Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XCVI, Cantate Domino, with title, “A psalm of instruction and prophecy of the kingdom of Christ.” The Dorian melody by Waldis follows the longer Lutheran meter (87.87.87.877), employed, e.g., by Luther in his hymn “Es wöll uns Gott genädig sein” but with rhyme of the last line (ABABCDCDD).

A NEW song sing ye to the Lord,
In all the world adore ye,
Hold not your peace; with one accord
Unto His name give glory,
And glorify His wonders all,
Show forth His great salvation,
How He repairs our sinful fall,
Now make ye proclamation,
To Him turn every nation!

2 The Lord is great and wonderful,
Let Him be ever praisèd!
High o’er all gods the Lord doth rule,
In highest heaven raisèd.
All heathen gods mere idols are;
A fool on them relieth.
God’s like is found not near nor far,
Heav’n He with life supplieth,
He every heart descrieth.

3 Among His church He doth possess
All majesty and glory.
There saints live by His righteousness,
His grace their constant story—
How He hath mightily undone
All sin and devastation,
Through Jesus Christ, His only Son,
Who died for our salvation
And claimed us as His nation.

4 Therefore come ye all nations, come,
To God the glory giving,
His pow’r is shown to Christendom,
Give sacrifices living,
And worship now His holy name,
O worship now before Him
In beauty of His holiness:
He wills that we implore Him,
And for His gifts adore Him!

5 Lo, He hath founded for our good
A kingdom like no other,
When He through suff’ring, cross, and blood
His course took to the Father.
Above all worlds He reigns as King,
His realm must stand forever,
He righteously rules everything.
All those who own Him Savior,
Them shall He cast out never.

6 Let all things therefore joyful be
In heav’n and earth existing,
The sea let roar, the wind blow free,
Imbued with joy persisting,
Before the Lord, who comes to earth
The judge the ostentatious
And humble with His righteous truth,
To damn all lies fallacious,
And to the just be gracious.

Jauchzet mit Freud dem starken Gott

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Jauchzet mit Freud dem starken Gott” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXXXI, Exultate Deo, with title “An instruction that we should call upon God to comfort us with His help, and He will deliver us in time of need.” The Ionian melody by Waldis is designed for this text in the meter 84.77.84.77.88.77.

TO God our strength shout joyfully!
The Lord is He:
So sing His glory meetly,
And let the harp sound sweetly,
Take psalt’ry, timbrel, harp, and string,
With gladness sing,
And let God’s Word be sounding
Before the foes surrounding,
For so He earnestly commands
His praise from all the earthly lands,
His Word bids be held precious:
Fly, world and foe rapacious!

2 As He saved Isr’el in His grace
From death’s distress,
From Egypt’s land He brought them,
His hand deliv’rance wrought them.
As He for us hath also done
Through Christ His Son,
That He might us deliver,
And make the foe to quiver.
Freed from the Law, sin, death, and hell,
God’s wrath, and death’s distress as well,
He hath us vict’ry given,
Peace, joy, and life in heaven.

3 He saith, My people, hear today
The words I say,
And what I would now be teaching,
Your heart turn to My preaching,
See that no other god ye own,
My Law alone
Of Christ my Son, your Savior,
Dwell in your heart forever.
So that My mouth in every place,
My tell the testament of grace,
The message never ceasing
Of grace for man’s transgressing!

4 My people hearken not to Me,
Nor wish to be
By my Word now directed.
They have my truth rejected.
THey follow their own counsel dim
And what to them
Wise and alluring seemeth,
And heed what man’s mind dreameth.
They in their own poor strength confide,
In merit false and human pride,
And by their works would save them,
Thus to their doom I leave them.

5 Yea, if My people hearkened still
Unto My will,
Then would I now attend them,
And from their foes defend them.
And soon subdue for them their foes
Who them oppose,
And as My people’s Savior
Would help and keep them ever,
And feed them with My heav’nly bread,
In sin and anguish, death and dread;
In need would satisfy them,
With grace and good supply them.

¶ Then grant, O Lord, henceforth that we
Unitedly
May heed Thy will and pleasure,
Obey in fullest measure,
And walk in Thy commandments sure,
And faith most pure,
And for Thy favors godly,
Thank, praise, adore, and laud Thee,
In Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord,
And th’ Holy Ghost with one accord,
Who granteth us the blessing,
To trust in needs distressing.

Jauchtzet mit freud dem starcken Gott,

Und laßt Gotts wort erschallen,
Für unsern feinden allen,
Dann solchs hat er mit ernst befoln,
Daß wir ja allzeit loben solln,

Erlößt vom gsetz, sünd, todt und hell,

Kommt her, ihr Christen alle

Here is my translation of the psalm praphrase, “Kommt her, ihr Christen alle” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XCV, Venite exultemus, with title, “A psalm of instruction and prophecy of the kingdom of Christ.” The uncommon meter, 788.788.78.78, is supported by Waldis’s own Ionian melody.

