Meine Seele Gott erhebt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Meine Seele Gott erhebt” (C. Keimann, d. 1662), a paraphrase of the Magnificat from Luke 1, for which Andreas Hammerschmidt provided a well-known setting. Another was made by Vopelius. The meter, trochaic 77.77, is that of “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland,” among other familiar melodies.

Mel.: Meine Seele Gott erhebt.

NOW my soul my God adores,
And in joy in spirit soars,
Who doth help and blessing bring,
Makes my senses joyful spring.

2 On His poor and lowly maid
He a fav’ring eye hath laid;
Age to age men’s progeny
Shall as blessed honor me.

3 He to me great things hath done—
Over all the mighty One!
Ever holy is His name,
For eternity the same.

4 Ever shall His mercy be
On His saints, who faithfully
Fear His name and give Him praise,
Walking in His holy ways.

5 He hath shown His mighty arm,
To our enemies’ great harm,
Scattered with a scornful laugh
All the proud of heart like chaff.

6 Those who swagger in their crown
From their throne He casteth down,
Lifting with a mighty hand
Lowly ones throughout the land.

7 Those whom care and hunger press
He with quickening doth bless,
Empty sends the rich away,
Hungry to and fro to stray.

8 He recalls the oath He swore,
And the mercy pledged before
To His servant Israel,
Saveth body_and soul from hell.

9 As He to our fathers spake,
And did oft clear promise make
Unto Abraham of old,
And his seed—His Word doth hold.

10 Praise and glory ever be,
Father, for Thy mercy free,
Which no measure doth confine:
Praise and glory e’er be Thine!

GERMAN

Meine Seele Gott erhebt,
und mein Geist in Freuden schwebt,
der mir Hei und Segen bringt,
meine Sinn zu Freuden zwingt.

2 Denn ihm hat sein arme Magd
gnädig anzusehn behagt,
daß hinführo Kindeskind
mich zu preisen Ursach findt.

3 Er hat große Ding an mir
ausgeübet, dessen Zier,
Macht und Namens Heiligkeit
ist und bleibt ohn Ziel und Zeit.

4 Dessen Güte für und für
waltet über denen hier,
die in seiner Furchte stehn,
und in seinen Wegen gehn.

5 Dessen starken Arms Gewalt
übt ohn allen Aufenthalt
und zerstreut, wie Spreu der Wind,
die so stolzes Herzens sind.

6 Die sich brüsten in der Kron,
stürzet er von ihrem Thron,
und erhebt mit starker Hand,
die geringen durch das Land.

7 Die so Sorg und Hunger drückt,
er mit Gütern satt erquickt,
und die Reichen läßt er leer
gehn, und hungrig, hin und her.

8 Er denkt an den theuren Eid,
und versprochne Gütigkeit:
Seinem Diener Israel
hilft er auf an Leib und Seel.

9 Als er unserer Väter Schar
hat geredet oft und klar,
Abraham und seinem Kind,
und die ihm geboren sind.

10 Lob und Preis sei jederzeit,
Vater, deiner Gütigkeit,
die von keiner Maße weiß,
dir sei ewig Lob und Preis.

Heut verneut die Christenheit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Heut verneut die Christenheit” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Advent I.

Mel.: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.

ON this day the church anew
Doth her yearly round pursue,
And the fount whence all is poured
Is the advent of our Lord.

2 Now to Zion rideth He,
That her heart may joyful be.
Glad is Salem, peace’s home,
Since her King to her doth come.

3 Just and righteous comes that King,
Who doth save from Satan’s sting,
Comes in form of mortal poor,
His creation to restore.

4 In this advent cause is had
Why we Christians may be glad
And with many a joyful chord
Find delight in Christ the Lord.

5 Where He cometh not, oh, there
Dwells no gladness, but despair!
Yea, there may not in the least
Be a holy day and feast.

6 There is naught but heresy
’Neath the devil’s tyranny,
Sin and shame, disease and woe,
And eternal death below.

7 From these ills hath Christ our Lord
By His advent all restored,
And new feasts of gladness brought,
To recount His mercies wrought.

8 Sing Hosanna, blessed be
He that cometh graciously
In the Lord’s name unto us!
Ever may we praise Him thus!

9 Praise the Father, Christendom,
Who His Son hath caused to come,
As the Spirit’s words attest,
In like glory ever blest! Amen.

