Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wer gläubt, liebt, meidet Sündenschuld” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Trinity XX, above which he also mentions the customary hymns “Kommt her zu mir” and “Wie schön leuchtet.”
Mel.: Lobt Gott, ihr Christen, allzugleich.
WHO hears God’s Word, hath faith and love,
And shuns the works of sin,
And prays, and seeks the gate above
By patient faith to win—
2 He is elect through Christ the Lord
From all eternity;
No foe can steal by craft or sword
His blessing heavenly.
3 Praise God! Christ is my Portion made,
My Light and joyful Song,
My Shield and Shelter, Help and Aid,
My Hope and Refuge strong.
4 Praise God for all His mercies true,
The marvels of His grace,
Which He bestows on me anew
Now and for endless days!
