Die Weisen zu Herodis Zeit

Here is my translation of the Epiphany hymn, “Die Weisen zu Herodis Zeit” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for the Feast of the Three Kings (Epiphany). Gesius 1605 appoints a chorale setting of the

Mel.: Christum wir sollen loben schon.

THE wise men in King Herod’s day
From eastern shores so far away
Came trav’ling to Jerusalem
When Christ was born in Bethlehem.

2 In Salem they made inquiry:
Where might the newborn Monarch be,
Long promised by God’s prophets true?
For we would pay Him honor due.

3 For we have seen His tok’ning star
In Orient countries shining far,
And we to worship him are come.
Who is there can show us His home?

4 The tidings troubled Herod sore,
And all Jerusalem much more,
He gathered all the scribes as one,
And called the chief priests to his throne.

5 They counsel took, and found, and read:
Thus hath the prophet Micah said,
From Judah’s town of Bethlehem
Their Savior-Prince shall come to them.

6 Then Herod (crafty fox was he)
Did call the wise man privily,
And carefully inquired what time
The star appeared in heaven’s clime.

7 And said: Go now and search with care
To find the Child abiding there,
And when ye find Him, bring me word,
That I too may adore the Lord.

8 The wise men, they departed then,
And lo, the star appeared again,
Before them went, and brightly glowed,
And stood above the child’s abode.

9 They came into the house with joy
And found the holy infant Boy,
Before Him kneeling, reverence showed,
Gold, frankincense, and myrrh bestowed.

10 They in a dream God’s warning learn:
They should to Herod not return,
Nor trust what that false man might say;
So went they home another way.

*11 Lord Christ, on us Thy star let shine,
And lead us to Thy house divine,
That we may rightly Thee adore,
As did the wise men long before.

Die Weisen zu Herodis Zeit
wohl aus dem Morgenland sehr weit
gen Jerusalem kamen dar,
da Jesus schon geboren war.

2 Sie fragten in der Stadt ohn Scheu
wo der neu König gboren sei,
der den Jüden verheißen wär,
sie wollten ihm erzeigen Ehr.

3 Denn wir gesehen han sein Stern
leuchten im Morgenland gar fern,
und kommen ihn zu beten an;
wer ist der uns ihn zeigen kann?

4 Der Mähr erschrack Herodes sehr,
und Jerusalem noch vielmehr,
die Schriftglährten er sammeln ließ,
und hohen Priester zu sich hieß.

5 Sie sagten nach gehabtem Rath
also Michas geweißagt hat:
Aus Bethlem im Jüdischen Land
soll kommen dein Fürst und Heiland.

6 Der Fuchs Herodes ganz heimlich
die Weisen fordern ließ zu sich
mit Fleiß von ihn erfraget er,
wenn ihn der Stern erschienen wär.

7 Und sprach: Zieht nun mit Freuden hin
mit Fleiß forscht nach dem Kindelein,
und zeigt mirs darnach wider an,
auf daß ichs auch anbeten kann.

8 Die Weisen aber zogen hin,
und sich der Stern ihn wider erschien,
er ging ihn für und leuchtet klar,
und blieb stehn da das Kindlein war.

9 Da gingen sie ins Haus hinein
mit Freud, und fundens Kindelein,
und fielen nieder auf ihr Knie,
Gold, Weirauch, Myrrh ihm schenkten sie.

10 In einem Traum befahl Gott ihnn:
Ihr sollt nicht wiederziehn dahin,
zu Herodes dem falschen Mann,
da zogn sie heim ein ander Bahn.

*11 Herr Christ, laß uns leuchten dein Stern,
und von dem Kripplein sein nicht fern,
auf daß wir dich recht beten an,
gleich wie die Weisen han gethan.

Nun freut euch alle Völker schon

 Psalm XLVII.
A Psalm of the children of Korah, to precent.

¶ It is a prophecy of Christ, how He should ascend and become king over all the world without any sword-blows, only by shouting, singing, praising, glorifying, that is, by the joyful preaching of the Holy Gospel, to hear, learn, sing, and confess which it exhorts all men; and describes the King with His majesty, power, authority, honor, love, election of grace, judgment, and righteousness.

Dominus exaltans.

With gladness men God’s praises swell,
For He the people ruleth well,
With shouts of joy He high ascends,
Exalted high to all earth’s ends.