GERMAN

Heut verneut die Christenheit
ihre jahrfestliche zeit,
welcher aller Anfang ist,
die Zukunft des Herren Christ.

2 Da er zu Zion einreit,
davon sie sollt haben Freud,
und jauchzen Jerusalem,
weil ihr König zu ihr käm,

3 Ein König, der gerecht ist,
und heilet der Schlangen Biß,
in armer Menschen Gestalt,
daß er sein Geschöpf erhalt.

4 Diese Zukunft macht allein,
daß wir Christen fröhlich sein,
und begehn manch Freuden fest,
allein in dem Herren Christ.

5 Wo derselb nicht kömmet hin,
da kann keine Freude sein,
ja kein recht heiliger Tag,
oder FEst je werden mag.

6 Sondern eitel Ketzerei
in des Satans Tyrannei,
Sünd und Schand, Krankheit und Noth,
Herzenleid, ewiger Tod.

7 Darvon hat uns Jesus Christ,
durch sein zukunft all erlöst.
und manch Freudenfest gemacht,
da man sein Wohlthat betracht.

8 Hosianna drum man singt,
gelobet sei der da kömmt
im Namen des Herrn zu uns,
es währt ewiglich sein Gunst.

9 Ehr sei Gott dem Vater drum,
von ihm sein Sohn zu uns kömmt,
wies der heilig Geist bezeigt,
gleich gepreist in Ewigkeit. Amen.

O Corinth, du Zier der Welt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “O Corinth, du Zier der Welt” (M. Opitz von Boberfelt, 1639), from the author’s Die Psalmen Davids und Episteln, &c., for Trinity IX, the Epistle from 1 Corinthians 10. The melody appointed is that of Geneva 136, since Opitz’s project, dedicated to the dukes of Liegnitz, included a new translation of the Genevan Psalter from 1637 to which were added paraphrases of the Epistles of the Church Year to the same melodies. The meter also fits the Lutheran melody: “Nu komm, der Heiden Heiland.”

Mel.: Old 136 / Célébrez Dieu hautement
Or:
Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.

C
ORINTH, earth’s adornment bright!
How canst thou take such delight
In a false and fond desire,
And the flesh’s wretched fire?

2 Look well, Corinth, what thou dost,
Shun the wickedness of lust,
Put thy idol gods away,
By which ye from heaven stray.

3 Follow not the ancient race
Which to God was pure disgrace,
And but ate and drank and played,
And from their Creator strayed.

4 From unchastity be free,
Since by that impurity
Three and twenty thousand men
Fell in one day on the plain.

5 Tempt not God, but of Him learn,
Who doth speak a judgment stern!
When such Isr’el’s race employed,
They by serpents were destroyed

6 If ye suffer some distress,
Murmur not at God, but bless;
For that like misdeed He hath
Punished righteously by death.

7 All these things note carefully,
Let them admonitions be:
He who stands, let him be sure
That he may no fall endure.

8 God, who knows all that is true,
Knows well how to tempt you too;
He will give men no more share
Than they able are to bear.

GERMAN

O Corinth, du Zier der Welt,
wie das dir so sehr gefällt
einer falschen Liebegunst
und des schnöden Fleisches Brunst?

Schaue wohl zu, was du thust:
Meide des Gelustens Lust,
stelle deine Götter ein,
die zu wenig göttlich sein.

3 Folge nicht der alten Schar,
die für Gott ein Greuel war,
und nur spielte: Trank und aß,
daß sie ihrer selbst vergaß.

4 Seid von Unzucht los und frei,
weil durch jener Hurerei
drei und zwanzig tausend Mann
einen Tag fiel auf den Plan.

5 Auch versucht den Herren nicht,
der ein strenges Urtheil spricht:
als es dies Volk so gemacht,
wards von Schlangen umgebracht.