O COME, ye Christians, singing,
Upon the Lord your thanks bestow,
Before His face your gladness show,
Praise Him with voices ringing,
With shouts of joy His praise propound,
With psalms and with the sweet harp-sound.
The Lord of heav’n adore ye:
True God above all gods is He.
All kings shall give Him glory,
There is none like in majesty.

2 All that wherewith earth teemeth,
The mountains high and every land
Was fashioned by His godly hand,
All that in ocean swimmeth,
All produce that hte earth has brought
The mighty hands of God have wrought.
Come, let us now adore Him
And kneel in rev’rence morn and eve,
With fear come we before Him,
From whom we life and all receive.

3 He is our God and Maker,
We are His sheep, His people dear,
If now His precious voice ye hear
Abide within His acre,
And harden not your heart to Him
Nor turn aside to error dim,
The sin of Isr’el ponder,
At Meribah in their distress
When they from God would wander,
At Massa in the wilderness.

4 When Him their fathers tested,
They clearly proved His pow’r and might,
And saw His wonders plain to sight,
Yet was their sense arrested;
He had with them much toil and grief
For forty years without relief.
In no wise then God lieth
To say that they hard-hearted be,
As Scripture testifieth
And so they were continually.

5 He saith, They are confusèd,
They do not know the righteous way,
But from My path they ever stray,
My grace they have abusèd,
My Law on them is not impressed,
So shall they enter not My rest,
The land which, long before them,
I to their pious fathers gave.
In wrath now have I sworn them,
What they despised, they shall not have.

¶ Lord God, we praise Thy merit,
For Thou hast taught us by Thy Word
And turned our heart to own Thee Lord:
Grant us gifts of Thy Spirit,
That we through Christ believe therein,
And firm in truth, to heaven win;
Lord, grant it in Thy favor,
And let us here be born again.
From evil be our Savior;
With our own deeds is all in vain.

Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied / Ihr Heilgen

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied / Ihr Heilgen sollt in ehren” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXLIX, Cantate Domino, with title “An exhortation to thanksgiving for the great grace of God.” The extended title should be noted so as to distinguish it from at least two other paraphrases beginning similarly. The Mixolydian melody by Waldis supports the meter 87.87.44.77.

UNTO the Lord a new song sing,
Ye saints, due praises give Him!
Be glad, O Isr’el, in your King,
With all delight receive Him.
Your progeny / with joy shall be
In Christ the Lord imbuèd,
Their conscience be renewèd

2 His name be praised in manner best;
Hearts, play with gladness glowing!
For He hath grace to all expressed,
To many mercy showing.
They please Him most, / His chosen host,
He helps the poor and lowly,
He makes the high and holy.

3 Let all the saints now joyful be
His goodness praising ever
Within the Christian church, where He
Reveals such grace and favor,
And mouths speak free / His high decree,
That they shall have salvation
From sin, death, and damnation!

4 Let them the sword which God doth hone
Wield without reservation,
To pierce soul, spirit, marrow, bone,
And cleave throughout creation,
To execute / His lawful suit
Among the unbelieving,
With Law the heart aggrieving

5 Let all the righteousness of men
Be by the Law defeated,
The Gospel’s comfort come again,
With cheer the sinner greeted,
That none be lost / nor vainly boast
And build his crumbling tower
On wisdom, works, and power.

6 And let the Lord alone be just,
He hath this writing given:
That all the sin of mankind must
By grace from them be driven.
So doth God save; / this honor have
His saints by His good favor
And praise the Lord forever!

Nun freuet euch und seid fröhlich

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Nun freuet euch und seid fröhlich” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXXII, Lætatus sum in his, with title “A psalm of thanksgiving that God gives a place where His Word can be heard and He be worshiped rightly.” The Aeolian melody by Waldis carries the meter 87.87.447.44.77, a variant of the Long Lutheran Meter (87.87.87.877) employed by Luther for, e.g., “Es wöll uns Gott genädig sein,” which is incidentally suggested by the handwritten marginal note in the copy at Wölffenbüttel. Here, of course, Waldis adds his stamp by inserting half-line rhymes in the middle section. Given the loose, Christocentric, Reformation-themed treatment of the text and the meter agreeing with earlier Lutheran hymns, it is probable that this was among the earlier paraphrases written by Waldis during his imprisonment by the Livonian Order. I give the melody transposed down five semitones.

REJOICE therefore, and joyful be,
Dear Christians, gladly singing!
The Word of God runs mightily
In pureness clearly ringing.
We hail with cheer / its message dear
And stand on faith’s firm grounding.
We seek with haste / the doors of grace
To hear the voice sweet-sounding
Of God’s own declaration.

