Meines Jesu Angesicht

Here is my translation of the hymn “Meines Jesu Angesicht” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for the feast of St. Thomas, which this year (2025), falling on Advent IV, is observed on the 22nd of December. The hymn has particularly in mind the words of the Gospel from John 20, “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed,” as well as those of 1 Peter 1:8f., “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.”

MAY I not my Jesus’ face
Here behold in wonder,
Nor be granted such a grace
Till I see Him yonder,
Yet I need have no distress,
Who by Him are claimèd!
Naught can harm our blessedness
Nor leave us ashamèd.

2 Jesus, blessed shall I be
Trusting Thee, my Savior,
And made pure by faith in Thee,
Standing steadfast ever!
Help me curb my flesh and blood
And my carnal reason!
In Thy Spirit’s pow’r, O God,
Put to naught their treason.

3 Grant to feeble faith Thy might,
That by Thee sustainèd,
I more valiantly may fight
Till the vict’ry’s gainèd.
Give me by Thy hand in death
Grace and consolation,
And at last the end of faith,
E’en my soul’s salvation!

Meines Jesu Angesicht
hab ich nie gesehen.
Hier auf Erden wirds auch nicht,
sondern dort geschehen.
Aber das kann mittlerzeit
mir und Gottes Kindern
nichts an unser Seligkeit
schaden oder hindern.

2 Jesu, selig werd ich sein,
weil ich an dich gläube,
auch durch dich im Glauben rein
und beständig bleibe!
Hilf mir, daß ich Fleisch und Blut
und Vernunft bezähme,
und in Geistes Kraft und Muth
sie gefangen nehme.

3 Gieb mir Stärke, wenn ich mich
schwach am Glauben finde,
daß ich kämpfe ritterlich
bis ich überwinde.
Reiche du mir allezeit
deine Gnadenhände,
daß der Seelen Seligkeit
sei des Glaubens Ende.