6 Leidet ihr auch irgend Noth,
murret drum nicht wider Gott,
dann er jener gleiche That
durch den Tod gestrafet hat.

7 Dieses nehmet fleißig ein,
laß es eure Warnung sein:
Welcher stehet sehe zu,
daß er keinen Fall nicht thu.

8 Gott, der weiß es allzuwohl,
wie er euch versuchen soll,
er thut keinem nicht mehr an,
als was er ertragen kann.

Jesus Christus hat vollbracht

My next new hymn translation from Lochner’s Passion-book was “Jesus Christus hat vollbracht” (Anon. / P. F. Hiller, d. 1769, alt.), of which stanzas 1, 6, 2–3 are quoted in a revised form for Devotion 56 (“Christ, Dying, Proclaims His Victory — Sixth Word”). These are the numbers corresponding to the stanzas in the original form. Lochner, however, quotes the revised form as found in the Gesangbuch zum gottesd. Gebrauche in den Stadtkirchen zu Leipzig (Leipzig: Georgenhaus, 1844), later reproduced in various sources. This moves the old stanza 6 to number 2, combines the ideas of old stanzas 2 and 3, and lightly revises the whole text generally. The reviser is not named, but if it arises from the 1844 Leizpig hymnal, it may have been one of the members of the committee consisting of Archd. Goldhorn at St. Thomas, Archd. Bauer at St. Nicolai, Vespers preacher Wolf at St. Petri, under presidency of Supt. Tzschirner, specially formed to replace (and in effect undo) the more Rationalistic hymnal of 1796 (source: H. Hofmann, Zur Geschichte der Leipziger Gesangbücher, p. 19f.).

Mel.: Gott sei Dank durch alle Welt

J
ESUS Christ hath finished quite
What saves sinners from our plight;
  This word from His mouth makes known
  What bequest He makes our own.

2 Lo, He spoke this word for thee,
Spoke it for all men and me:
  All, yes, all is finished quite
  That saves sinners from our plight!

3 All He did for which we yearned,
All atoned, all for us earned;
  All that God of us demands
  Now forever certain stands.

4 All our sins and death as well,
All that threatens us with hell,
  All that can cause us dismay—
  Blotted out and done away!

5 To the Father we may go,
In the Son may stand also;
  Christ, who bids us boldly pray
  Sends the Spirit for our stay.

6 Therefore I may courage take:
Lord, Thou diedst for my sake
  On the cross, to finish quite
  What saves sinners from our plight.

7 What Thou giv’st is also mine,
What I have let all be Thine!
  Now the Father I shall see
  Dearest Lord, alone by Thee.

8 When at last I reach the goal,
With this comfort flies my soul:
  Christ hath finsihed all for me,
  His the might and majesty!

GERMAN (REVISION 1844)
Jesus Christus hat vollbracht,
was uns Sünder selig macht.
Dieses Wort aus seinem Mund
Thut uns sein Vermächtnis kund. (1)

2 Sieh, er sprach dies Wort für dich;
sprachs für alle, sprachs für mich:
Alles, alles ist vollbracht,
was die Sünder selig macht! (6)

3 Alles, was die Seel erschreckt,
liegt nun kraftlos hingestreckt;
alles, was das Herz erfreut,
steht nun fest in Ewigkeit. (2–3)

4 Alle Schrift ist nun erfüllt,
Gottes ewger Rath enthüllt;
alle Gnade waltet hier,
allen Frieden haben wir. (4)

5 Zu dem Vater darf man gehn,
in dem Sohne darf man stehn;
Christus, der uns beten heißt,
sendet uns des Vaters Geist. (5)

6 Nun so fass ich frohen Muth;
Herr, du hast auch mir zugut
dort am Kreuzesstamm vollbracht,
was mich Sünder selig macht. (7)

7 Was du schenkest, ist auch mein;
was ich habe, sei nun dein!
Zu dem Vater komme ich,
mein Erlöser, nur durch dich. (8)

8 Wenn ich einst am Ziele bin,
scheid ich mit dem Troste hin:
Jesus hat für mich vollbracht!
Ihm sei Herrlichkeit und Macht! (9)

GERMAN (ORIGINAL FORM)
Jesus Christus hat vollbracht,
was uns Sünder selig macht,
und weil nun sein Tod geschehn,
muß sein Testament bestehn.

