Mein Seel erhebt den Herren mein

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mein Seel erhebt den Herren mein” (S. Pollio, 1525), a metrical paraphrase of the Magnificat appearing in the early Strassburg Kirchenamt. The proper melody from the same Kirchenamt, probably composed by Matthias Greitter, which was evidently widespread and is given here from Zahn.

Mel.: Mein Seel erhebt den Herren mein.

MY soul doth magnify my Lord,
 My spirit gladly springeth,
 My Savior praises to afford!
 (So holy Mary singeth)
 He grace did show / His handmaid low,
 With favor did address me,
 Fulfilled in me / His great decree,
 And every age shall bless me!

2 ’Tis He whose name is sanctified
 And filleth with His blessing,
 Those in His mercy who abide
 With faith and fear unceasing;
 The mighty stand, / but by His hand
 Their scattered host is riven;
 He putteth down / the proudest crown,
 They from their seat are driven.

3 The lowly, meek, and hungry still`
 To glory high He raiseth,
 And doth with all good bounties fill,
 And with His pow’r amazeth.
 He sends the rich / without a stitch,
 And them to sorrow leaveth,
 But what is poor / He evermore
 Abundant gladness giveth.

4 The Lord His servant Israel
 Hath holpen, and sustaineth;
 His mercy makes all things end well,
 That His good will ordaineth.
 As He of old / the fathers told
 And pledged to them His favor—
 To Abraham / and all that came
 Forth from his seed, forever!

5 To God the Father, God the Son,
 And God the Holy Spirit
 Be glory while the ages run;
 May we His grace inherit
 Here so to walk / and act and talk
 As honor to Him bringeth!
 Who this would have / shall so receive,
 And heartfelt Amen singeth!

Ich will des Höchsten Gütigkeit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ich will des Höchsten Gütigkeit” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, for Trinity XIV (second series).

Mel.: An Wasserflüßen Babylon.

I WILL the Most High’s mercy sing
And honor with thanksgiving;
His praises from my lips shall ring
As long as I am living.
My heart doth with my mouth agree,
Thus heart and mouth in harmony
To God I’ve consecrated;
My every pow’r, my body and soul,
I stir up, that my being whole
In Him may be elated.

2 The good that daily He bestows
Is like a countless treasure;
The faithfulness to me He shows
No man can sound or measure.
Indeed, no morning meets my face
On which the beaming of His grace
Doth not a blessing send me,
Nor doth light of day subside
Without His hand at eventide
Spread o’er me to defend me.

3 If of all worldly bounties I
May not the least be owning,
In poverty’s poor tent must lie,
On want’s poor bed be groaning;
I richer am than any lord,
Since God and His most Holy Word
I am by faith possessing.
Oh, what a treasure, what a boast!
An empire spanning coast to coast
Would pale beside this blessing.

4 I am unworthy, God, by far
For all Thy mercies shown me!
Yea, should I sing Alleluia
While yet Thou life dost loan me,
It never would suffice to fill
The debt of thanks I’d owe Thee still
For all Thy grace and merit.
Yet what in Jesus Christ is done
Thou kindly takest for my own,
And see’st my mind and spirit.

5 Samaritans at heart, arise!
Let thanks and praise be given,
And hail the Lord with joyful cries
Here and above in heaven!
Our earthly choirs to multiply,
Your shouts of praise intone on high,
Ye champions now victorious;
Yea, let all things that live and breathe
God’s mighty acts with praises wreathe
And spread His honor glorious.

6 Thanks, honor, praise, and majesty
Be given to Thee solely
In all our life, eternally,
O Triune God most Holy!
Through earthly days and evermore
Our lips shall Thee, Lord God, adore
With heart in concert ringing,
Till some day we before Thy throne
May ever in unfal’tring tone
With all the hosts be singing.

nicht das geringste hätte;
die Armuth wäre da mein Zelt,
die Dürfitgkeit mein Bette;
bin ich doch reich, ja überreich,
daß ich sein Wort und ihn zugleich
in wahrem Glauben hab.
O welch ein Schatz! O welch ein Ruhm!
Kein tausendfaches Kaiserthum
gleicht dieser Gottesgabe.

4 Ich bin ja der Barmherzigkeit,
mein Gott, viel zu geringe.
Ob ich durch alle Lebenszeit
ein Halleluja singe:
so reichts doch nimmermehr dahin,
was ich zum Danke schuldig bin
für deine große Güte.
Doch was in CHristo wird gethan,
das nimmst du wohlgefällig an,
und siehst auf das Gemüthe.

5 Auf, wer ein Samariter heißt,
im Danken und im Loben.
Der Herr Herr sei von uns gepreist,
hier und im Himmel oben!
Und daß der Chöre noch mehr sein,
so sstimmt mit vollem Jauchzen ein
auch ihr, ihr starken Helden.
Ja, was nur lebt und Odem hat,
das müsse Gottes Wunderthat
zu seinem Ruhm vermelden.

6 Dank, Ehre, Preis und Herrlichkeit
sei dir im ganzen Leben,
von einer Zeit zur andern Zeit,
dreieinger Gott, gegeben!
So lange wir auf Erden hier,
soll ein Herr Gott dich loben wir
aus Herz und MUnd erklingen;
bis wirs dereinst vor deinem Thron
auch ewig und im reinen Thon
mit allen Engeln singen.