2 Jerusalem, God’s city fair,
Shall now be new-erected,
Which human doctrines down did tear,
When men their works selected.
Let us go hear / truth pure and clear,
Which God to all declareth:
That Christ His blood / sheds for our good
Our life in heav’n prepareth,
And bears all our transgression.

3 Thereto they come from many lands
To hear God’s will and pleasure,
And what His Holy Word commands,
Beyond man’s pow’r to measure.
Yes, Christ alone / the Law hath done,
Who from on high descended
To us to prove / the Father’s love,
In Him to us commended,
Who grace and heav’n are given.

4 When He our full salvation wrought,
From human statutes freed us,
By pow’r divine us heav’nward brought,
And did His Word bequeath us,
And brought to birth / a church on earth,
To judge profane and holy.
Her He hath giv’n / the keys of heav’n,
What she on earth decideth,
So is it to in heaven.

5 We all did err and go astray,
By doctrine false astounded,
What Antichristian popes did say
Held us in snares, confounded.
Saints’ help we sought, / indulgence bought,
To lighten purgatory,
We had enough / of all such stuff—
Lies of the devil hoary!
We’re freed by Christ our Savior.

6 We wish upon Jerusalem
Peace, vict’ry, and salvation;
For grace and comfort come from Him
Who fights for His creation;
That all may learn / and to Him turn,
A mighty host be raisèd,
A countless flock / for God our Rock,
By which His name is praisèd;
May He bestow His favor!

¶ For this let us the Lord beseech,
And ever praise Him solely,
That by His Spirit He doth teach
To us His Word so holy,
The truth reveals / and heaven seals
And makes us true believers;
And shall indeed / in all succeed,
Till we are made receivers
Of life with Him forever.

Herr Gott, wir danken deiner Güt

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Herr Gott, wir danken deiner Güt” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXXV, Confitebimur tibi, with title “A psalm of thanksgiving and consolation that God will punish the contemptuous and deliver the faithful.” The Dorian melody by Waldis, in the Lutheran hymn meter (87.87.887) is repeated from his version of Psalm II, one of the rare instances of a repetition in his vast array of almost exclusively original melodies. Heugel’s Tenor line shows more play with the melody here in comparison with the straight-ahead line written for Psalm II.

LORD God, we thank Thee for Thy grace,
Thy wondrous works declaring,
We thank thee with a willing case,
Both by ourselves and sharing.
Thy vengeance nears, Thy mighty hand
Shall be the judge in all the land,
And all the earth Thee feareth.

2 The godly Thou from heav’n above
Dost keep upright forever,
That They in patience, hope, and love
By faith may waver never.
Th’ ungodly goeth foolishly
In doctrine false away from Thee
In unbelief he veereth.

3 I said unto the foolish proud,
With errant life and teaching,
Who deal as fools and boast aloud,
Of their own greatness preaching:
Oh, boast not in your pow’r and might,
Lift not yourselves to haughty height,
Nor treat God as a stranger.

4 Speak not so madly ’gainst thy God,
There’s naught that should alarm us,
Our wicked ways, our lies and fraud
Can never hurt or harm us.
We money, friends, and favor have,
Pow’r, wisdom, might, and sense alone,
No man can cause us danger!

5 God shall Himself as Judge arraign
Those who have ’gainst Him spoken;
Their pride He surely shall constrain,
Their horns shall all be broken.
He strikes down those who proudlys stand,
The poor He raises by His hand
From filth to sit in glory.

6 He gives His cup, and maketh man
To drink what He doth offer,
According to God’s will and plan
The godly too must suffer.
But wicked souls at last depart,
Drunk with their sin in mind and heart,
In hell forever grieving.

¶ Thus will I evermore declare,
The God from Jacob praising,
Who doth no wicked tyrant spare,
Cuts off their fury blazing;
That all the righteous on this earth
May be avenged, and joy and mirth
In vict’ry be receiving.

Jauchzet dem Herrn, ihr Christen all

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Jauchzet dem Hern, ihr Christen all” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm C, Jubilate Deo omnis terra, the title “Psalm of thanks and joy that God our Maker, who hath called us through His Word.” The original Aeolian melody by Waldis carries the meter 847.847.44.447 (AABCCBDDEEB).

IN praise, ye Christians, lift your voice
With mighty noise,
And serve the Lord with gladness.
Before His face come joyfully,
Nor fearful be,
Cast off all dread and sadness.
Through Christ His Son / He hath us shown
His gracious Word, / and grace conferred,
To cleanse all sin and madness.

2 Acknowledge that the Lord is God,
To His great laud;
In grace He doth receive us,
Redeemed from sin and death’s abode,
In pasture good
He keeps us; naught may grieve us.
No man can e’er / himself repair,
His life regain / by works of men:
Our powr’s cannot retrieve us.

