Da Sankt Johannes am Jordan

Here is my translation of the hymn “Da Sankt Johannes am Jordan,” also revised as “Da Johannes an dem Jordan” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Advent IV, a paraphrase of the Gospel from John 1. Gesius 1605 supplies us with the additional supplicatory stanza 7 as well as assigns the

WHEN at the Jordan John baptized
And preached, the Jews’ legation
Was sent to ask, Was he the Christ,
Foretold to save their nation?
Then answered Zacharias’ son,
I am not he, nor am I one
To claim a name so glorious.

2 They further asked, Art thou by name
That prophet called Elias?
He said, Not I (yet well could claim
That title great and pious.)
They asked: Art thou another, then?
No, saith he, I am not such men,
Their name doth not befit me.

3 Since thou art not the promised Seed,
And not the prophet holy,
Then tell us who thou art indeed,
And what men ought to call thee:
What dost thou of thine own self say?
That we to them who sent us may
An answer give unerring.

4 I call myself a voice of one
In desert places crying,
As written once by Amoz’ son,
To God’s high call replying:
Prepare ye for the Lord His way,

If thou art not Messias,
Nor art a prophet unto men,

Here is my translation of the hymn “Ob kommen sei, der kommen soll” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Advent III, with title “Hymn of proof and comfort that the promised Messiah is come, Matt. 11.”

THAT He is come whom seers foretell,
Is known to John the Baptist well,
Who knew Him at the Jordan’s flood,
Whose lips and finger owned Him God.

2 But few believed the tidings sent,
Thus for a mightier testament
He sendeth two disciples forth,
Themselves to see and hear His worth.

3 To them, at their great inquiry,
An answer in His deeds they see,
And haste to bring their master dear
The evidence of eye and ear.

4 The lame can walk, the blind can see
The lepers’ limbs from stain are free,
The deaf regain their hearing pow’r,

WHEN holy John in prison learned
His time to die was nearing,
He willed his foll’wers might be turned
And Christ as Master hearing;
Thus bade he two disciples go,
That they might Christ the Savior know
By His great deeds and wonders.

2 Our master bids us ask of Thee,
Art Thou the Savior coming?
Them Jesus answers tenderly:
Those who were lame go roaming,
The blind have sight, the deaf now hear,
The dead are raised from tomb and bier,
And cleansed are many lepers.

3 Say also unto John yet more:
The Gospel sweet is spoken

¶ This hymn of praise has two parts. In the first, he praises God because of His grace and goodness in visiting His people, redeeming them, and raising up a horn of salvation among them; then on account of His faithfulness and truth in keeping what He had spoken and promised and bound and pledged Himself to toward them; finally on account of His almighty power and strength in delivering His people and redeeming them from all enemies. He also recounts why this happened, namely, that He might be served , and shows briefly in what the true worship of God consists

Da Jesus an den Jordan kam

Here is my translation of the Baptism hymn, “Da Jesus an den Jordan kam” (Ludwig Helmbold, d. 1598), in ELGB #291, where it is given without author, dated “ca. 1650.” Fischer has no entry for it. It appears in the Marpurg Gsb 1684, no. 126, p. 245f., in the Baptism section, with melody “Christe der du bist Tag und Licht” indicated. Further search locates it in Helmbold’s Schöne Geistliche Lieder über alle Evangelia, no. XXXI (in the 1615 ed., p. 32f.), “concerning the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ” (on the Day of the Epiphany). Here the Christmas melody “Christum wir sollen loben schon” is appointed. Probably when it was later adopted not as an Epiphany hymn but generally as a Baptism hymn, the seasonal melody was replaced with the more general one (admittedly originally a season melody from Lent).

 

WHEN Jesus came to Jordan’s flood,
By John was baptized for our good,
As if He were with sin defiled;
There heav’n and earth were reconciled.

2 What wonder then occurred, behold:
The heavens were as veils unrolled,
The Spirit came down from above
In gracious form like as a dove.

3 On Christ the Lord did He alight,
A voice from heaven sounded bright:
“This is My Son, beloved and best,
On Him doth all My pleasure rest.”

4 ’Twas for our good, what happened here;
Not for Himself doth God appear,
He speaks, not that He may receive,
But that we may this truth believe:

5 That Man is God’s true Son, the Christ,

Gott Vater uns sein Sohn vorstellt

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Gott Vater uns sein Sohn vorstellt” (Nicolaus Herman, d. 1561; asc. Melchior Bischof, d. 1614), in ELGB #6. Fischer has no entry for it as such. I find it in the present form in Niedling’s Geistliche Wasserquelle (1667) and Johan Hegler’s Seckendorf Gsb 1708, p. 13. Earlier, however, the first stanza appears as the 7th, final stanza of Nicolaus Herman’s hymn for Advent I (with “blood” instead of “Word”), “Da Christus wollt ein Lösegeld” in his Sontag unnd fürnembsten Feste Evangelia (1580). Stanzas 2–4 are the final prayer-stanza from his hymns for Advent II, III, and IV resp.: “Christus uns treulich warnen thut,” “Als Sankt Johann wußt daß er sollt,” “Da Sankt Johannes am Jordan.” Thus by combining the final summarizing stanzas, a useful Advent hymn of general application was created. The appointed melody is “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.”

Here is my translation of “Aeterno gratias Patri” (P. Melanchthon), a hymn for the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist, as found in Lossius’ Psalmodia (1579). Below is his version of the melody followed by an unidentified second version.

NOW UNTO God the Father raise
All churches songs of thanks and praise,
For John, the herald of His Word,
Whom God hath sent and we have heard.

2. He bade men turn from sin and pride,
The haughty spirits terrified
With fearful warning that the Son
Would come to judge the earth anon.

3. He called the broken to believe,
And life and comfort to receive;
The Lamb he showed, alone who would
Appease God’s wrath and shed His blood.

4. These teachings he, with spirit bold
Imparting, thus the Christ foretold,
As if a newer Sun were nigh,
The very Dayspring from on high.

5. No way the Pharisees could find
His spirit strong to break or bind;
Elijah true, he filled his task
The hypocrites thus to unmask.

6. We pray Thee, Father God in heav’n,
Our heart and spirit to sustain
That we by faith may evermore
Believe the witness that John bore.