2 Alles hat er ausgesühnt,
alles hat er uns verdient;
alles, was uns Gott verhieß,
ist auf ewighin gewiß.

3 Alle Sünde, aller Tod,
alles, was die Hölle droht,
alles, was uns schrecken kann,
ist zunicht und abgethan.

4 Alle Schriften sind erfüllt,
aller Zorn ist ganz gestillt,
alle Gnade waltet hier,
allen Frieden haben wir.

5 Zu dem Vater darf man gehn,
in dem Sohne darf man flehn;
und der Geist versiegelt schon
unser Erbtheil mit dem Sohn.

6 Sprach dies unsers Mittlers Mund,
so hat unser Glaube Grund,
so hat unsre Hoffnung Ruhm:
Wir sind Christi Eigenthum.

7 Hie grieft meine Seele zu;
du vollkommner Heiland, du
hast auch mir zugut vollbracht,
was mich Sünder selig macht.

8 Was du schenkest, ist auch mein;
was ich habe, sei nun dein.
Zu dem Vater komme ich
anders nicht als nur durch dich.

9 Wenn mein Herz in Zügen liegt,
mach mich durch dies Wort vergnügt:
Jesus Christus hats vollbracht;
ihm sei Herrlichkeit und Macht!

Nun sei willkomm Jesu Christ

 Canticle LXXVI. The Song of the People at Christ’s Entry to Jerusalem, Matt. 21; Mark 11; Luke 19; John 12.

Mel.: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.

JESUS Christ, be welcome now!
David’s very Heir art Thou.
All success we wish to Thee,
And await Thee longingly.

2 Blest be He that cometh down,
Claiming David’s throne and crown,
True Archshepherd of our soul,
King who makes His Isr’el whole!

3 Blest be that fair kingdom too
Of our father David true,
Which comes in the Lord’s great name,
Whom we ever high acclaim!

4 Unto Him sing out and cry
Loud Hosannas e’er on high,
Peace in heav’n eternally,
And on high let glory be!

Text: C. Spangenberg, 1582.

GERMAN
Nun sei willkomm Jesu Christ,
Davids rechter Erb du bist,
Glück und Heil wir wünschen dir,
und warten dein mit Begier.

2 Gelobet sei der da kümmt
und das Reich Davids einnimmt,
der recht Erzhirt unser Seel
ein König von Israel.

3 Gelobet sei auch zugleich
Davids unsers Vaters Reich,
welchs kommt im Namen des Herrn,
den wir stets loben und ehrn.

4 Dem soll auch gesungen sein
das Hosianna so fein,
nun sei stets im Himmel Fried
und Ehr in der Höh hiemit.

Die Himmel, Herr, preisen sehr

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Die Himmel, Herr, preisen sehr” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XIX, Caeli enarrant, with melody assignment “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland,” fitting it for use in Advent, especially with the two stanzas (4 and 5) borrowed from Luther’s hymn, the source of the melody. For stanza 4 I suggest my own translation hewing closer to the psalm, or Massie’s rendering as found in ELHB 1893, but for stanza 5, simply Massie’s text unaltered (later revisions seen, e.g., in TLH 1941, forsake the German sense).

Vierling (Biblia 718) writes on Psalm XIX, “It is a prophecy of the Gospel telling how it would go out into all the world as far as the heavens, and be purveyed day and night, and not only in the Jewish tongue, but in all tongues (v. 4). Just as the sun (which it introduces as a simile, v. 5) shines in every place and gives warmth all around, so shall the new law of the Gospel shine and enlighten, comfort, purify, etc., everything in all manner of teaching. And with this it takes away the old law, which was not so pure, bright, pleasant, and incomparable, etc. The Psalm pertains to the Third Commandment, for it proclaims the true sabbath in which God’s Word is to be taught and believed.”

L
OUDLY, Lord, the heav’ns acclaim
Thy celestial pow’r and name;
And the firmament the grace
Of Thy working doth express.

2 Day to day doth speak the word,
Through the night the news is heard,
To all tongues the tidings known,
Through all lands their line is gone.

3 Fair the sun ascends the earth,
Bringing all men joy and mirth:
Lo, the Father’s only Son
Cometh forth out of His throne!

*4 From the royal, spotless room [Now He leaves His royal room
Of His chamber comes the Groom, [In the holy virgin's womb,
God and Man with joy and grace [God by nature, man by birth,
As a Champion runs His race. [He now runs His course on earth.

*5 From the Father forth He came,
And returned unto the same,
Down to hell He went alone,
And again to God’s high throne.

6 Lord, Thy Word’s a flawless whole,
Comforting the troubled soul;
Sure Thy testimony sings,
Making wise all simple things.