3 Take none else therefore in His place,
The door of grace
Will unto heaven bear us.
With praise and thanks His name adore,
Who doth outpour
Such grace on us, and spares us
All slips like sand, / His realm shall stand,
In which by grace / our dwelling-place
Through Christ He doth prepare us.

¶ For this His grace of wondrous glow,
Which He would show
To us through Christ our Savior,
Let us to Him give thanks and praise
For all our days,
His name extolling ever,
Live blameless e’er, / in cross forbear,
This vale of tears / traverse till fears
Dissolve in heav’nly favor.

Halleluja, singt und seid froh

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Halleluja, singt und seid froh” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXVII, Laudate Dominum omnes, with title “A psalm of thanksgiving that God will through Christ will call the heathen to the kingdom of grace.” The Ionian melody by Waldis carries the meter 44.44.44.48 (AABBCCDD).

HALLELUJAH! / sing praise, eya!
Ye nations, sing, / and loudly ring
To God be praise, / for all your days,
And honor shown!
His Gospel to all lands make known.

2 Therefore in grace / He hath our race
Redeemed in full / from Satan’s thrall
And sin and death, / and so by faith
Doth life afford
Through Jesus Christ His Son, our Lord.

3 His gracious care / shall keep us e’er
From Satan’s wiles, / all that defiles,
All doctrine false / He doth repulse,
His truth shall be
Upon for us for eternity.

Danket dem Herrn, und lasst euch lehrn

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Danket dem Herrn, und laßt euch lehrn” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXXXVI, Confitemini Domino, with title “A psalm of thanksgiving, to trust in God, who has always so graciously helped, and still does, in the utmost need.” The melody by Waldis carries the meter 448.448.88.448, with lines 6 and 11 featuring a repeated refrain, echoing that of the original Psalm text.

THANKS to the Lord / your God afford,
Learn just how good and kind is He
His works show bright / His strength and might,
His mercy lasts eternally!
High o’er the gods of every land,
He holds all rule within His hand.
Thanks from your heart / to Him impart:
His mercy lasts eternally!

2 He made dark, light, / and day and night,
The heav’nly lights that waver,
The earth and sea / spread mightily
His mercy lasts eternally!
The two great lamps, the sun and moon
The skies with shining stars hath strewn,
Which all declare / His wonders rare.
His mercy lasts eternally!

3 He Isr’el sought / and forth them brought,
From Egypt’s bondage mightily;
The firstborn killed, / with fear men filled:
His mercy lasts eternally!
His mighty hand led wondrously
That favored host through the Red Sea,
Therein He cast / Pharaoh at last,
His mercy lasts eternally!

4 They free did pass / through wilderness,
And in His generosity
God stilled their dread / with heav’nly bread,
His mercy lasts eternally!
Great kings He struck down by His pow’r,
Slew nations, made the peoples cow’r,
And put the land / in Isr’el’s hand,
His mercy lasts eternally!

5 Of grace He thought, / His people brought
To peace and joy and victory;
Out of their woe / He bade them go,
His mercy lasts eternally!
All flesh with sust’nance he supplies,
Alone He’s holy, good, and wise.
O’er all He reigns, / all things sustains.
His mercy lasts eternally!

6 As He before / in days of yore
And showed them boundless clemency;
So will He now / such grace endow,
His mercy lasts eternally!
Therefore give thanks in heaven high,
Receive His Word, be ruled thereby,
Who there confides / in Him abides.
His mercy lasts eternally!

Ihr Knecht des Herrn, singt und seid froh

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Ihr Knecht des Herrn, singt und seid froh” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXXXV, Laudate nomen, with title, “Psalm of thanksgiving for the benefits and deliverance of God from the enemies and idolatry.” The Phrygian melody by Waldis bears the meter 847.847.44.447. Zahn remarks that its time changes are noteworthy.

YE servants of the Lord, with awe,
Hallelujah!
Sing to His name your praises,
Ye that perform the will of God
In His abode,
Make known His gifts and graces.
His Holy Word, / our rock assured,
Through which He would / do us all good,
High from the heav’nly places.

2 His tender kindness and His love
Shine from above,
For Jacob He elected,
And Israel His prize to be,
All-gloriously
His wondrous works effected.
At every hour / Love doth He show’r,
Proclaim and sing, / let gladly ring,
As He Himself selected.

3 I speak the truth, from mock’ry free,
The Lord is He,
True God, all gods excelling;
Whate’er He pleaseth, that He doth,
In heav’n and earth
And all within them dwelling;
Both low and high, / the ground and sky,
The places deep, / the mountain steep,
His praise therefore be telling!

4 He makes the vapors to ascend
From earths’s far end,
And makes the rain to shower;
He maketh lightnings, thunder loud,
The stormy cloud,
And calleth from its bower
The stormy blast, / and wind at last,
Out of its hoard / where it was stored,
To blow with mighty power.

