Seht zu, wie ihr vorsichtig sei

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Seht zu, wie ihr vorsichtig seid” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Trinity XX, a metrical paraphrase of the Epistle lesson, Eph. 5:15–21.

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.
 

SEE that ye circumspect may be
And rightly walk continually,
That ye as wise men may always
Redeem the time, these evil days.

2 In understanding live below,
And what the Lord’s will is, that know;
And be not drunk and filled with wine,
Lest sin invade and undermine.

3 All order else is soon o’erturned,
Where mouths have moderation spurned.
Be rather with the Spirit filled,
And speak the truth, as God hath willed.

4 With psalms and hymns your lips employ,
Sing in the Spirit, full of joy,
With melody, and let your heart
To God unceasing praise impart.

5 To God the Father thanks and praise
For all things give in life always,
In Jesus’ name, the Savior dear.
Submit yourselves, and Him revere.

6 In fear of God be ready e’er
To do your right and fitting share;
Where hearts are ruled by fear of God,
There is life’s way in blessing trod.

Seht zu, wie ihr vorsichtig seid,
und recht zu wandeln stets bereit,
daß ihr euch als die weisen Leut
schickt allzeit in die böse Zeit.

2 Drum seid verständig, merkt dabei,
was doch des Herzens Wille sei,
und saufet euch ja nicht voll Wein,
daß Sünd und Laster schleichen ein.

3 All Ordnung geht sonst bald zu Grund,
wo stets wird überfüllt der Mund,
wollt ihr voll sein, so werdt voll Geist,
und redet, was die Wahrheit weißt.

4 Die Psalmen und der Lobgesang
im Geist der guten Lieder Klang
sei eure höchste Herzensfreud,
singt Gott, lobt ihn zu jeder Zeit.

5 Sagt Gott dem Vater Lob und Dank
für alles euer Leben lang,
preist ihn in Namen Jesu Christ,
seid unterthan, wies billig ist.

6 In Gottesfurcht seid stets bereit,
daß ihr thut eure Schuldigkeit,
wo Gottesfurcht das Herz regiert,
da wird das Leben wohl geführt.