7 Right, O Lord, Thy statutes are,
Gladd’ning hearts both near and far,
Lighting eyes with blessedness!
Fear of God shall never cease.

8 True Thy judgments are, and right,
Blameless, righteous, full of light,
More to be desired than gold,
Sweetness more than honey hold.

9 Well Thy Word instructs us, Lord,
And repays a great reward,
If as faithful servants we
In Thy fear walk faithfully.

10 Since no man, Lord, can begin
To account for all his sin,
We beseech Thee: Grace bestow,
Cover what we do not know. [or, Cleanse the faults…]

11 From all pride Thy servant keep,
Lest I to my peril leap,
Living life against Thy Word,
Suff’ring sin to be my lord.

12 Then my heart alone by grace
Shall of stain show not a trace;
By Thy grace I safe shall be,
Without all iniquity.

13 What my mouth, Lord, Thee implores,
And the sigh my heart outpours
Grant according to Thy Word,
Great Redeemer, mighty Lord!

Die Himmel, Herr, preiſen sehr
Dein göttliche Macht und Ehr,
Auch die Feſte rühmt die Gnad,
Die dein Hand gewircket hat

Durch die Nacht wirds kundgethan,
Allen Sprachen wirds bekant,

Kommt herfür aus ſeinem Thron.

Dem königlichen Saal ſo rein,
Gott von Art und Menſch ein Held,
Sein Weg er zu lauffen eilt.

5  Sein Lauff kömpt vom Vater her,

Fehrt hinunter zu der Hell,
Und wieder zu Gottes Stuel.

Giebt Freud der betrübten Seel,

So wir nun als treue Knecht,

Gieb mirs ja nach deinem Wort,

Jesu, meiner Seelen Ruh

Here is my translation of the Jesus hymn, “Jesu, meiner Seelen Ruh (Anon., asc. Lucas Backmeister), in ELGB #, first published, evidently, in Olearius’s Singe-Kunst (1671) anonymously in 12 stanzas. Fischer says that Grischow-Kirchner’s Nachricht (Halle, 1771) ascribes it to Lucas Backmeister under appeal to “Georg. Schedii Parentat” (Rostock, 1638), but leaves it uncertain whether the father (d. 1608) or son (d. 1638) is meant. Wetzel does not mention it among Backmeister’s hymns, but those he does mention are not his either! Not seldom, hymns from the Lüneburger Drucken (Lunenburg Press) were marked in hymnals as “L. B.,” which was often mistakenly interpreted as Lucas Backmeister, such as Rist’s “Glück zu der frommen Heiden Schaar” and “O Tod wo ist dein Stachel nun,” etc. The appointed melody is “Jesu, komm du selbst zu mir,” or in same books, “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.”

JESUS, Thou my perfect Rest,
Thou above all treasures best,
Thou alone art all to me,
And forever all shalt be.

2 Though the world may higher hold
Precious treasures, wealth, and gold,
Jesus and His priceless blood
Please me more than every good.

3 Though my enemies arise
Threat’ning me before mine eyes,
Jesus saves from all my foes,
Devil, hell, and death o’erthrows.

4 Am I sick, and for my grief
No man can provide relief?
He, the Healer, in my pain
Doth my faithful Help remain.

5 Am I naked, poor, and bare,
Little have to call my share?
Jesus in due time is found,
And my need doth turn around.

6 Must I into exile go
And my homeland no more know?
Jesus for my need attends,
Wondrously my soul defends.

7 Must I scorn and mock’ry bear
Which against God’s statutes are?
Jesus aids and strengthens me
To defy all mockery.

8 Honey, sugar may impart
Certain vigor to the heart,
Yet than these more sweet I hold
Jesus Christ a thousandfold.

9 Therefore, Jesus, Thee I’ll love
Evermore all things above;
Thou, O Jesus—Thou shalt be
All and everything to me:

10 Jesus what the ear doth heed,
Jesus what the eye doth read,
Jesus what the tongue doth taste
And is by the arm embraced.

11 Jesus, be my food and drink,
Jesus, all that I may think,
Jesus, all my hymn of praise,
Jesus, all for all my days!

12 At the last, my highest Good,
Jesus, let Thy precious blood,
Wounds, and agony and pain
In my death my rest remain!

GERMAN
1 Jesu, meiner Seelen Ruh,
und mein bester Schatz dazu,
Alles bist Du mir allein,
sollt auch ferner Alles sein.

