Here is my translation of the hymn, “Petrus beim Herrn ein Frag legt ein” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Trinity XXII, a metrical paraphrase of the Gospel Lesson, Matthew 18:21–35. Gesius 1605 appoints for the melody a previously given for Trinity XV:

Jesus zu seinen Jüngern sprach.

A QUESTION Peter asked the Lord:
“How oft must I with gracious word
Forgive my brother’s sin toward me?
Shall seven times sufficient be?”

2 Then Jesus answered readily:
“Hear, Peter, what I say to thee,
Let him not sev’n times be forgiv’n
But rather seventy times sev’n!”

3 For heaven’s kingdom’s like unto
A certain king, which would review
His servants, and would take account,
That each might pay his due amount.

4 To him a debtor then was showed,
Who full ten thousand talents owed
Which sum he had no means to pay.
Then did his lord command and say:

5 “Sell off his goods, wife, child, and all,
Sell him as well, his life enthrall.”
He said: “Lord, patience have with me,
And I will pay it all to thee.”

6 Then with heartfelt compassion moved,
The lord the servant’s plea approved,
Forgave his debt, and set him free
In utter grace and clemency.

7 But that same servant, thus unbound,
One of his fellow servants found,
Who owed him little, him beset,
And said: “Take thought, and pay thy debt!”

8 He, falling at his feet, did say:
“Have patience till I can repay!”
But he would grant him no reprieve,
But cast him into pris’n to grieve.

9 His fellow servants saw this deed
And came and told their lord with speed.
He, whom that wrong great sorrow gave,
Said hotly: “Hear, thou wicked knave!

10 “I saw thy wretched misery,
Thy whole great debt forgiving thee.
How art thou such a tyrant yet
To him who owed so little debt?

11 “How cold is thy compassion grown,
That thou dost not, as thee was done?
Let him tormentors’ captive be,
Till he pays all that’s due to me!”

12 “So likewise shall (saith God the Son)
My Father do to everyone
Who doth with men impatient live,
Nor will their trespasses forgive.”

Petrus beim Herrn ein Frag legt ein,
Wie oft muß ich dem Bruder mein
sein Sünd vergeben, nenn die Zahl.
Ists nicht genug an sieben mal.

2 Darauf Jesus bald zu ihm sprach,
Hör mein Petre, was ich dir sag,
Sieben ist viel zu kleine Zahl,
vergib seibn mal siebitzig mal.

3 Denn es ist doch das Himmelreich
eim großen Herrn und König gleich,
der mit sein Knechten rechnen wollt,
ein jeder sein Schuld zahlen sollt.

4 Da wurd ein Schuldner für ihn bracht,
des Schuld zehen tausend Pfund macht,
die Summ er nicht bezahlen konnt,
da sprach der Herr zur selben Stund.

5 Sein Hab und gut, sein Kind und Weib
verkaufen, und sein eigen Leib.
Er sprach: Herr, hab mit mir Geduld,
ich will dir zahlen alle Schuld.

6 Da wurd der Herr zur Gütigkeit
bewegt, und zur Barmherzigkeit,
schenkt ihm die Schuld und ließ ihn los.
Aus lauter Gnad und Güte groß.

7 Darnach ging hin der störrisch Mann,
fiel seiner Mitknecht einen an,
der ihm ein wenig schuldig war,
sprach zu ihm: Denk, und zahl mich bar.

8 Der fiel für ihm nieder, und sprach,
hab mit mir Gduld bis ichs vermag,
aber kein Frist woll er ihm lan,
ließ ihn gefänglich nehmen an.

9 Da solchs sahen die Mitknecht sein,
brachten sies für den Herrn hinein,
da verdroß ihn das groß Unrecht,
und sprach zornig, hör du Schalkknecht:

10 Dein Elend hab ich gsehen an,
und dir all deine Schuld erlan,
wie das du so Tyrannishc bist,
gegen dem, der dir schuldig ist.

11 Wie ist die Lieb bei dir so kalt,
daß du nit auch thust gleicher Gstalt,
ihr penniger nehmt ihn nur hin,
bis daß er zahl, halt gfangen ihn.

12 Gleich so wird auch mein Vater thun
eim jeden, saget Gottes Sohn:
Der mit andern nicht hat Geduld,
vergibt ihn nicht ihr Fehl und Schuld.