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein

ALL people, now with gladness sing,
And clap yours hands rejoicing,
And shout to Christ, God’s Son, the King,
Round earth glad anthems voicing.
For He who is Most High of all,
Is Jesus Christ, the King supreme,
O’er all the earth He reigneth.

2 Beneath us nations now that rage
He will with might be bringing;
He chose us for His heritage,
And so we will be singing
To Him a song of praise, that He
Hath loved us so; thus glad are we
That He hath made us glorious.

3 With shouts of joy our God goes up,
With trumpet strain resounding.
And with Him goes a mighty troop
Of fellows glad surrounding,
Sing praise to God, to Him sing praise,
To His praise your voices raise,
Sing to our King your praises.

4 For God is King of all the earth,
Its farthest shore commanding;
So great and matchless is His worth,
Oh, sing with understanding!
Above the heathen He doth soar
A mighty King forevermore,
Set on His throne most holy.

5 His kingdom through the world extends,
To all earth’s ends He reigneth,
And many
‿a prince before Him bends
And no more proud remaineth,
But comes to faith and heav’nly birth,
For God among the shields of earth
Is mightily exalted.

Nun freut euch alle Völker schon
frohlockt mit euern Händen,
und jauchzet Christo Gottes Sohn,
fröhlich an allen Enden.
Denn er der aller höchster ist,
der größte König Jesus Christ,
auf dem ganzen Erdboden.

2 Die Völker wird er unter uns
durch sein göttlich Gwalt zwingen,
zum Erbtheil hat er uns aus Gunst
erwählt, drum wir ihm singen
ein Lied zu Lob, daß er uns so,
gar hoch geliebt, und sind des froh,
daß er uns herrlich machet.

3 Mit Jauchzen unser Gott fährt auf,
mit der Posaunen helle.
Mit ihm zugleich ein großer Hauf
der freuden Mitgesellen,
lobsinget Gott, lobsinget ihm,
lobsinget ihm mit heller Stimm,
unserm König lobsinget.

4 Denn Gott ist König auf der Erd,
auf dem ganzen Erdkreise,
drum singet ihm, er ists wohl werth,
klüglich mit schöner weise,
denn er über die Heiden ist
ein König groß zu aller Frist,
sitzt auf seim heilgen Stuhle.

5 Sein Reich geht durch die ganze Welt,
er herrscht an allen Enden.
Manch großer Herr ihm auch zufällt,
zu ihm aufhebt sein Hände,
wird im Glauben ein guter Christ,
denn Gott sehr hoch erhaben ist,
auf Erden bei den Schilden.

Nun freu dich, Tochter Zion, sehr

 Zechariah’s Song of the King Christ, Zech. 9.

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.

O ZION’S daughter, joyful be!
Shout, Salem’s daughter, singing,
Behold, thy King comes unto thee
For thee salvation bringing:
He cometh just, yet meek and poor,
That He may open mercy’s door,
And save the lowly sinners.

2 He’ll lay the horse and chariot low,
All weapons shall be broken,
Cut off shall be the battle-bow,
Peace shall by Him be spoken:
To heathen peace’s truth He’ll teach,
His rule from sea to sea shall reach,
And to the earth’s far corners.

Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XCVI, Cantate Domino, with title, “A psalm of instruction and prophecy of the kingdom of Christ.” The Dorian melody by Waldis follows the longer Lutheran meter (87.87.87.877), employed, e.g., by Luther in his hymn “Es wöll uns Gott genädig sein” but with rhyme of the last line (ABABCDCDD).

A NEW song sing ye to the Lord,
In all the world adore ye,
Hold not your peace; with one accord
Unto His name give glory,
And glorify His wonders all,
Show forth His great salvation,
How He repairs our sinful fall,
Now make ye proclamation,
To Him turn every nation!

2 The Lord is great and wonderful,
Let Him be ever praisèd!
High o’er all gods the Lord doth rule,
In highest heaven raisèd.
All heathen gods mere idols are;
A fool on them relieth.
God’s like is found not near nor far,
Heav’n He with life supplieth,
He every heart descrieth.

3 Among His church He doth possess
All majesty and glory.
There saints live by His righteousness,
His grace their constant story—
How He hath mightily undone
All sin and devastation,
Through Jesus Christ, His only Son,
Who died for our salvation
And claimed us as His nation.

