Was Gott verlobt Abraham hätt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Was Gott verlobt Abraham hätt” (N. Herman, 1560), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia…, for the feast of St. Lawrence. Herman is the only notable Lutheran church-year hymnodist in my collection who wrote a hymn for the occasion (on the Gospel or otherwise) in addition to regular Sundays and major feasts. This one is titled: “Gospel on the day of the holy martyr Laurence,” based on the Gospel, John 12:24-26.

Mel.: Es seind doch selig alle die.

TO Abraham God promisèd,

(As Moses in his first book said)

That through his seed the blessing

In Jesus Christ, the Righteous One,

Would bless all fam’lies, sire and son,

From Adam’s line progressing.

He faithfully this word fulfilled

When Christ to be incarnate willed,

And pagans, then appearing,

God’s people, temple,_and city saw

Drawn by the Spirit’s light with awe,

When Jesus’ death was nearing.

2 There were, among those who had come

Up to the feast in Salem, some

Who hailed from Greece’s nation,

That they as guests of Jesus there

Might in the paschal worship share,

And as if one legation

They came to Philip, which was he

Who had come down from Galilee,

From Bethsaida deriving.

The same desired him, saying, Sir,

We gladly have come hither far,

From foreign coasts arriving.

3 We gladly would (for so we came)

See Jesus, who the Christ they name,

’Tis Him we are desiring.

St. Philip coming, tidings brings,

And telleth Andrew of these things,

And they the news conveying,

Tell Jesus in that very place,

The Lord responds with truth and grace

and saith: “Now is the hour,

That I, the Son of Man, should be

To glory brought, and saints should see

Salvation wrought with power.

4 Amen, Amen, I tell you all,

Except a corn of wheat shall fall

And in the ground be dying—

Yea, e’en a corn of wheat so pure,

It doth abide alone for sure,

No goodly fruit supplying.

But if it die within the ground,

In maketh much fruit to abound.

And he his life who loveth,

the same shall lose it shortly here,

If worldly pow’r he doth fear,

And My demise approveth.

5 But whosoever hates his life

In this world, through all woe and strife

His life as forfeit bearing—

The same shall keep it verily.

Let him who would my servant be

My cross and way be sharing.

And where I am, there shall My true

Believing servant prosper too,

Who counteth Me his brother,

And whosoever serves Me here—

Man, wife, lord, servant—shall be dear

And honored by My Father.

Was Gott verlobt Abraham hätt,

wie im ersten Buch Mosis steht,

daß er in seinem Samen

in Jesu Christo, der Gerecht,

wollt segnen aller Welt Geschlecht,

all die von Adam kamen.

Dasselb hat er treulich geleist,

da Christus Mensch wart allermeist,

da kamen auch viel Heiden

zu Gottes Volk, KIrchen und Stadt,

die Gottes Geist erleuchtet hat,

da Christus jetzt sollt leiden.

2 Es waren etlich griechisch Leut,

aus denen, die da kammen weit

hinauf gen Salem waren,

daß sie anbetteen als Gäst

des Herren, auf das Osterfest,

samt anderen der Scharen.

Die traten zu Philiippo dar,

der dann ein Galiläer war,

von Bethsaida dorten,

sie baten ihn, und sprachen: Herr,

wir wollten gern, die kommen ferr,

seind heraus fremden Orten.

3 Wir wollten gern sehen zuhand

den, der da ist Christus genannt,

nachdem wir dann auch fragen:

Sankt Philipp kommt, tritt auf den Plan,

und sagt es dem Andrää an,

die beid es weiter sagen

dem HErren Jesu an dem ORt,

der Herr Jesus der gibt ANtwort,

und spricht: Die Zeit ist kommen,

daß werd verklärt des Menschen Sohn,

sein Herrlichkeit sich nahet nun,

und das Heil aller Frommen.

4 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch,

wo nicht fällt in die Erden weich

das Weizenkörnlein reine,

wo es nicht im Acker erstirbt,

bleibt es allein, und da verdirbt,

gibt kein Frucht ingemeine.

und will mich übergeben.

5 Wer hasset in dem Gegentheil

sein Leben und dasselbig Feil

auf dieser Welt thut tragen,

derselbig es erhalten wird.

Wer dienen will mir wie gebührt,

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Daß Jesus wahr Messias sei” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Judica, with title: “Of Christ Jesus, the true Messiah.”

Mel.:
Christe, der du bist Tag und Licht.

THAT Christ is the Messiah blest

He doth by fourfold means attest.