5 He smote the firstborn, man and beast,
Death’s toll increased,
In Egypt grief abounded;
They saw the signs and tokens true,
And naught could do,
God’s hand their hearts astounded.
Struck Pharaoh’s line / and servants fine,
Great nations slew / and overthrew,
And many a host confounded.

6 Yea, mighty kings’ defeat He wrought,
And brought to naught,
The Amorites’ king Sihon,
And Og the king of Bashan grand,
All Canaan’s land,
To kneel before His Zion.
He gave their land / in to the hand
A heritage / for every age,
To Israel, his scion.

7 Thy name, O Lord, endures for aye,
With mighty sway,
In every generation;
Thou shalt be Judge of all Thy race,
With light of grace
And in due time, damnation.
They that serve Thee / shall honored be,
Thy grace Thou send’st / and them amend’st,
Prepared for Thy salvation.

8 No idols we with love enfold,
Silver and gold
They are, and mortals made them;
They, having mouths, no word can find,
Their eyes are blind,
They know not what is prayed them:
Deaf is their ear, / they do not hear.
Who trusts in them / builds to his shame,
They cannot help or aid him.

9 O house of Isr’el, bless the Lord,
Due praise accord,
O house of Aaron, bless Him!
All ye that live in godly fear,
The Lord revere,
Levi, with praise address Him!
In Zion’s rest / the Lord be blest!
Sing ye with awe, / Hallelujah!
By grace we may possess Him!

Dein Lob will ich erheben

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Dein Lob will ich erheben” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXLV, Exaltabo te Deus, with title “A psalm of praise and thanks for the manifold grace and mercy of God.”  The Ionian melody by Waldis uses the meter 78.78.76.776 (ABABCDCCD), which is also used for his paraphrase of Psalm LXXIX. The note at the top of Heugel’s tenor line reads “In unisono, in unison.”

I WILL extol and praise Thee,
My God, O King, Thine be the praise!
Forever will I bless Thee
And praise Thy precious name always!
Great be Thine adoration,
Both now and evermore,
Thy works give declaration
In every generation
That Thou art mercy’s store.

2 Great is His honor glorious,
Ineffable His wondrous grace,
His Word goes forth victorious,
Both sire and son its mem’ry trace.
Thy works, O Lord, adore Thee,
Thy wonders I declare,
The greatness of Thy glory
Puts us in awe before Thee,
With all the news we share.

3 Thou with Thy goodness movest
Men to intone Thy righteousness,
Which to them all Thou provest,
With patience, mercy, graciousness;
Thou full art of compassion,
Which to Thy works Thou show’st,
And so Thy holy nation,
Thy church and congregation,
Of Thy great power boast!

4 Thy kingdom shines with glory,
Where Thou to sinners mercy show’st,
Thy pow’r goes forth before Thee
Hid in the cross to all Thy host.
Thou makest proclamation
On earth to all mankind
Of freedom and salvation
From devil, sin, damnation:
We grace with Thee can find.

5 Thy kingdom lasteth ever,
Thy rule abides from hour to hour,
Thy might is hindered never,
Great is Thy kingdom’s pride and pow’r.
All those in weakness falling
Upholdest Thou in grace,
The bowed down, on Thee calling,
Thou sav’st from sins appalling,
And dost with mercy raise.

6 All eyes to Thee are lifted,
Thou giv’st them food in season due;
To all Thy goods are gifted
By Thy own hand each day anew,
When Thou dost pour Thy blessing
On every living thing.
Then joy their hearts caressing
Moves all to be confessing
And loud Thy praise to sing.

7 The Lord is righteous ever
In all that He doth say and do
Grave in His high endeavor,
His works are holy, good, and true.
To all who seek His favor,
In earnest on Him call
He grants His mercy ever,
From harm will their Savior,
And help when ills befall.

8 The godly hearts’ desiring
The Lord fulfils, for Him they fear;
He hears their cry untiring
With help and comfort soon is near.
Round those who love Him truly
His shelter strong is cast;
The wicked and unruly
Who them aggrieve unduly,
He shall destroy at last.

9 Therefore with praise resounding,
My mouth shall make His glories known,
For all His gifts abounding,
Which He to all mankind hath shown.
Let all of flesh endeavor
To bless with fervency
His holy name forever,
And blush to own it never,
For all eternity!

Danket all dem freundlichen Gott

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Danket all dem freundlichen Gott” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CVII, Confitemini Domino, with title, “A psalm of thanksgiving that God graciously delivers in all manner of physical distress and temporal calamity.” The Phrygian melody by Waldis follows the meter 847.847 D.

LET all give thanks to God, who hath
Saved you from wrath
And from distress redeemèd.
All ye who have His wonders known,
Which He hath shown,
Let Him be now esteemèd!
Who brought you here from all the earth
From from south and north,
From sunrise and sun-setting;
From all earth’s corners thee He brings
All goodly things,
Your needs all daily getting.