4 Therefore come ye all nations, come,
To God the glory giving,
His pow’r is shown to Christendom,
Give sacrifices living,
And worship now His holy name,
O worship now before Him
In beauty of His holiness:
He wills that we implore Him,
And for His gifts adore Him!

5 Lo, He hath founded for our good
A kingdom like no other,
When He through suff’ring, cross, and blood
His course took to the Father.
Above all worlds He reigns as King,
His realm must stand forever,
He righteously rules everything.
All those who own Him Savior,
Them shall He cast out never.

6 Let all things therefore joyful be
In heav’n and earth existing,
The sea let roar, the wind blow free,
Imbued with joy persisting,
Before the Lord, who comes to earth
The judge the ostentatious
And humble with His righteous truth,
To damn all lies fallacious,
And to the just be gracious.

Zum Herrn aus meim Geschlechte

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Zum Herrn aus meim Geschlechte” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm CX, Dixit Dominus, with title “Christ’s royal priesthood” and melody assignment “Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn.” A later variant is known from Schütz’s settings, beginning “Der Herr ſprach zu meim HErren,” in which the first four lines have undergone some euphonic revision, but show little substantial difference. The constraints of the meter and the English language, moreover, would render any differences invisible. Luther writes of the psalm,

It is a prophecy of Christ, telling how He will be an everlasting King and Priest, and glorified and acknowledged as true God seated at the right hand of God. And this psalm has no like in all of Scripture, and is fittingly cited as the most notable one wherewith to confirm the Christian faith. For Christ is nowhere prophesied as King and everlasting Priest with such clear and solid words, and with which the priesthood of Aaron is annulled, even as the psalm is further and more gloriously emphasized in the epistle to the Hebrews. It has also been expounded by us. For it were a pity that this psalm should not be emphasized richly and mightily among Christians.

THE Lord, my God and Father,
Gave to my Lord command:
Sit Thou above all other
Enthroned at My right hand
In majesty and splendor;
Thy foe and Thine offender
Shall as Thy footstool stand!

2 The Lord shall send from Zion
Thy kingdom’s rod of pow’r,
The Word, God’s chosen Scion,
Shall be proclaimed that hour
All men shall bow before Thee,
When Thou shalt rule in glory
Among Thy foes who cow’r.

3 When Thou art shown victorious,
Thy people willingly
Shall bring Thee off’rings glorious
Robed in Thy sanctity,
Thy children, the elected,
Like dew of heav’n perfected,
Shall be new-born to Thee.

4 The Lord an oath hath spoken,
And shall repent it ne’er;
His pledge shall not be broken:
Thou art a Priest fore’er,
All blessings to us sending,
Lord without start or ending,
Melchizedek’s true Heir!

5 The Lord with indignation
Upon Thy right shall smite
The heathen generation,
And set all things to right.
He shall the princes shatter,
The heathen nations scatter,
And put all foes to flight.

6 Though of the brook of anguish
He drinketh in the way,
And on the cross must languish
And die th’ appointed day,
He shall with life be gifted,
He shall, with head uplifted,
Be King of all for aye.

Der Herr ist Köng und residiert

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Der Herr ist Köng und residiert” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XCIX, Dominus regnavit irascantur, with title “Christ a holy King” and melody assignment “Nun freut euch, lieben Christen Gmein.” Luther writes of the psalm,

It is a psalm of instruction exhorting the people of Israel to praise their God in Zion, although the heathen rage at the fact that they are a special people of God unlike others, and they must suffer much because of it. For it extols Moses, Aaron, and Samuel, who were the heads of the people of Israel (v. 6), but it also teaches (as the words read) the people of Israel that they should know that the true divine service consists not of offering many livestock, but acknowledging His wonders and thanking Him for them, &c., and that He makes them upright and delivers them from sin (v. 4). But for us it is a prophecy of Christ, who governs the true Zion throughout the world, and has established His throne of grace and footstool in heaven, at which all the world is angered and becomes mad and foolish, and persecutes and murders Christians.

THE Lord is King! On cherubim
In heaven He is sitting;
Let people, trembling, honor Him,
And earth give praises fitting!
In Zion is His dwelling place;
The Lord o’er every tribe and race
High in His glory reigneth.

