Da Christus nach Jerusalem

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Da Christus nach Jerusalem” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XIV, on the Gospel from Luke 17, with title: “Of the Lord’s circuit on the journey to Jerusalem.”

Mel.: Wohl dem, der in Gottes Furcht steht.

AS Christ the Lord with high intent

At last to Salem’s city went,

All debts to pay in sinners’ place,

To win for us the Father’s grace:

2 No route direct did He pursue,

His heart had farther things in view

Than any common trav’ler hath,

Who sets out by the swiftest path.

3 Christ willed to make a circuit round

And travel through Samarian ground,

A land and people much despised—

This first of all the Lord devised.

4 Upon the straying, poor, reviled

He looks with love and pity mild,

And would to honor that restore—

Such longing Christ the Savior bore.

5 He also went through Galilee,

Named for a circle, fittingly— 

Yea, through the circle of the world.

The banner of His Word unfurled.

6 Not to one land alone was He

Sent by the Father graciously,

But to the whole wide world this King

His heav’nly kingdom wills to bring.

7 This word is worthy of acclaim:

Christ Jesus into this world came

To save poor sinners, this alone:

This may we all believe and own.

Da Christus nach Jerusalem

vornahm, zum letzten Mal zu gehn,

daß er bezahlet unser Schuld

und uns erwürb des Vaters Huld:

2 Zog er nicht die richtige Straß,

sein Herz gedacht viel weiter aus,

dann Wandersleuten ist zu Sinn,

wenn sie vor sich wo ziehen hin.

3 Weit um gefiels dem Herrn zu gehn,

gleich mitten durch Samarien,

welches Land mit seim Volk veracht,

das hat er Herr erstlich bedacht.

4 Was sehr verirrt ist und verschmäht,

dasselb am sehnlichsten ansieht,

daß ers zurecht und Ehren bring,

darauf geht Jesus Christus um.

5 Auch durch der Galiläer Land,

von seiner Rund also genannt,

ja durch die ganze runder Welt,

sein Wort zu lehren er befiehlt.

6 Er ist auch nicht nur einem Land

aus Lieb von seim Vater gesandt,

sondern der ganzen Welt zugleich,

er bringt allen das Himmelreich.

7 Es ist ein Wort werth, daß mans hält,

Christus ist kommen in die Welt,

nur um der armen Sünder willn,

zur Seligkeit, wirs gläuben solln.
