Da Christus von der Seligkeit

Here is my translation of the hymn “Da Christus von der Seligkeit” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from Schöne geistliche Lieder, the sixth and last hymn for Trinity XIII, a short partly narrative hymn focused on Jesus’ interaction with the scribe, and titled: “Of the  Scribe’s Temptation.”

Mel.: Mensch, willt du leben seliglich.
 

WHEN Christ would speak of blessedness,
Which men in Him alone possess,
Then what we there have seen and heard,
Should be believed, work and word.

2 A scribe there was, whose heart was proud,
And leapt up first among the crowd,
Supposing honor to obtain
And the mastery to gain.

3 What must I do (so spake the knave)
That I eternal life may have?
Christ made a nimble, true reply.
Naught they gain who Him would try.

4 He saith to him: Thou tempter flawed!
What saith the Law, the Word of God?
The book is yet untorn indeed;
How then dost thou Scripture read?

5 The scribe replied: Thou shalt accord
All heartfelt love to God the Lord—
Heart, soul, strength, mind unstinting be—
And thy neighbor love as thee.

6 Christ praised this answer from His Word
And saith: Here hath thy tongue not erred,
Yet thou that writing must obey,
If thou wilt have life for aye.

7 Such is God’s Law, and so it stands:
No empty speaking it demands,
But that we perfectly comply—
Which in no man’s pow’r doth lie.

8 The Lord Christ knows this certainly,
And wills that men should hear and see
His Word and works; he that believes
There eternal life receives.

Da Christus von der Seligkeit
allein an Ihm gelegen, redt,
was da gesehn wird und gehort,
zu gläuben sein Werk und Wort.

2 Ein Schriftgelehrter sich was dünkt
für andern aus dem Haufen springt,
vermeint groß Ehr zu legen ein,
und Obermeister zu sein.

3 Was mus ich thun, laut seine Frag,
das ich das ewig Leben hab?
Christus begegnet ihm geschwind.
Wer ihn versucht, nichts gewinnt.

4 Er spricht zu ihm: Versuchter schlecht,
wie laut Gottes geschrieben Recht?
Das Buch noch unzerrissen ist,
was merkst du draus, wenn dus liest?

5 Der Schriftgelehrte spricht: Du sollt
Gott deinem Herrn durchaus sein hold,
dein Seel, dein Kraft, dein ganz Gemüth,
dein Nächsten gleich wie dich lieb.

6 Christus lobt solch Antwort der Schrift,
und spricht: Dein Zung die Wort wohl trifft,
aber sie wolln auch sein gethan,
willt du das Leben drinn han.

7 Also stehts um Gottes Gesetz,
es will nicht sein nur ein Geschwätz,
sondern ein vollkömmliche That,
dergleichen kein Mensch vermag.

8 Das weiß der Herr Christus sehr wohl,
will, daß man sehn und hören soll,
sein Werk und Wort, wer daran gläubt,
der lebet in Ewigkeit.