2 His holy name’s a wondrous thing
And should be praisèd duly;
Within the kingdom of this King
Is judgment loved most truly;
He makes men upright in His sight,
And righteousness and judgment right
He executes in Jacob.

3 Exalt the Lord our God always,
Praise at His footstool giving,
For He is holy, and His praise
Among His priests is living:
See, Moses, Aaron, Samuel—
They called on Him when need befell,
And He in mercy answered.

4 God in a cloudy pillar spake
And promised He would save them;
Thy Holy Law they did not break—
The ord’nance Thy hand gave them;
Thou art the Lord our God alone,
Thou heardest them, and at our groan
Our faithful plea didst answer.

5 Thou didst reprove with gentle rod,
Forgiving misdeeds faulty;
Therefore, O Lord, the holy God,
We fittingly exalt Thee,
And worship at Thy holy hill,
And praise Thee and Thy gracious will,
For Thou, Lord God, art holy!

Großer Mittler, der zur Rechten

Here is my translation of the Ascension / Session hymn, “Großer Mittler, der zur Rechten” (Johann Jacob Rambach, d. 1735) as found in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #211. Focusing on Jesus’ priestly office as intercessor and advocate for mankind before the Father, it is appropriate for Exaudi. It first appears in the author’s Haus-Gesangbuch (Frankfurt/Leipzig, 1735). A revised form omitting sts. 4, 6, and 7 sometimes occurs. The appointed melody is originally “Jesu, der du meine Seele,” but in the Wisc. hymnal, “Alle Menschen müssen sterben.”

MIGHTY Mediator, sitting
At Thy mighty Father’s right,
Ever for His flock entreating
In Thy realm of grace and light,
Where upon Thy throne supernal,
Crown’d with majesty eternal,
Thou art worshiped and adored
By Thy hosts with one accord.

2 Thou redemption’s work hast ended,
All Thy sacrifice is done;
Of the toils to Thee commended
Thou hast finished every one!
Thou hast gotten grace, salvation,
When Thou diedst in our station,
And Thy rising gloriously
Shows to us our victory.

3 Now, Lord, is Thine occupation
In the heav’nly holy place,
To ensure the allocation
Of the blessed spoils of grace
To all those whom Thou dost chasten,
And who to Thy mercy hasten;
Now upon us pour from Thee
Blessing and salvation free!

4 On Thy breast Thou ever bearest
Thy own people’s precious name,
For the righteous seed Thou carest,
Hast in them Thy great acclaim;
Speaking for Thy saints affrighted,
That they be with Thee united,
In Thy Father’s house dost pray
That they might dwell there for aye.

5 Thy heart ne’er the poor forsaketh,
Who in worldly bondage wait,
But with all compassion breaketh
To behold their wretched state.
That Thy Father would receive them
And not for their works aggrieve them,
That He would their minds amend—
Thither Thy petitions tend!

6 Yea, in Thy humiliation
When upon Thy shoulders lay
All man’s sin and condemnation,
Thou didst to the Father pray,
Now with groaning, now with sighing,
In the place of sinners dying—
Oh, with what humility
Thou that hour didst make Thy plea!

7 Now Thy pray’r support is given,
With omnipotence allied,
Since within the tent of heaven
Sits Thy Manhood glorified;
Now is Satan’s cry refuted
By Thy glory undisputed,
Now Thy better-speaking blood
Justifies our cause with God.

8 All the fruits of Thy lamenting
To the Father Thou hast brought,
Ever gladly representing
Thy dear sheep, so dearly bought,
Praying that they might be speeded
With the life and powèr needed,
And those souls drawn unto Thee
Who as yet Thy mercy flee.

9 Mighty Mediator, Savior,
In Thy holy place divine,
Who hast shown Thee faithful ever:
Honor, glory, praise be Thine!
Let Thy merits e’er defend us,
When we pray, let them attend us;
Speak for us that final hour,
When death robs our mouth of pow’r!

Großer Mittler, der zur Rechten
seines großen Vaters sitzt
und die Schar von seinen Knechten
in dem Reich der Gnade schützt,
den auf dem erhabnen Throne
in der königlichen Krone
alles Heer der Ewigkeit
mit verhülltem Antlitz scheut!

2 Dein Geschäft auf dieser Erden
und dein Opfer ist vollbracht;
was vollendet sollte werden,
das vollführtest du mit Macht.
das ist gänzlich ausgemacht;
da du bist für uns gestorben,
ist uns Gnad und Heil erworben,
und dein siegreich Auferstehn
läßt uns in die Freiheit gehn.