While Jews received Him not in faith,

To comfort us these words He saith:

2 What man convinceth Me of sin?

No man to judge Me can begin.

Thus Christ defies His enemy

Yea, though they men or devils be.

3 Next is His truth, without all fraud,

Whoever heareth is of God,

And truly never death shall see,

But pass to life eternally.

4 He speaks of Abraham as well,

The ancient church’s faith to tell,

The day of Christ the promised Seed

Did gladden Abraham indeed.

5 At last He of His age doth say

That He preceded Abr’ham’s day,

And record bears that He is God:

To Him for all be praise and laud!

GERMAN

Daß Jesus wahr Messias sei

beweiset er mit viererlei:

Die Juden solches gläuben nicht,

uns ist es tröstlich, daß er spricht:

2 Welcher ist, der beweisen kann,

daß ich jemals hab Sünd gethan?

Hiermit trotzt der Herr alle Feind,

so Menschen oder Teufel sein.

3 Das ander ist die Wahrheit rein,

wer die hört, ist mit Gott daheim:

Wahrlich, er soll den Tod nicht sehn,

sondern ins ewig Leben gehn.

4 Des Abrahams er auch gedenkt,

der alten Kirchen Glauben rühmt:

Auf des verheißnen Samens Zeit

hat sich der Abraham gefreut.

5 Zuletzt von seinem Alter sagt,

mehr denn der Abraham betagt:

Das ist seiner Gottheit Beweis:

Ihm sei für alles Ehr und Preis. Amen.

Das Wort, die göttliche Weisheit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das Wort, die göttliche Weisheit” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for Christmas Day (II). Gesius 1605 gives it with the same melody as the foregoing hymn on Luke 2, “Von Himmel hoch” (though for the “Kaiser Augustus…” we have opted for the proper melody).

Mel.: Von Himmel hoch da komm ich her.

THE Word, God’s Wisdom all divine,
Whom neither time nor space confine,
Was at the first with God in bliss,
Yea, was Himself true God, and is.

2 All things in heav’n, the earth, and sea
Through this same Word were made to be;
Without this Word was nothing wrought;
Should it depart, all else were naught.

3 And in this Word the Life we find,
Which is the Light of all mankind;
In darkness shines the Light with force,
And darkness cannot stay its course.

4 There was a man sent forth from God,
That so that Light might shine abroad,
Thus John bore witness of that Light,
But he was not that Light so bright.

5 That Light doth light to all men give,
Yet few that blessed Light receive,
Although the world through Light was wrought,
Yet little ’tis by worldlings sought.

6 That Light to His own people came,
But was not welcomed by the same;
Those who in His name’s pow’r believed
The right of sons of God received.

7 No will of man, of flesh and blood,
Can bring us to this heav’nly good;
Alone God’s washing and rebirth
Makes sons of God from men on earth.

8 By God’s eternal counsel came
That Word, and took a fleshly frame,
And we His human form have seen,
And godly majesty therein.

9 Thus wholly certified are we,
The very Son of God is He;
All grace and truth He doth possess,
And gives us grace and blessedness.

GERMAN

Das Wort, die göttliche Weisheit
im Anfang war in Ewigkeit,
bei Gott das Wort was immerdar,
ja wahrer Gott es selber war.

2 Alle Ding sind durchs Wortes Kraft
im Himmel, Erd und Meer gemacht,
ohn das Wort mag auch nichts bestehn,
thets Wort, es müßt alls untergehn.

3 In diesem Wort das Leben war,
welchs ist der Menschen Licht so klar,
im Finsternis scheinet das Licht,
die Finsternis begriffens nicht.

4 Es ward ein Mensch von Gott gesandt,
daß durch ihn das Licht würd erkannt,
Johannes soll zeugen vom Licht,
aber er war es selber nicht.

5 Das Lichts erleuchtet jedermann,
doch wenig das Licht nahmen an,
wiewohl die Welt durchs Licht gemacht,
doch sie des Lichts gar wenig acht.

6 Zu seinem eigen Volk er kam,
aber sein Volk ihn nicht annahm,
zu Kindern Gottes er da macht,
die glaubten in seins Namens Kraft.

7 Keins Mannes willen Fleisch und blut
kann uns fürdern zu solchem Gut,
aus Gott, aufs neu geboren sein,
allein macht Gottes Kinderlein.

8 Das Wort nach Gottes ewgen Rath,
das Fleisch an sich genommen hat,
wir han gesehn sein menschlich Gstalt,
und darinn sein göttlich Gewalt.