2 The people went through deserts drear
Both far and near,
And found no city dwelling;
They hungered, thirsted, nigh did faint,
Where’er they went,
All sights their hope dispelling.
They to the Lord cried eve and morn,
In trouble torn,
He by the right way led them,
Gave them enough as they had need
Of food indeed,
And to their freedom sped them.

3 They, great and small, should have outpoured
Thanks to their Lord,
Nor let aught in this hinder,
That He had shown such grace renowned
To all around
With mighty deads of wonder.
He to the naked garments gave,
In all would save,
The hungry ever sated.
He satisfied the longing soul,
Did thirst control,
All good He demonstrated.

4 Those in the darkness captive were,
They did procure
God’s wrath with their transgressing.
And for their great iniquity
Calamity
Upon them sore was pressing.
And no man came to their relief,
To end their grief,
But all would let them perish.
Then was their heart perplexèd sore,
They troubles bore,
And hopes of death did cherish.

5 When they in faith cried to the Lord
With one accord,
He broke their bands asunder,
From darkness led them into day,
Freed from dismay
And shame that they were under.
Him let them thank for every boon
Which He hath shown
To all men’s generations,
He broke the bar and iron door
Against his pow’r
Must fail their machinations.

6 The fools, whom God by grave disease
Brought to their knees
Because of their transgressions,
Who muttered then beneath their breath,
Grew sick to death,
So that no man could save them,
By troubles thus they wisdom learned,
So that they turned
And God in grace received them;
He healed their ills, gave them His Word,
Their pray’rs He heard,
From sin’s deserts relieved them.

7 To God they sing their thankful song
Their whole life long
For all His grace and blessing;
They live in fear and Him implore
Forevermore
To keep them from transgressing.
His name they praise continually
Most solemnly
With shouting and rejoicing,
That He among the heathen race
With boundless grace
His wondrous works is voicing.

8 Those who do bus’ness far from home
Where sea-waves foam
And water-billows tower,
Have seen how storms will form above,
And seas will move,
Have known God’s mighty power.
Upon the waters high they sit,
Fall to the pit,
Their goods and body pelted,
There was no help found anywhere,
They wavered there,
Their soul for anguish melted.

9 Those who cried out to God in fear
That He might hear
Their voice of apprehension,
Forbid the raging of the sea,
And let there be
Peace from the storm’s dissension,
They also should for such a grace
Give God the praise
And laud without cessation;
Exalt His glory, praise make known
To Him alone
Within the congregation.

10 Their precious watersprings were dried,
Their rivers died,
And water ceased its flowing
For parching heat and evil wrought,
Their land bore not,
The fruit no more was growing,
For all the sin and mischief sly
Committed by
The people therein dwelling,
Wherefore God also chastised them
With hunger grim,
And woes beyond all telling.

11 He wilderness to water turned,
Blest what was burned
With springs and rainy season,
So that the field again was sown,
Reaped, cut and mown—
His blessing was the reason.
Thus might they make their city grow,
The acres sow;
With plenty God would grace them
Of cattle, fruit, and every good;
These He bestowed,
For which they ought to praise Him.

12 When they by tyrants were oppressed,
Put to the test,
Afflicted, filled with sorrow,
He did the princes all despise,
Made tumults rise,
And battles eve and morrow.
The poor were sheltered by the Lord
From sinners’ horde,
From mis’ry and distresses.
He mightily defends their cause,
Their number grows,
And by His might increases.

13 Yea, when the righteous eyes shall see
This come to be,
They shall rejoice right gladly.
Iniquity her mouth shall stay
And nothing say,
Her faults repenting sadly.
Whoso hath wisdom now will see
This verily,
Its proper meaning knoweth,
What benefit, all words above—
What grace and love
The Lord His people showeth!

¶ For this let Christians give to God
All thanks and laud,
Who hath these gifts receivèd
From heaven, from God’s highest throne,
In Christ His Son
On earth, where’er believèd;
Who through His suff’ring, death, and blood
For all our good
Fulfilled His work as Savior;
Give Him the honor, thanks, and praise,
In all our ways,
As is our duty ever.

Und auff den wassern füren,
Sahen, daß sich ein Sturm erregt,
Das Meer bewegt,
Die Gottes macht erfuren.
Das wasser hoch gen himel stund,
Fiel in abgrund,
Ir leib und gut da wagten,
Da war keyn rath bei in all gar,
Warn wanckelbar,
Ir seeln vor angst verzagten.

9 Die schrien auch zu Gott dem Herrn,
Daß Ers wolt hörn,
In irem ellend bitter,
Die wüterei verbieten wolt,
Daß schweygen solt,
Und stilln das ungewitter.
Die sollen auch für solche gnad,
Und wunderthat,
Den HERREN allzeit preisen,
Und rhümen seine ehr alleyn,
In seiner gmeyn,
Bein alten und den weisen.