3 Nun ist dieses dein Geschäfte
in dem obern Heiligtum,
die erworbnen Segenskräfte,
durch dein Evangelium,
allen denen mitzutheilen,
die zum Thron der Gnade eilen;
nun wird uns durch deine Hand
Heil und Segen zugewandt.

4 Deines Volkes werthe Namen
trägest du auf deiner Brust,
und an den gerechten Samen
denkest du mit vieler Lust;
du vertrittst, die an dich gläuben,
daß sie dir vereinigt bleiben,
und bitt'st in des Vaters Haus,
ihnen eine Wohnung aus.

5 Doch vergißt du auch der Armen,
die der Welt gehorchen nicht,
weil dein Herz dir aus Erbarmen
über ihrem Elend bricht,
daß dein Vater ihrer schone,
daß er nicht nach Werken lohne,
daß er ändre ihren Sinn,
ach da zielt dein Bitten hin.

6 Zwar in deines Fleisches Tagen,
da die Sünden aller Welt
bit auf deinen Schultern lagen,
hast du dich vor Gott gestellt,
bald mit Seufzen, bald mit Weinen
für die Sünder zu erscheinen.
O mit welcher Niedrigkeit
batest du zur selben Zeit!

7 Aber nun wird deine Bitte
von der Allmacht unterstützt,
da in der vollkommen Hütte,
die verklärte Menschheit sitzt;
nun kannst du des Satans Klagen
majestätlich niederschlagen,
und nun macht dein redend Blut
unsre böse Sache gut.

8 Die Verdienste deiner Leiden
stellest du dem Vater dar
und machst liebreich und bescheiden
dein Verlangen offendar,
daß er wolle Kraft und Leben
deinem Volk auf Erden geben
und die Seelen zu dir ziehn,
die noch deine Freundschaft fliehn.

9 Großer Mittler, sei gepriesen
daß du in dem Heiligthum
so viel Treu an uns bewiesen,
dir sei Ehre, Dank und Ruhm.
Laß uns dein Verdienst vertreten,
wenn wir zu dem Vater beten;
sprich für uns in letzter Noth,
wenn den Mund verschließt der Tod.

Der zu des Vaters Rechten sitzt

 Here is my translation of the hymn on Christ’s office as high priest, “Der zu des Vaters Rechten sitzt” (P. F. Hiller, d. 1769) from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #142. According to Fischer, it first appears in the author’s Geistliches Liederkästlein I (Stuttgart, 1762) and is based on 1 John 2:1. It should not be confused with Hiller’s similarly named “Mein Jesus sitzt zur rechten Hand,” a longer hymn translated by Henry Mills in his Horae Germanicae as “Our Jesus Now at God’s Right Hand.” The appointed melody is “Was Gott thut das ist wohlgethan.”

HE who sits on the Father’s right,
He for His own imploreth;
Thus they from wrath are sheltered quite
And soothed when sorrow poureth,
And from all need
And fear are freed,
And after death forever
Made heirs with Christ their Savior.

2 Lord Christ, the right is Thine alone
To be our intercessor;
Thou Priest before the sacred throne
Canst act for the transgressor;
No other blood
Hath ever flowed
To be our saving off’ring—
’Twas shed but in Thy suff’ring.

3 Therefore, O Righteous One, Thou art
Th’ Atonement with the Father;
Sin staineth every human heart
But Thine, God-Man, our Brother!
Thou art the Son,
Thou hast the throne
And in Thy name all-holy,
The promise resteth solely.

4 We honor Thee, we trust in Thee;
Thy people whom Thou gainedst
Sing Hallelujah! joyfully,
For Thou our death sustainedst.
Upon this ground
Let ever sound
For us Thy pray’rs and sighing,
E’en in the hour of dying!

Der zu des Vaters Rechten sitzt,
der bittet für die Seinen:
so sind sie vor dem Zorn beschützt,
getröstet in dem Weinen,
befreit von Noth,
erlöst vom Tod,
und dürfen nach dem Sterben
mit ihrem Heiland erben.

2 Herr Jesu, dir gebührt der Ruhm,
nur du kannst für uns beten;
du Priester in dem Heiligthum,
du kannst dein Volk vertreten;
kein anders Blut
ist uns zugut
zum Opfer je geflossen,
du hast's für uns vergossen.