9 Drum sind wir des nun gar gewiß,
daß er wahrer Sohn Gottes ist,
voller Gnad und voller Wahrheit,
der uns gibt Gnad und Seligkeit.

Meines Jesu Angesicht

Here is my translation of the hymn “Meines Jesu Angesicht” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for the feast of St. Thomas, which this year (2025), falling on Advent IV, is observed on the 22nd of December. The hymn has particularly in mind the words of the Gospel from John 20, “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed,” as well as those of 1 Peter 1:8f., “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.”

Mel.: Christus, der uns selig macht.

MAY I not my Jesus’ face
Here behold in wonder,
Nor be granted such a grace
Till I see Him yonder,
Yet we need have no distress,
Who by Him are claimèd!
Naught can harm our blessedness
Nor leave us ashamèd.

2 Jesus, blessed shall I be
Trusting Thee, my Savior,
And made pure by faith in Thee,
Standing steadfast ever!
Help me curb my flesh and blood
And my carnal reason!
In Thy Spirit’s pow’r, O God,
Put to naught their treason.

3 Grant to feeble faith Thy might,
That by Thee sustainèd,
I more valiantly may fight
Till the vict’ry’s gainèd.
Give me by Thy hand in death
Grace and consolation,
And at last the end of faith,
E’en my soul’s salvation!

GERMAN

Meines Jesu Angesicht
hab ich nie gesehen.
Hier auf Erden wirds auch nicht,
sondern dort geschehen.
Aber das kann mittlerzeit
mir und Gottes Kindern
nichts an unser Seligkeit
schaden oder hindern.

2 Jesu, selig werd ich sein,
weil ich an dich gläube,
auch durch dich im Glauben rein
und beständig bleibe!
Hilf mir, daß ich Fleisch und Blut
und Vernunft bezähme,
und in Geistes Kraft und Muth
sie gefangen nehme.

3 Gieb mir Stärke, wenn ich mich
schwach am Glauben finde,
daß ich kämpfe ritterlich
bis ich überwinde.
Reiche du mir allezeit
deine Gnadenhände,
daß der Seelen Seligkeit
sei des Glaubens Ende.

Dieses ist der Christen Siegel

Here is my translation of the hymn “Dieses ist der Christen Siegel” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for the feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles (Oct. 28), Gospel of John 15:17–21 (22–25). The last line is used by Neumeister in a libretto, in Telemann’s “Alle, die gottselig,” TVWV 1:49, for the Sunday after New Year.

Mel.: Ach was soll ich Sünder machen.

’TIS all Christians’ seal assuring
That They here the cross must bear.
Christ, the Father’s Son and Heir,
Is the Mirror never-erring;
Whoso then God’s child would be,
Let him yield him patiently!

2 ’Tis all Christians’ spring of gladness
When the world would work despair,
God’s own sun of grace is there,
Smiling in the greatest sadness;
Yea, the more men press them sore,
Jesus loves them still the more.

3 ’Tis all Christians’ boon and blessing,
When they lie beneath the rod,
For it is the will of God
Thus to deal love’s blows caressing,
Whence there springs the Spirit’s fruit
From good discipline’s pursuit.

4
’Tis all Christians’ life supernal:
When this passing age is done,
They will have from God the Son
There in heav’n His glory_eternal.
Oh, then cry through Christendom:
Come, thou dearest cross, oh, come!

GERMAN

Dieses ist der Christen Siegel,
daß sie Kreuzesträger sind.
Jesus, Gottes liebstes Kind,
ist hierinnen selbst der Spiegel.
Wer nun Gottes Kind will sein,
gebe sich geduldig drein.

2 Dieses ist der Christen Freude,
wenn die Welt sie traurig macht.
Gottes Gnadensonne lacht,
ihnen auch im größten Leide.
Ja, je mehr die Welt betrübt,
desto mehr sie Jesus liebt.

3 Dieses ist der Christen Segen,
wenn sie unter Ruthen sind.
Denn der treue Vater bindt
sie zu lauter Liebesschlägen.
Und da folgt des Geistes Frucht
auf dergleichen gute Zucht.

4 Dieses ist der Christen Leben:
Christus wird nach dieser Zeit,
ihnen seine Herrlichkeit
in dem Himmel ewig geben.
Ei, so sprechete allerseits:
komm nur her, du liebes Kreuz!