2 Liebet jemand in der Welt
edle Schätze, Gold und Geld,
Jesus und sein theures Blut
ist mir mehr dann alles Gut.

3 Stellen meiner Feinde sich
öffentlich gleich wider mich,
Jesus reißt aus aller Noth,
tilget Teufel, Höll und Tod.

4 Bin ich krank, und ist kein Mann,
der die Schmerzen linder kann,
Jesus soll mein Arzt in Pein,
und mein treuer Helfer sein.

5 Bin ich nackend, arm und bloß,
und mein Vorrath ist nich groß,
Jesus hilft zur rechten Zeit
meiner armen Dürftigkeit.

6 Muß ich in das Elend fort
hin an einen fremden Ort,
Jesus sorget selbst für mich,
schützet mich ganz wunderlich.

7 Muß ich dulden Hohn und Spott
wider Gott und sein Gebot;
Jesus giebt mir Kraft und Macht
daß ich allen Spott nicht acht'.

8 Hat der Bienen Honig Saft
und der Zucker süsse Kraft;
mein herzliebster Jesus Christ
tausendmal noch süsser ist.

9 Drum, o Jesu, will ich Dich
immer lieben festiglich;
Du, Du Jesu, sollt allein
meiner Seelen Alles sein.

10 Jesus, was durch Ohren bricht,
Jesus was das Auge sicht,
Jesus was die Zunge schmeckt,
und wornach die Hand sich streckt.

11 Jesus, sei mein' Speis' und Trank,
Jesus sei mein Lobgesang,
Jesus sei mein ganzes All,
Jesus sei mein Freudenschall.

12 Endlich laß Du höchstes Gut,
Jesu laß Dein theures Blut,
Deine Wunden, Deine Pein
meine Rast im Tode sein.

Jesus ist mein Freudenlicht

Here is my translation of the Purification/Presentation hymn, “Jesus ist mein Freudenlicht” (Gottfried Arnold, d. 1714), from ELGB #82, originally appearing in Ein neuer Kern recht geistlicher lieblicher Lieder (Leipzig, 1703). The Buffalo hymnal indicates the melody as either “Jesu komm doch selbst zu mir” or “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.”

JESUS is my gladd’ning Light
When His dawn in me is bright;
Jesus doth my soul restore
When it has its strength no more.

2 Jesus is my Champion strong,
When I face the devil’s throng,
And when sin would seem too great,
He makes all their boast abate.

3 Jesus is my Vict’ry safe
When the foe and Babel chafe;
He’s my mighty Shield and Sword
’Gainst the damned infernal horde.

4 Ah! My Jesus, let me be
Pledged forevermore to Thee.
Let me be to Thee alone
Bound in love, Thy very own.

5 Ye that would your Jesus meet,
Come, enjoy His banquet sweet,
Soul and spirit’s healing rare
Thee for vict’ry to prepare!

6 Jesus, my heart’s Victor be!
Thirsty is my soul for Thee;
Quell my foes forevermore,
Lest I ever lose the war!

7 Take me then with vict’ry decked
To the flock of Thine elect;
There, O Son of God, afford
Of Thy grace the great reward.

8 Rise, ye conqu’ring saints, and see,
Jesus comes forth lovingly,
For your little cross and woe
Crowns of glory to bestow.

9 Alleluia! Gloria!
Rise, the Lord’s Day is not far!
Watch and ready stand alway:
Now draws nigh the quick’ning-day.

Jesus ist mein Freuden-Licht,
wenn Er hell in mir anbricht,
meiner Seelen Ruhe-Statt,
wenn sie kein Kraft mehr hat.

2 Jesus ist mein starker Held,
wenn der Teufel mich anfällt,
und die Sünde groß sich macht,
ich ihr Trotzen ganz veracht.

3 Jesus ist mein fester Sieg,
wider Teufels Babels-Krieg; [wider Satans List und…]
Er ist meine starke Wehr,
wider das verdammte Heer.

