My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Passion-book was “Unter Jesu Kreuze stehn” (P. F. Hiller, 1767), of which stanzas 1–2 and 9 conclude Devotion 60 (“The Kinsmen and Friends of Jesus at the Cross”). I here present the whole text from the author’s Geistliches Liederkästlein, where it is found for October 22 “There stood at the cross of Jesus Mary His Mother and the disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 19:26) and the devotional thought: “Then it was painful, after the ascension no longer so; this gives us joy.” There the melody assigned is “Gott sei Dank in aller Welt.

STANDING under Jesus’ cross,

My next new hymn translation from Lochner’s Passion-book was “Jesus Christus hat vollbracht” (Anon. / P. F. Hiller, d. 1769, alt.), of which stanzas 1, 6, 2–3 are quoted in a revised form for Devotion 56 (“Christ, Dying, Proclaims His Victory — Sixth Word”). These are the numbers corresponding to the stanzas in the original form. Lochner, however, quotes the revised form as found in the Gesangbuch zum gottesd. Gebrauche in den Stadtkirchen zu Leipzig (Leipzig: Georgenhaus, 1844), later reproduced in various sources. This moves the old stanza 6 to number 2, combines the ideas of old stanzas 2 and 3, and lightly revises the whole text generally. The reviser is not named, but if it arises from the 1844 Leizpig hymnal, it may have been one of the members of the committee consisting of Archd. Goldhorn at St. Thomas, Archd. Bauer at St. Nicolai, Vespers preacher Wolf at St. Petri, under presidency of Supt. Tzschirner, specially formed to replace (and in effect undo) the more Rationalistic hymnal of 1796 (source: H. Hofmann, Zur Geschichte der Leipziger Gesangbücher, p. 19f.).
