Durch Christum haben wir

Here is my translation of the hymn “Durch Christum haben wir / zu Gott ein solch Vertrauen” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Trinity XII, a paraphrase of the Epistle, 2 Cor. 3:4–11.

 Or: O Gott, du frommer Gott.

THROUGH Christ to God-ward we possess such trust abiding;
Not that we in our pow’r may build or be confiding,
As though of our own selves we could accomplish aught,
But our sufficiency God gives, or it is naught.

2 God us sufficient makes to bear the ministration
Of this new testament; God must direct our station;
’Tis not the letter’s work, the Spirit doth it drive;
The letter doth condemn, the Spirit makes alive.

3 But was that office dread, in stones of old engraven,
Which by the letter kills, so great a glory given
That Isr’el could not bear on Moses’ face to gaze,
How shall the Spirit’s not give forth more glorious rays?

4 The ministration of the Law hath ceased forever;
The Gospel’s must abide, whose balms will fail us never.
The Law condemns and kills, but grace and help from woe
The ministration of God’s grace to us doth show.

5 If that be glorious which condemneth men, yet ceaseth,
Then far more glorious that which righteousness increaseth,
And ever doth remain. What glorious seemed before
Is naught: ’tis done away; grace shines forevermore!

Durch Christum haben wir zu Gott ein solch Vertrauen,
nicht daß wir tüchtig sind auf unsre Kraft zu bauen,
als ob wir von uns selbst was könnten richten aus,
denn daß wir tüchtig sind, gibt Gott, sonst wird nichts draus.

2 Gott macht uns tüchtig noch das werthe Amt zu führen
des Neuen Testaments, Gott muß uns selbst regieren,
weils nicht Buchstabens Werk, es ist des Geistes Amt,
der Geist macht lebend, wenn der Buchstab gleich verdammt.

3 So des Gesetzes Amt das tötet durch Buchstaben
in Stein gebildet ist, doch konnte Klarheit haben,
daß man nicht sehen konnt des Mosis Angesicht,
wie sollt des Geistes Amt die Klarheit haben nicht?

4 Jens hörte auf, dies muß allein beständig bleiben,
das Evangelium bring Trost, der kann bekleiben,
wenn das Gesetze dräut Verdammnis und den Tod,
so zeigt das Gnadenamt die Gnad und hilft aus Noth.

5 Ist das Gesetze klar, das die Verdammnis lehret,
so ists viel klärer, was Gerechtigkeit vermehret,
das überschwänglich ist, was dort war hell und klar,
ist nichts, es höret auf, die Gnad scheint immerdar.