10 Die, welchen ire wasserquell,
Versiegen schnell,
Ir bäch nit kundten fliessen,
Vor dürrer hitz und ungefug,
Ir land nicht trug,
Und kondtens nicht geniessen,
Umb der Sünd willn und missethat,
Die bgangen hat
Das volck das drinnen wonet,
Drumb sie auch Gott mit hunger strafft,
Und solchs verschafft,
Daß ir nicht würd verschonet.

11 Und Er das trucken wider netz,
Das land ergetz
Mit brunnen und mit regen,
Daß man den acker wider bseht,
Erndt, schneidt und meht,
Durch seine gnad und segen.
Auff daß sie bawten eine statt,
Und assen sat,
Begundten sie zu mehren,
An gut, an vih, an aller hab,
Die in Gott gab,
Dafür sie in solln ehren.

12 Die durch Tyrannen mit unrecht
Wurden geschwecht,
Geengstet und gezwungen,
Und die Fürsten wurden veracht,
Auffrur gemacht,
Zur gegenwehr gedrungen,
Und der HERR schafft dem armen schutz,
Fürs bösen trutz,
In not und im Ellende.
Er helt in mit gewalt bei recht,
Und sein geschlecht
Vermehrt an allen enden.

13 Ja, wanns die frommen werden sehn,
Daß wirt geschehn,
So werden sie sichs frewen,
Der boßheyt wirt das maul gestopfft,
Und gar verpfropfft,
Ir thun muß sie gerewen.
Wer nun hat weißheyt und verstandt,
Der faßts zuhandt,
Und weyß Es recht zu deuten,
Wie groß unaußsprechlich wolthat,
Und gar vil gnad,
Der HERR erzeygt den leuten.

¶ Dafür sol hie die Christlich gmein
Im danckbar sein,
Die solche grossen gaben
Vom himel auß seim höchsten thron,
In seinem Son,
Auff erd empfangen haben,
Der durch sein leiden, todt und blut,
Uns alln zugut,
Groß ding hat außgerichtet,
Im zusagen lob, ehr und preiß,
Auff alle weiß,
Sind wir im stedts verpflichtet.

Daß man Gott lobe, dank und sing

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase “Daß man Gott lobe, dank und sing” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXLVII, Laudate Dominum, with title “A psalm of thanksgiving for all manner of temporal and spiritual gifts, the Holy Word, and right service of God.” The Ionian melody by Waldis uses the meter 847.847.84.77. Heugel’s Tenor line features interesting but somewhat typical compositional note: “Fuga in epidiapason post 2 tempora,” that is, “Canon in the octave above after two semibreves.”

TO praise our God’s a pleasant thing;
To Him then bring
Your praises loud resounding.
Jerusalem He buildeth fast
And those outcast
He brings to life abounding.
The broken heart doth health regain,
And all their pain
By Him is gently mended,
Their sorrows all are tended.

2 He numbereth each heav’nly star,
Both near and far,
To each a name assigneth,
Great is His power, omnipotent,
His government
No man in whole divineth.
The Lord on high lifts up the meek
But those who seek
To work their mischief ever,
From life the Lord doth sever.

3 Sing to the Lord, His thanks propound,
The harp let sound,
To God your praises showing,
Who makes the cloud for heav’n a house,
The rain doth rouse
That produce may be growing.
All that hath life, and cry and howl,
All beast and fowl,
From God his food is given,
Yea, e’en the youthful raven.

4 The Lord the horse’s strength doth scorn,
All works pride-born,
Therein He hath no pleasure,
Nor in strong legs of men delights,
That leap the heights,
And fight, and know no leisure.
The Lord on him doth pleasure place
Who for His grace
Awaits, and so confideth;
On him His grace abideth.

5  Praise thou the Lord, Jerusalem,
With great acclaim,
O Zion, sing Him praises,
Who strengtheneth thy city-gate,
Sets bars thereat,
Thy children in thee blesses.
And maketh peace within thy bounds,
Thy wall surrounds
With pow’r, and thee supplieth
With food that satisfieth.

6 He makes His Word clear, bright, and pure,
Run swift and sure,
In all the world it ringeth,
The hoarfrost scatters like the ash,
Makes ice to crash,
The snow like wool it flingeth.
Who stands before His cold assured?
He sends His Word,
He sends His south-wind o’er it,
All disappear before it.

7 To Jacob He His law doth tell,
To Israel
He shows His Word, nor spareth.
He doth not with the heathen so,
That they should know
The justice He declareth.
For this His grace we give Him praise
And, singing, raise
Our Hallelujah ever,
Let naught from Him us sever.

GERMAN
Daß man Gott lobe, danck und sing,
Ich köstlich ding, [Ist…]
Drumb lobt in auch mit schalle,
Jerusalem Er bawet fest,
Und nit verleßt
Seine verjagten alle,
Er heylet die zerbrochen hertz,
Und all ir schmertz
Thut Er in sanfft verbinden,
Ir trübniß muß verschwinden.