O Seele, laß des Geistes Schwert

Here is my translation of the Baptismal Life hymn, “O Seele, laß des Geistes Schwert” (L. Laurentii, 1700), given as the second hymn for the Feast of the Holy Trinity in the author’s Evangelia Melodica.

Mel.: Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.

SOUL, suffer now the Spirit’s Sword
To strike thee down with power,
And hear the teaching of the Lord
With rev’rent fear this hour:
Thy own salvation, soul, embrace!
Take heed of this brief time of grace,
Lest thou forever perish.

2 Thou first must undergo new birth
By water and the Spirit,
Ere thou canst be God’s son on earth
And heaven here inherit.
The old man must be drowned within
That so the new man may be seen
According to God’s counsel.

3 Examine well thy heart and see
If Adam in thee liveth,
And in sin’s passions vig’rously
Against the Spirit striveth.
If it be so, he, living yet,
Must be by cross and yoke beset
Until he dies completely.

4 If reason cannot understand,
Then let it still be lying;
Faith knows what work is here at hand
When fruit is multiplying.
The wind blows how and where it will;
Then to God’s Spirit be thou still
And bear this mortifying.

5 The clay fights not the hands and feet
Of him the pot who maketh;
Then bear it now. God will make sweet
Pains with which thy heart acheth;
When God’s true image, man, in thee
In new and active life comes forth,
Then is the pain forgotten.

6 O holy birth through Jesus’ death,
Which God the Spirit doeth,
Who daily in the pow’r of faith
New birth on us bestoweth,
Till in the faith’s true unity
A perfect man we come to be,
Like Christ’s full-measured stature.

7 This life for us Thou hast alone,
O Jesus, here obtainèd,
When, having suff’ring undergone,
Thou hast our death sustainèd.
For as the serpent lifted was
By Moses’ hand, so Thou for us
Wast lifted in Thy dying.

8 Yea, therefore was the Son of Man
Upon the cross uplifted,
That He might lift th’ infernal ban
And we in sin who drifted,
Might, as His holy order made,
Be with His righteousness arrayed,
By which we have salvation.

9 O Jesus, ready us, we pray,
And break the heart sin-hardened,
That in this time of grace we may
By sorr’wing faith be pardoned,
And trusting God, be born again.
Then make us wholly free from sin
At last in heav’nly gladness.

10 I long for naught more eagerly
Than purging from transgression,
And since my longing pleases Thee,
Thou wilt my heart’s oppression
Relieve, and lift its burden dread,
That this my soul may lift its head
And with rejoicing thank Thee.

GERMAN

1 O Seele, laß des Geistes Schwert
Dich kräftig niederschlagen
Und höre, was dein Jesus lehrt
Mit herzlichem Behagen.
Es gilt hier Seel und Seligkeit,
Drum nimm in Acht die Gnadenzeit,
Daß du nicht wirst verloren.

2 Du mußt aus Wasser und dem Geist
Erst neu geboren werden,
Eh du ein Kind des Höchsten heißt
Und Himmels Erb auf Erden.
Der alte Mensch muß untergehn,
Daß sich der neue lasse sehn,
Nach Gottes Rath und Willen.

3 Geh in dein Herz und forsche dich,
Ob Adam in dir lebet.
Und in den Lüsten kräftiglich
Dem Geiste widerstrebet.
Geschiehet dies, so lebt er noch,
Drum muß er unter Kreuz und Joch,
Bis er getötet werde.

4 Faßt die Vernunft die Sache nicht,
So laß sie stille schweigen,
Der Glaube weiß, was hier geschicht,
Drum halte Gottes Geist nur still
Und leide dieses Töten.

5 Es widersetzt sich nicht der Ton
Des Töpfers Händ und Füßen,
Drum leide dich, es wird dir schon
Die Schmerzen all versüßen.
Wenn Gottes Bild, o Mensch, in dir,
Zum neuen Leben geht herfür,
So ist der Schmerz vergessen.

6 O heilige Geburt und Werk,
Das Gottes Geist ausführet,
Der in des Glaubens Kraft und Stärk
Uns täglich neu gebieret.
Bis wir im Glauben wachsen an
Zu einem vollenkommnen Mann,
Dem Alter Christi ähnlich.

7 Dies Leben hast du ganz allein,
O Jesu, uns erworben,
Da du nach ausgestandner Pein,
Am Kreuz für uns gestorben.
Denn wie die Schlange ward erhöht
Von Mose, wie geschrieben steht,
So bist du auch erhoben.

