Wie lieblich sind dein Wohnung, Herr

 Psalm LXXXIV.

A Psalm of the Children of Korah to Precent upon the Githith.

¶ It is a psalm of consolation wherein God’s church and spiritual polity are depicted and God’s Word highly glorified and praised above all things; with indicaiton what sort of benefit, prosperity, and eternal welfare this brings those who have love for it, and cling to it, and we are thus incited gladly to be in want of all good things, honor, power, joy, and delight, that we may but retain God’s Word. For this it is gives victory, blessing, grace, honor, and every good. Therefore it also prays finally for preservation of the preaching office and furthering of the kingdom of Christ.

Ecclesia. Church.

Nichts ist so gut, so nütz und fein,

als ein wahr Glied der Kirchen sein,

wer Gott vertraut, dem ist recht wohl,

den frommen kein Guts mangeln soll.

Naught is so good as to abide

A member of God’s church and bride;

Who trusts in God may gladly sing:

The upright shall lack no good thing.

Mel.: Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.

HOW lovely, Lord, Thy dwellings are,

All beauties far excelling!

My soul is longing from afar,

And fain would there be dwelling,

Yea, for Thy courts, O Lord, I long,

My body_and soul sing joyful song

Of God, the ever living.

2 The sparrow there and swallow find

A nest that shall not falter,

Where they may lay their infant kind—

O Lord, it is Thine altar!

Thine altar, Lord of hosts, I say

My King and God both now and aye—

Thy Christian church most holy!

3 O blest are they who, dwelling there,

Shall ever after praise Thee!

Who live amid Thy temple fair,

And in that heav’nly glory

Acclaim Thee as their strength and might,

And trust not works nor human light,

But rest upon Thee solely.

4 With all their heart they look to Thee

As through this vale of sorrow

They pass in faith, and constantly

Proclaim both eve and morrow

Thy Word, a well of joy divine,

Which is with many blessings fine

Adorned by God the Maker.

5 A war and spiritual campaign

In God the Lord’s name waging,

They always thus the vict’ry gain

And glory o’er foes’ raging;

From which all mortals must confess

That God His house doth keep and bless

Upon His holy mountain.

6 Lord God of hosts, receive my pray’r,

O God of Jacob, hear me!

Thou art our Shield, Lord God, fore’er,

No man to help draws near me;

Therefore this hour look down upon

The kingdom of Thy dearest Son,

By Thine own self anointed.

7 A day within Thy courts excels

A thousand in all others;

Therefore I would above all else

Serve there my Christian brothers

And in Thy house but keep the door,

Than dwell so long, yea, evermore,

In tents of men ungodly!

8 The Lord God is a Sun and Shield,

He teaches and defends us,

His Word doth help and comfort yield,

And of our ills amends us.

He gives them grace and glory great

Who trust in Him, for all the hate

And scorn the world affords them.

9 The upright shall lack no good thing,

God will forsake them never;

Let us in faith then gladly sing

And boldly grasp God’s favor.

Blest is the one who trusts in God!

At last he hath the best abode,

And heaven’s realm inherits.

GERMAN

Wie lieblich sind dein Wohnung, Herr,

wie herrlich und wie schone.

Mein Seel verlangt und sehnt sich sehr,

wollt gar gern darinn wohnen

nach dein Vorhuofen sehn ich mich,

mein Leib und Seele freuen sich

des lebendigen Gottes.

2 Der Vogel hat funden ein Haus,

die Schwalb ihr Nestlein kleine,

da sie ihr Jungen hecken aus.

Herr, dein Latar ich meine;

ja dein Altar, Herr Zebaoth,

mein König und mein lieber Gott,

dein heilig Christlich Kirche.

3 Wohl denen, die in deinem Haus

dich immerdar schon loben.

In deim Tempel gehn ein und aus

und dich im Himmel droben,

halten für ihre Macht und Stärk

und bauen nicht auf eigen Werk

sonder sich dir vertrauen.

4 Von Herzengrund auf dich nur sehn

im Glauben dir nachwandeln,

und durch das Jammerthal hingehn

dein Wort lehren und handeln,

und machen daselbst Brünnlein rein,

solch lehren mit viel Segen fein

von Gott geschmücket werden.

5 Sie führen ein geistlichen Krig

im Namen Gotts des Herren,

erhalten auch stets einen Sieg

beim andern ihm zu ehren,

daraus man dennoch sehen muß,

daß Gott der Herr hält selber Haus

auf seinem heiligen Berge.

6 Erhör mein Bitt, Gott Zebaoth,

Gott Jakob thus vernehmen,

denn usner Schild bist du, Herr Gott,

niemand wird uns beschonen,

so schau doch nun auch jetzt zugelcih,

auf deines lieben Sohnes Reich,

den du hast selbst gesalbet.

7 In dein Vorhöfen ist ein Tag,

viel besser denn sonst tausend.

Daher ich wahrlich sagen maag,

daß ich in deinem Hause,

der Thür viel lieber hüten will,