2 Am himel zelt Er all die Stern,
Beyd nah und fern,
Sie all mit namen nennet,
Gros ist sein krafft, und hat keyn end,
Sein Regiment
Niemandt gnugsam erkennet,
Der HERR richt die Ellenden auff,
Und stößt zu hauff
Die Gottlosen darnider,
Daß sie nicht kommen wider.

3 Singt dem HERRN umb einander scharpff,
Und auff der harpff
Lobt unsern Gott mit ehren,
Der den himel mit wolcken deckt,
Regen erweckt,
Daß sich das gwechs muß mehren,
Alls was das leben hat allhie,
Vögel und vieh,
Müssen ir futter haben,
Dau die jungen Raben.

4 Der HERR veracht all stoltze werck,
Des rosses sterck,
Dran hat Er keynn genügen,
Im gfallen nicht die starcken bein,
Die grüstet sein
Zum lauffen, kampff und kriegen.
Der HERR an denen gfallen hat,
Die seiner gnad
Warten, und im vertrawen,
Die solln sein güte schawen.

5 Preise Jerusalem den HERRN,
Mit grossen ehrn,
Sion lob in mit sinnen,
Der feste machet deine Thor,
Schleußt rigel vor,
Segnet dein kinder drinnen,
Und deinen grentzen fride schafft,
Durch seine krafft,
Rreichlich thut dich erneren,
Und all denn unglück wehren.

6 Sein Wort gibt lauter, reyn und hell,
Das laufft gar schnell,
In aller welt erschollen,
Den reiffen wie die aschen strewt,
Mit schlossen hewt,
Den Schnee wirfft wie die wollen,
Wer kan für seinem frost bestehn?
Sein wort leßt gehn,
Das schmeltzt, aufftawt, gar verschwindt,
Wann drüber weht der Sudwind.

7 Er zeygt Israel seine Recht,
Jacob seim knecht
Thut Er sein wort nicht sparen,
So thut Er keynen Heyden mehr,
Daß sie sein lehr
Und recht solten erfaren.
Dafür wir im stedts sagen lob,
Und singen drob
Haleluia mit freuden,
Uns nimmer von im scheyden.

Ach Gott, wie lieblich und wie fein

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Ach Gott, wie lieblich und wie fein” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXXXIV, Quam dilecta, with title “Psalm of thanks and praise that God has preserved His Word and church, and will do so.” The Aeolian melody by Waldis follows the meter 887.887.84.48.

O GOD, how lovely and how fine
The teaching of Thy Word divine,
Heard in Christ’s congregation!
Therefore my soul doth seek the place
Where sounds the echoes of Thy grace,
Thy name, and adoration.
For that my soul and body have
Great joy and love
All things above—
The Lord our God alone doth save!

2 The sparrow builds his place of rest,
The swallow trusteth in her nest,
Her precious young there nest’ling.
So do I gladly seek, like both,
Thine altar, Lord of Sabaoth,
And wait upon Thy blessing.
Blest is Thy Christian people poor
That trustingly
Doth build on Thee
And glorifies Thee evermore!

3 Yea, blest is he whose strength Thou art,
Nor on man’s works will set his heart,
But in Thy thinking goeth,
And passing through this valley drear,
Proclaims Thy Word both far and near,
And grace on all bestoweth.
They through Thy Spirit are refreshed,
A mighty host,
God is their boast,
With grace and blessing they are dressed.

4 And by Thy grace from them proceed
Full many a sign and wondrous deed
Thy doctrine’s truth asserting,
With joy they to the battle go,
Gain many a vict’ry o’er the foe,
Oft many souls converting,
So that ’tis felt in every land,
All is made right,
By God’s great might,
He does all by His strong right hand.

5 Therefore, Lord God, forsake us not,
Give ear and hear our
And look Thou down from heaven,
The kingdom of Thy Christians see,
Who hold Thy Christ all faithfully,
Nor from this trust are driven.
Thou art their Glory, Boast, and Fame,
Their Shield and Sword;
Therefore, O Lord,
Thou never wilt abandon them.

6 In truth I honestly may say,
With Thee far better is a day
Than thousand years without Thee;
I would far rather be the least
Among Thy Christians at Thy feast
And shepherds round about Thee,
Than in th’ ungodly’s palace dwell,
Where none recall
Thy glories all,
Nor of Thy Word and Gospel tell.

7 The Lord God is my Sun and Shield,
On him are grace and glory sealed,
His saints lack not for treasure;
For all the worldlings’ mockery
He will give us unceasingly
Rich gifts beyond all measure.
Blest is the man that trusts in Him,
God ready stands
With helping hands
In times of grief or danger grim.
