Here is my translation of the hymn, “Als Jesus durch Samariam” (J. Heermann, 1653), from the author’s Evangelia…, for Trinity XIV, a paraphrase of the Gospel from Luke 17.
Mel.: Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.
AS Jesus through Samaria’s coast
And Galilee was going—
Who could of David’s kinship boast,
Was crowned with praises glowing.
And coming to a market street,
Did standing there ten lepers meet,
Who from afar to Jesus cried:
“Thou, Lord, abide!
O Jesus, Thou canst peace provide!”
2 “We must of mortal help despair,
By leprosy assailèd!
Thou art a Master high and rare,
Thy skill hath never failèd.
Have mercy, for our pain is great,
And Thy heart is compassionate,
So let it move Thy mercy true,
Which, daily new,
Will no disease with loathing view!”
3 Christ tells them: “Very well, but go
Unto the priests to show you.
The Law’s prescription well ye know,
Let naught restrain or slow you,
But hasten to the priests, that they
May see what happened on this day.”
And so they went obediently
And wondrously
Were cleansed at once from leprosy.
4 When one of them upon the road
Saw that he had been healèd,
He, turning back and praising God,
His gratitude revealèd.
This man was a Samaritan
Who thus intoned his sweet paean,
And at Christ’s feet fell on his face,
Nor of his grace
Himself thought worthy to embrace.
5 To him Christ saith: Where are they gone—
The other nine remaining?
Dost thou, young stranger, come alone
To Me with love unfeigning?
Thou giv’st to God what is His due,
The Jews have been deceived anew.
Arise, and go thy way and be
True unto Me,
For lo, thy faith hath savèd thee.

GERMAN
Als Jesus durch Samariam
und Galiläm reiset,
wird er, der Held aus Davids Stamm
erkannt und hochgepreiset.
Da er in einem Markt will gehn,
bald find er zehen Kranke stehn,
die schreien ihm von ferne zu:
Du, eben du,
Herr Jesu, kannst uns schaffen Ruh.
2 Hier ist der Menschen Hülf umsonst,
weil uns der Aussatz quälet.
Du bist ein Meister; deine Kunst
hat dir noch nie gefehlet.
Erbarm dich unser! Unser Schmerz
is groß. Mitleidend ist dein Herz,
drum laß dichs jammern, deine Treu
ist täglich neu;
sie trägt für keiner Krankheit scheu.
3 Wohlan, sagt Christus, gehet hin,
den Priestern euch zu zeigen.
Ihr wisset des Gesetzes Sinn.
Ihr dürft das nicht verschweigen.
Geht hin, und laß die Priester sehn
diees, was an euch jetzt wird geschehn.
Sie gehen fort, und das sie fein
gehorsam sein,
flug werden sie vom Aussatz rein.
4 Da einer siehet, daß die Noth
ihn ganzlich hat verlassen:
kehrt er zurück, und preiset Gott,
der Undank pflegt zu hassen.
Dies ist ein Samaritisch Mann,
der sein Dankliedlein stimmet an,
er legt sich nieder auf die Erd;
schätzt sich nicht werth,
der Gnade, so ihm wiederfährt.
5 Zu dem spricht Christus: Ach wo sind
die andern Neune blieben?
Kommst du allein, du fremdes Kind,
standhaftig mich zu lieben?
Du giebest Gott, was Gott gebührt.
Die Jüden sind aufs new verführt.
Steh auf, geh hin, und bleibe mir
treu für und für.
Dein Glaube hat geholfen dir.