3 Daher du die Versöhnung bist
beim Vater, der Gerechte;
da, was sonst Mensch heißt, Sünder ist,
und Engel deine Knechte;
du bist der Sohn,
du hast den Thron,
und nur in deinem Namen
ist die Verheißung Amen.

4 Wir ehren dich, wir glauben dir;
dein Volk, das du erworben,
jauchzt dir ein Hallelujah für,
weil du für uns gestorben.
Ach bitte du
nur immerzu
für uns aus diesem Grunde,
auch in der Todesstunde.

Prophete Jesu, du bist groß

Here is my translation of the hymn on Christ’s prophetic office, “Prophete Jesu, du bist groß” (Anonymous, 18th c.?), included in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch in a 9 stanza cento, omitting stanzas 7–8. Addressing the 2nd Person of the Trinity, it relates, and thus praises, Jesus in His office of prophet in the estates of His humiliation and exaltation, thus fitting it for Laetare Sunday and Exaudi. The origin of this cento before the Pennsylvania hymnal is obscure, as are other details about the hymn. It existed with both minor and major alterations, the latter form (e.g. in the Rostock hymnal of 1829) beginning “Groß bist du, Jesu, also Prophet.” The Pennsylvania, and thus Wisconsin, hymnals have an 18th c. source. The earliest instance available to the translator is the Hanover hymnal of 1745. The appointed melody is “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.”

O Jesus, Prophet, Thou art great
In action and oration!
The Father’s bosom is Thy seat,
Yet, for the world’s salvation,
Thou didst present Thyself to all
A mighty Teacher, with the call
To be our Mediator.

2 Of Christ all prophets testified,
And so Thine office showeth
That what to us was prophesied
The world in Thee now knoweth,
For Thou art called a Teacher true,
A Master, and a Shepherd too,
And of our souls the Bishop.

3 This wast Thou in these latter days
When by the Father’s stirring,
Thou camest to our sin-wrought maze
To teach the lost and erring
How we should walk and live toward heav’n,
Thou wast all pow’r and Spirit giv’n,
And marked with oil of gladness.

4 As Shepherd Thou wast chiefly sent
To Isr’el’s House decaying,
To teach the lost sheep to repent,
And to return from straying;
There too Thy heart was faithful shown,
As at Thy Baptism God made known:
“This is My Son. Oh, hear Him!”

5 The wretched, broken, and contrite,
The captive, bound, and grieving,
Who nonetheless in God aright
As Christians are believing,
Refreshment, healing find in Thee,
Relief, release, and liberty,
The year of grace, and gladness.

6 Thy Gospel, grace and truth which brought,
Thou gav’st to spirits weary,
To gladden those who long were taught
By Moses’ preaching dreary;
Yet didst Thou also high uphold
God’s will, which in the Law is told,
Faith and repentance teaching.

7 And when the pow’r Thy Word possessed
By wonders was attended,
Thou by the crowds wast praised and blest,
For all Thy works that mended
The blind and deaf and lame, and those
In leprosy or demon’s throes—
Yea, those whom death had taken.

8 This office Thou hast still maintained
E’en in Thine exaltation,
Through Thine apostles’ voice unstained,
Who at Thine instigation
Were sent out into every land
When Thou up to the Father’s hand
In glory wast ascended.]

9 Thine office dost Thou still fulfill,
Thy prophets to us sending;
Praise God! This rock stands firm until
The world shall reach its ending.
The faithful teacher’s pure lips tell
That Thou all teachers dost excel:
The way to God Thou teachest!

10 My Jesus! Yes, Thou art alone
The long-awaited Savior,
Through whom God opted to make known
To us His light of favor.
Our Surety and Shepherd good,
Who leads the soul to heav’nly food
With gentle staff and easy.

11 O Lord, then lead and guide Thou me
To pastures of salvation,
Let Thy Word ever mightily
Be my heart’s consolation;
And when the world shall pass away
O Prophet, in that blessed day
Fulfill what Thou hast promised.

1 Prophete Jesu! du bist groß [Groß bist du Jesu, als Prophet]
von Worten und von Thaten.
Dein Sitz ist deines Vaters Schooß: [Dein Thron]
jedoch, der Welt zu rathen,
hast du dich selber dieser Welt
als einen Lehrer dargestellt
in deinem Mittleramte.