4 Ach! mein Jesu, laß mich Dir
sein verpfändet für und für,
laß mich Armen Dir allein
in der Lieb ergeben sein.

5 Alle die ihr Jesum sucht,
kommt, genießet seine Frucht,
die den Geist und Seel' erquickt,
euch damit zum Siegen schickt.

6 Herzens-Jesu, Siegesfürst!
meine Seele nach Dir dürst;
alle Feind in mir besieg,
das ich nicht im Kampf erlieg.

7 Nach dem Siegen nimm mich auf
zu dem auserwählten Hauf,
da Du mir den Gnaden-Lohn
geben wirst o Gottes Sohn.

8 Auf ihr Überwinder! seht,
Jesus euch entgegen geht,
um für wenig Schmach und Hohn,
euch zu geb'n die Ehren-Cron.

9 Hallelujah! Gloria!
Auf, des Herren Tag ist nah,
wachet, haltet euch bereit,
jetzt kommt die Erquickungs-Zeit.

Sieh wie lieblich und wie fein (suppl.)

Here is my supplemental translation of the hymn “Sieh wie lieblich und wie fein” (Michael Müller, d. 1704 / Johann Christian Nehring, d. 1736), a hymn on brotherly love appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gsb #484 in 12 stanzas, of which 4 stanzas are already translated by Frances Cox and found (in a much-altered form of the hymn from Bunsen’s hymnal, which also adds new stanzas) in Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary (1913) #397 for Trinity II. The present text goes further back to a less-abbreviated 12-stanza form popular in Moravian hymnals such as that of Zinzendorf (omitting sts. 2–3), ultimately derived from the 14-stanza Müller-Nehring hybrid from Freylinghausen 1704, the first four stanzas from Müller’s paraphrase of Psalm 133 in his Die Psalmen Davids . . .(Stuttgart, 1700); the remaining stanzas by Nehring, expanding on brotherly love, from a “Manuscript of spiritual poems,” as Wetzel attests. The appointed melody is “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.”

GOOD and pleasant 'tis to see
Brethren dwell in unity,
When the law which Jesus taught,
Rules each word, and deed, and thought.

2 Like rich balm this love flows down,
Spilling from the head and crown,
Till its pow’r and grace revered
Fills the whole of Aaron’s beard.

3 Down upon His garment flows
Balm that joy and bliss bestows,
As the dew on Hermon white
And on Zion’s sacred height.

4 God has promised, as we know,
This rich blessing to bestow,
Life on earth, with all its store,
Life in heav’n for evermore.

5 Oh, how is that love grown cold,
Not a spark may man behold,
On the earth, nor flame detect,
Such as may the heart affect.

6 Every man lives selfishly
With no sense of charity,
With no thought but for his own;
Whither is love’s duty gone?

7 O Lord Christ, the Father’s Son!
Look at last from heaven’s throne,
And the scattered flock attend,
Which no man has pow’r to mend.

8 Heav’nly Shepherd! to Thy way
Bring back all that go astray;
’Neath Thy favor and Thy light,
All Thy pasture-sheep unite.

9 Let Thy mighty unction spill,
Hearts of men with life to fill,
Pour it deep within our heart,
There Thy gladd’ning ray impart.

10 Bind together heart with heart,
Let no strife the union part;
With thine own Almighty hand
Knit the sacred brother-band.

11 Father, Son, and Spirit, we
Own one God in Persons Three;
Who His flock as one doth bind,
In His perfect love combined.

12 Oh, what joy and what delight
Can we lack in yonder light?
All that we desire in heav’n
To that host by God is giv’n.

13 All those hurt in former days
As with single mouth of praise
Shall God’s pow’r of love revere
When He makes them one fore’er.

14 Honor, praise, and majesty
To the Highest ever be,
Me He grant us unity,
Who is ever One in Three!

GERMAN

Sieh, wie lieblich und wie fein
ists wenn Brüder friedlich sein,
wenn ihr Thun einträchtig ist,
ohne Falschheit, Trug und List!

[2 Wie der edle Balsam fleußt,
und sich von dem Haupt ergeußt,
weil er von sehr guter Art,
in des Aarons ganzen Bart;

[3 Der herab fleußt in sein Kleid,
und erreget Lust und Freud,
wie befällt der Thau Hermon,
auch die Berge zu Zion.]

4 Diesen ja verheißt der Herr, [Denn daselbst…]
reichen Segen nach Begehr,
und das Leben in der Zeit,
und auch dort in Ewigkeit.

