Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Trinity XXVII, a hymn on the end of the church year. The text may be inspired by the first line of the last stanza of Rinkart’s hymn.

Mel.: Nun danket alle Gott.

TO God be thanks and praise
Who hath so well supplied us
With blessings through the year,
Whose end doth now betide us!
He by His Holy Word
To heav’nly way hath showed,
And on both body and soul
Hath myriad goods bestowed.

2 To God be thanks and praise
Who hath so well supplied us
And shall this coming year
With blessings still provide us.
For never shall His grace
And faithful goodness fail;
Therefore with joyful hope
The coming year we hail.

3 To God be thanks and praise,
To God the heav’nly Father,
And to the Son, and Him
Co-glorious with each other:
On earth be chanted: “Lord,
Lord, Lord of Hosts,” always!
In heaven evermore
To God be thanks and praise!

Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott
für alle seinen Segen,
durch den wir abermal
ein Jahr zurücke legen.
Er hat uns durch sein Wort
den Himmels Weg gelehrt,
auch sonst für Seel und Leb
viel tausend Guts beschert.

2 Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott
für alle seinen Segen,
denn er auf künftig Jahr
wird wieder auf uns legen.
Denn seine Güte hört
ja nimmermehr nicht auf.
Ei nun, so hoffen wir
im Voraus freudig drauf.

3 Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott,
dem Vater und dem Sohne,
und dem, der Beider gleich
am Wesen und im Throne.
Hier zeitlich singt man dir,
Herr, Herr, Herr Zebaoth;
und dort auch ewiglich:
Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott.
