

der wird sein ein Miterbe mein.

17 Seid ihr verjagt aus einer Stadt,

in ein andre geht fort mit Rath,

was sie gethon dem Meister mir,

den Jüngern wird man thun hinfür.

18 Der mich bekennt vor Menschen frei,

ohn alle Furcht und Heuchelei,

den will ich vor dem Vater mein

an jenem Tag bekennen frei.

19 Das ist die recht Instruction,

die sein Jüngern gab Gottes Sohn,

da er sie aus zu lehren sandt,

zuerst in das Jüdische Land.

20 Nach dem auch kam der heilig Geist,

in alle Welt gehn er sie heißt,

frei rufen aus sein göttlich Wort,

auch den Heiden an allem Ort.

21 Des dankt man dir Herr Jesu Christ,

daß du in das Fleisch kommen bist,

hast uns dein Wort auch kund gethan;

hilf, daß wir es recht nehmen an.