5 Aber ach, wie ist die Lieb
so erloschen, daß kein Trieb
mehr auf Erden wird gespürt,
der des Andern herze rührt!

6 Jedermann lebt für sich hin
in der Welt nach seinem Sinn,
denkt an keinen andern nicht,
wo bleibt da die Liebespflicht.

7 O Herr Jesu, Gottes Sohn,
schaue doch von deinem Thron,
schaue die Zerstreuung an,
die kein Mensche bessern kann!

8 Sammle, großer Menschenhirt,
Alles, was sich hat verirrt:
laß in deinem Gnadenschein
Alles ganz vereinigt sein.

9 Gieß den Balsam deiner Kraft,
der dem Herzen Leben schaft,
tief in unser Herz hinein,
strahl in uns den Freudenschein.

10 Bind zusammen Herz und Herz,
laß uns trennen keinen Schmerz,
knüpfe selbst durch deine Hand
das geheilgte Brüderband.

11 So, wie Vater, Sohn und Geist
drei und doch nur Eines heißt,
wird vereingt ganz und gar
deine ganze Liebesschaar.

12 Was für Freude, was für Lust
wird uns da nicht seyn bewußt!
Was sie wünschet und begehrt,
wird von Gott ihr selbst gewährt.

13 Alles, was bisher verwundt,
wird mit Lob aus Einem Mund
preisen Gottes Liebesmacht,
wenn er All's in Eins gebracht.

14 Kraft, Lob, Ehr und Herrlichkeit
sei dem Höchsten allezeit,
der wie er ist drei in Ein,
uns in ihm läßt Eines sein!

Jesu, bittend kommen wir

Here is my translation of the Missions hymn, “Jesu, bittend kommen wir” (Jonathan Friedrich Bahnmeier, d. 1841), one of the newer hymns in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch (#252) from the author who brought us “Spread, O Spread, Thou Mighty Word,” another Missions hymn. While not in Fischer, it first appears in Stier’s hymnal in 1835 with the first word Heiland (“Savior”), perhaps because the appointed melody is “Nun komm der Heiden Heiland.” Shortly thereafter, the present form with Jesu is widespread.

JESUS, we come suppliantly
With Thy people unto Thee;
Hearken to our childlike sigh,
What we ask of Thee, supply!

2 Jesus, here among us stay,
Let us be Thine own for aye.
Give us all Thy Spirit, Lord,
Promised in Thy precious Word.

3 Call thy lifeless Christendom
Out of self-sure sleep to come,
Make Thy glory to expand
Everywhere throughout the land.

4 Make Thy Word today resound
Mightily the world around;
Tell the heathen of the peace
In Thy covenant of grace.

5 To the nations spread Thy gate,
Nightly shades illuminate;
Suffer no deceit nor force
To impede Thy kingdom’s course.

6 Give Thy preachers hearts untame,
Faith and hope and love’s true flame;
Let their tears upon the field
Bear of grace a bounteous yield.

7 Zion, thanks to God declare,
Gladly He fulfills thy pray’r;
Yea, He comes with kingdom fair;
What shall to His joy compare?

GERMAN
Jesu, bittend kommen wir
mit den Deinen jetzt zu dir;
hör auf unser kindlich Flehn,
was wir bitten, laß geschehn!

2 Jesu, ziehe bei uns ein,
laß uns ganz dein eigen sein;
schenk uns allen deinen Geist,
den dein theures Wort verheißt.

3 Weck die todte Christenheit
aus dem Schlaf der Sicherheit;
mache deinen Ruhm bekannt
überall im ganzen land.

4 Laß dein Wort zu dieser Zeit
kräftig schallen weit und breit!
Allen Heiden werde kund
deiner Gnade Friedensbund.

5 Thu der Völker Thüren auf;
deines Himmelreiches Lauf
hemme keine List noch Macht;
schaffe Licht in dunkler Nacht.

6 Gieb den Boten Kraft und Muth,
Glaubenshoffnung, Liebesgluth;
laß viel Früchte deiner Gnad
folgen ihrer Thränensaat!

7 Zion, danke deinem Herrn,
was du bittest, tut er gern;
ja, er kommt mit seinem Reich;
was ist seinen Freuden gleich?