8 Ja darum ist des Menschen Sohn
Am Kreuz erhoben worden,
Daß wir durch ihn zum Himmelsthron
In seinem heilgen Orden
Erhoben, noch in dieser Zeit
Erlangten die Gerechtigkeit,
Die uns kann selig machen.

9 O Jesu, mach uns wohl bereit
Und brich die harten Herzen,
Daß wir noch in der Gnadenzeit
In Glaubensreu und -schmerzen,
Aus Gott geboren werden neu
Und mach uns endlich gänzlich frei
Im Himmel von der Sünde.

10 Ich wünsche nichts auf dieser Welt,
Als Reinigung von Sünden
Und weil mein Wunsch dir wohl gefällt,
So wirst du mich entbinden
Der Last, die mich im Herzen drückt,
Damit die Seele werd erquickt
Und dir mit Freuden danke.

Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt

Here is my translation of the Pentecost text, “Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt” (E. Neumeister, d. 1756), from the author’s libretto for Whit Monday, which begins his own chorale: “Also hat Gott die Welt geliebet, daß er sein eingebornes Kind” which I have already translated as “God loved the world so, that He gave it…” and which was set at least by Telemann. The present text, probably originally devised as an aria, has the meter 899.99.88 (ABBCCAA), each stanza beginning and ending with the same line or refrain. Robin D. Fish has kindly produced his own excellent melody to enable this text to be used as a hymn.

Mel. Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt

SUCH love did God for man conceive,
His only Son endured the Passion
To gain for all mankind salvation—
Salvation that, for their transgression
By which they were made death’s possession,
They by their pow’r could ne’er achieve:
Such love did God for man conceive.

2 Such love did God for man conceive,
His Son all souls’ corruption cureth,
And on us sinful men conferreth
New birth by water and the Spirit,
That every child may life inherit
If he this promise but believe:
Such love did God for man conceive.

3 Such love did God for man conceive!
And this love standeth firm forever;
As God’s own mount it shall not waver.
No error false can ever take it
The Spirit, given us to seal it,
Makes us more strongly to believe:
Such love did God for man conceive.

4 Such love did God for man conceive!
What from this love shall part us ever?
O all who trust in Christ the Savior
Shall to damnation ne’er be flying,
But live, though here they must be dying;
For God eternal life doth give.
Such love did God for man conceive!

GERMAN
Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt!
Sein eingeborner Sohn muß sterben,
das Heil den Menschen zu erwerben;

Here is my translation of the Whitsunday hymn “Wer mich lieb hat, mein Wort der hält” (N. Herman, 1561), on the Gospel of John 14 from his Sonntags-Evangelia. Suggested melodies are 1. 4. Christe der du bist Tag und Licht. Since I used the first suggested tune for Exaudi, I give the second here, noting nevertheless that Herman leaves the selection free. (Added 22 May, 2026: The tune “Spiritus sancti gratia”)

Mel.: Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein Gunst.

Or: Spiritus sancti gratia.

“WHO loves Me, keeps My sayings true,
And him My Father loveth too;
We unto him will also come
And make in him Our house and home.

2 “Who loves Me not, he doth decline
To keep My Word, which is not Mine,
But rather ’tis My Father’s Word,
And His who sent Me,” saith the Lord:

3 “These things I’ve spoken unto you
While yet I present am with you;
That ye may grasp them and recall,
The Comfortor shall teach you all.

4 “Him will the Father in My name
Send down, to speak to you the same,
And all the words ye hear Me preach
He will remind, expound, and teach.

5 “My peace I leave and give to you,
And give not as the world would do,
So let your heart not troubled be,
Be not afraid, act fearlessly.

6 “For although now I go away,
Yet will I come again one day,
If Me ye loved, ye joy would know,
Because I to My Father go.

7 “My Father greater is than I,
Therefore these things I specify,
That when these things ye shall perceive
To come to pass, ye might believe.

8 “I will not talk much with you hence,
For now approaches this world’s prince,
With pomp and warlike company,
But he no portion hath in Me.

9 “But that the world may know that I
Do what must please My Father high
And what He duly hath decreed,
My love I demonstrate in deed.”

drum sag ichs euch so eigentlich,
auf das, wenn kommt die selber Stund,
ihr solchs, wenns geschicht, glauben künnt.

8 Forthin werd ich mit euch nit mehr
viel reden, denn es kommt daher
der Fürst der Welt mit seim Panier,
aber er hat kein Theil an mir.

9 Auf daß erkennen kann die Welt,
daß ich thu, was meim Vater gfällt,
und was er mir befohlen hat,
mein Lieb beweis ich mit der That.
