Das Wort, die göttliche Weisheit

 Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das Wort, die göttliche Weisheit” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for Christmas Day (II). Gesius 1605 gives it with the same melody as the foregoing hymn on Luke 2, “Von Himmel hoch” (though for the “Kaiser Augustus…” we have opted for the proper melody).

THE Word, God’s Wisdom all divine,
Whom neither time nor space confine,
Was at the first with God in bliss,
Yea, was Himself true God, and is.

2 All things in heav’n, the earth, and sea
Through this same Word were made to be;
Without this Word was nothing wrought;
Should it depart, all else were naught.

3 And in this Word the Life we find,
Which is the Light of all mankind;
In darkness shines the Light with force,
And darkness cannot stay its course.

4 There was a man sent forth from God,
That so that Light might shine abroad,
Thus John bore witness of that Light,
But he was not that Light so bright.

5 That Light doth light to all men give,
Yet few that blessed Light receive,
Although the world through Light was wrought,
Yet little ’tis by worldlings sought.

6 That Light to His own people came,
But was not welcomed by the same;
Those who in His name’s pow’r believed
The right of sons of God received.

7 No will of man, of flesh and blood,
Can bring us to this heav’nly good;
Alone God’s washing and rebirth
Makes sons of God from men on earth.

8 By God’s eternal counsel came
That Word, and took a fleshly frame,
And we His human form have seen,
And godly majesty therein.

9 Thus wholly certified are we,
The very Son of God is He;
All grace and truth He doth possess,
And gives us grace and blessedness.

Das Wort, die göttliche Weisheit
im Anfang war in Ewigkeit,
bei Gott das Wort was immerdar,
ja wahrer Gott es selber war.

2 Alle Ding sind durchs Wortes Kraft
im Himmel, Erd und Meer gemacht,
ohn das Wort mag auch nichts bestehn,
thets Wort, es müßt alls untergehn.

3 In diesem Wort das Leben war,
welchs ist der Menschen Licht so klar,
im Finsternis scheinet das Licht,
die Finsternis begriffens nicht.

4 Es ward ein Mensch von Gott gesandt,
daß durch ihn das Licht würd erkannt,
Johannes soll zeugen vom Licht,
aber er war es selber nicht.

5 Das Lichts erleuchtet jedermann,
doch wenig das Licht nahmen an,
wiewohl die Welt durchs Licht gemacht,
doch sie des Lichts gar wenig acht.

6 Zu seinem eigen Volk er kam,
aber sein Volk ihn nicht annahm,
zu Kindern Gottes er da macht,
die glaubten in seins Namens Kraft.

7 Keins Mannes willen Fleisch und blut
kann uns fürdern zu solchem Gut,
aus Gott, aufs neu geboren sein,
allein macht Gottes Kinderlein.

8 Das Wort nach Gottes ewgen Rath,
das Fleisch an sich genommen hat,
wir han gesehn sein menschlich Gstalt,
und darinn sein göttlich Gewalt.

9 Drum sind wir des nun gar gewiß,
daß er wahrer Sohn Gottes ist,
voller Gnad und voller Wahrheit,
der uns gibt Gnad und Seligkeit.