2 Wie die Propheten allesammt
von Christo Zeugniß gaben; [Von dir das]
so zeiget dein Prophetenamt,
daß wir an dir nun haben,
was uns von dir versprochen wird.

4 Vornehmlich warst du Hirt gesandt [Du suchtest, o Immanuel!]

Erquickung, Heilung, Linderung,
Eröffnung und Erledigung, [Befreiung und]
ein gnädigs Jahr und Freude.

6 In deinem Evangelio, [Mit deinem]

so rühmte man, was du vollbracht [So mancher Kranke wart erfreut]

10 Mein Jesu! ja du bist allein [Ja, Jesu, du bist in der That]
das Heil, das kommen sollte;
durch den Gott seinen Gnadenschein [und den uns Gott nach seinem Rath]
uns offenbaren wollte. [zum Segen schenken…]
Der Mittler und der Seelen Hirt, [Seelenhirt]
von dem mein Geist geweidet wird
mit Stäben sanft und wehe. [mit süßen Lebensworten.]

11 So leite denn, und führe mich
auf eine grünen Weide!
Dein Wort sei immer kräftiglich
des Herzens Trost und Freude.
Und wenn die Welt einmal vergeht,
ach! so erfülle, mein Prophet!
was du hier prophezeiet.

Großer Prophete: mein Herze begehret

Here is my translation of the hymn on Christ’s threefold office, “Großer Prophete, mein Herze begehret” (Joachim Neander, 1679), appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #140. It originates in the author’s Glaub- und Liebes-Übung (1679) and, according to Julian, was translated into English by J. C. Jacobi as “Heavenly Prophet, My Heart Is Desiring” in 1720, though the full translation remains elusive at present. The hymn, dactylic in meter (11.10.11.10.11.11) is alternately appointed to be sung to its “proper melody” or to “Jesu, hilf siegen, du Fürste des Lebens” (the second below, in a simplified form used more recently).

PROPHET unequaled, my heart with great yearning
Longs with Thy learning instructed to be;
Leaving the Father, Thou, unto us turning,
Hast shown the means to communion with Thee;
As Mediator, the foe Thou o’ercamest;
Trampling his head, Thou the victory claimest.

2 Priest for eternity, fervently, solely
All of my thinking is centered on Thee;
Bring Thou my sighs to the sanctum most holy,
Who wast the Sacrifice offered for me!
By Thee as Advocate, highly ascended,
Thy own possession shall e’er be defended!

3 King of all glory, our voices adore Thee;
Strings of love’s ardor, be joined in our song!
Sounding thanksgiving and praises before Thee,
We know ourselves as Thy dearly-bought throng.
Govern us, Monarch, most loveworthy Savior!
Friend of mankind, guard and keep Thy flock ever!

4 Therefore let all that is in me be sounding,
I too, a Christian, would join them on high;
From love, unwearied, Thy praises propounding,
I’d gladly add to the jubilant cry;
Captain of Life! I will praise and revere Thee;
O Lord, let all that hath breath ever fear Thee!

Großer Prophete: mein Herze begehret
von dir inwendig gelehret zu seyn.
Du, aus des Vaters Schoß zu uns gekehret,
hast offenbaret, wie du und ich Ein;
du hast als Mittler, den Teufel, bezwungen,
dir ist das Schlangenkopftreten gelungen.

2 Priester in Ewigkeit: meine Gedanken
denken mit brennendem Eiser an dich;
bringe mein Seufzen in heilige Schranken,
der du ein Opfer geworden für mich;
du bist, als Fürsprach zum Himmel gefahren,
kannst auch dein Eigenthum ewig bewahren.

3 König der Ehren: dich wollen wir ehren;
stimmet ihr Saiten der Liebe, mit ein,
lasset das Loben und Danken nun hören,
weil wir die theuer Erkaufeten sein.
Herrsche, liebwürdigster Heiland, als König;
Menschenfreund, schütze die Deinem, die wenig.

4 Nun dann, so soll auch mein Alles erklingen,
ich, als ein Christe, will treten herbei,
will unermüdet aus Liebe dir singen;
freudig vermehren das Jubelgeschrei;
ich will dich, Herzog des Lebens, verehren:
alles was Odem hat, lobe den Herren!
