Wie herrlich und wie lieblich sei

 Here is my translation of the hymn “Wie herrlich und wie lieblich sei” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, the first hymn for Trinity XX, with title “The Royal Marriage.”

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.

HOW glorious and how pleasant is
The kingdom of the Savior—
To which God bids, and promises
Free entry by His favor—
He by a parable doth show:
The world no better joy can know
Than such a royal marriage.

2 Th’ estate of royalty on earth
Is glorious, grand, and mighty;
While treasures dear and great of worth
Befit not all men rightly,
They yet are in kings’ houses found:
There food and garments rich abound
Prepared with pomp and splendor.

3 Nor can on earth aught lovelier be,
Nor hearts be more delighted,
Than when in marriage hon’rably
Two Christians are united.
For feasts of joy the halls are dressed,
Appointed well for every guest.
A king leaves nothing lacking.

4 So is it too with Christians here:
God is the King almighty,
And with His Son holds naught more dear
Than that His bride we might be
In one true faith, and take our place
As guests, and share in joy and grace
And glory here and yonder.

5 God to that marriage every day
Doth by His servants bid us,
In house and town, in kindliest way,
Of all excuse to rid us:
Come to the marriage, people dear!
All is prepared! Let none from fear
Remain withou, but enter!

Wie herrlich und wie lieblich sei
das Reich des Herren Christi,
dazu uns Gott läßt laden frei,
daß niemanden was koste,
zeigt er selbs durch ein Gleichnis an,
die Welt nichts bessers haben kann,
denn königliche Hochzeit.

2 Der königliche Stand auf Erd
ist hoch, reich, mächtig, herrlich;
was köstlich ist, was theur und werth,
nicht jedermann gebührlich,
das findt man in der König Haus,
an Speis und Kleidern überaus,
mit Pracht und Lust bereitet.

3 Es kann auch nichts lieblichers sein,
noch freundlichers auf Errden,
denn wenn zwei Menschen fromm und fein
ehlich vertrauet werden,
dabei man hält ein Freudenfest,
wohl zugericht für alle Gäst,
ein König läßt nichts mangeln.

4 Also stehts um das Christenthum,
Gott ist ein großer König,
wunscht nichts liebers mit seinem Sohn,
denn daß im Glauben einig,
wir seine Braut und Gäste wärn,
theilhaftig seiner Freud und Ehrn,
hier und in jenem Leben.

5 Darzu thut er uns alle Tag
durch seine Knechte laden,
von Haus zu Haus in unser Stadt
läßt er uns freundlich sagen;
zur Hochzeit kommt, esist bereit
mein Mahlzeit, o ihr lieben Leut,
thut jo nicht außen bleiben.