Herr, wann mein Herz recht überdenkt

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Herr, wann mein Herz recht überdenkt” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXXXI, Domine non est, with title “A lesson that we may look only to God’s Word, wait for His help, and not build on our own godliness.” The Ionian melody by Waldis follows the Luther hymn meter, 87.87.887, and is one of the rare instances of a repetition, being used earlier in the psalter for his High-Germanification of Knöpken’s Psalm 25, “An allen Menschen gar verzagt,” though in this instance the ending seems slightly improved (here again, Zahn interprets the slurs differently). Knöpken’s psalm was first published in the appendix to Waldis’s Der Verlorene Sohn. — Heugel’s Tenor line is among those missing from his partbook (Psalms 131–144), for which, however, the other parts are extant. The Wolfenbüttel MS of Waldis’ Psalter has in the margin the handwritten note: “In the melody, ‘Nun freuet euch, lieben Christen gmein.’” And at the bottom of the page: “It can also be sung to the melody, ‘Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.’”

LORD, when my heart doth well bethink
My wretched, sinful living,
Wherein I utterly did sink,
I’m filled with deep misgiving;
I cannot rise, my eyes must fall,
I count my works as worthless all,
Of my own self despairing.

2 When I considered all my pow’r,
Appraised my gifts excelling,
Recalled my good deeds hour to hour,
My heart with pride was swelling,
Yet did my mind in doubt abide,
And could not in Thyself confide,
With anguish was I broken.

3 When I did not my soul possess
On grace for its foundation,
It was aggrieved with restlessness,
Wracked by sin’s condemnation.
When was I as a weanèd child,
That longeth for its mother mild,
And suffers none to hush it.

4 Therefore I counsel Israel:
Hope in the Lord God solely.
He will assist, and need dispel;
He giveth to the lowly.
His goodness, grace, and mercy free
Both now and for eternity
To all He will be showing.

¶ To God the Father glory be,
Who founded earth and heaven,
Made sun and moon and stars to be,
And hath us knowledge given
Of His kind will through Christ His Son;
May He sustain what Christ hath won
In us by His good Spirit!

Preis, Ehr und Lob dem höchsten Gott

Here is my translation of the doxology stanza, “Preis, Ehr und Lob dem höchsten Gott” (Anon.), in ELGB #427, first appearing, according to Fischer, in Etliche Lieder, Gepet und Psalmen (Nuremberg, ca. 1546), later with various alteration in various hymnals, e.g., Strassburg 1568, Frankfurt 1570, Keuchenthal 1573. There is interestingly no dative attributing praise to the Son specifically, though He is of course included in the general term “Gott” in the first line. In the Buffalo Synod hymnal, the stanza appears by itself with the title: “Doxology to be sung with the hymn: ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,’ and also in other instances,” such as, presumably, “O Jesu einig wahres Haupt”; also from the Wisconsin hymnal, “Mein fester Fels und starker Hort” and “Wenn Christus seine Kirche schützt.”

TO God Most High all glory be,
Our Father kind in heaven,
Who to repair our injury
In love His Son hath given:
And to the Comforter,
Who from sin makes [us]* pure,
To the kingdom draws,
And heaven’s pathway shows.
May He assist us! Amen.

*For the longer form of the meter, in line 6 the word “us” is inserted.

Preis, Ehr und Lob dem höchsten Gott,

der helf uns fröhlich, Amen.

Gott Vater, dir sei Preis (= Ehr sei Gott in der Höh)

Here is my translation of the doxological stanza, “Gott Vater, dir sei Preis” (Anon., 1657), in ELGB #426, also attached to “O Gott du frommer Gott,” the preceding hymn #425. The Buffalo Synod hymnal gives it the title “Doxology for singing in the previous hymn and also in other cases,” implying its usage with others in this meter, i.e., most notably, “Now thank we all our God.” Indeed, an early instance of this doxology (Goßlar Gsb 1682) is attached to “Nun danket alle Gott” with asterisk. In fact, it is originally 5th stanza of the Gloria in excelsis paraphrase, “Ehr sei Gott in der Höh,” an anonymous adaptation of Decius’s text to the meter of “O Gott du frommer Gott,” first appearing in the Hanover Gsb 1657, printed in Lüneburg. It received a proper melody by W. Weßnitzer in 1665. Peter Sohr’s Musicalischer Vorschmack (1683) gives that hymn a different proper melody, which he also included earlier in Praxis Pietatis Melica (1668) which he edited. However, the Gotha Gsb has it as the 9th stanza of Hermann’s hymn, and evidently comes to our hymnal from that tradition. For completeness’ sake, it seems appropriate to include here the German stanzas of the original hymn, though only the last is of concern for the Buffalo Synod hymnal.

PRAISE, God the Father, be
To Thee here and in heaven,
Lord Jesus, God the Son,
Praise e’er to Thee be given.
O God the Holy Ghost,
Praise sound forth unto Thee.
To Thee, O triune God,
Praise, laud, and glory be!

—

PRAISE be to God on high,
Thanks for His grace and favor,
For now no thing can harm
Our blessedness forever:
For now the Most High God
With good will to us bends,
With everlasting peace,
All conflict now He ends.

2 O Father, for Thy grace
Receive our due thanksgiving,
For from eternity
Thou reignest everliving,
Wholly without constraint,
Lord, is Thy wondrous powr!
What but Thy will decides
Must be the selfsame hour.

3 O Jesus Christ, the Son
Begotten of the Father,
Who hast atoned for sin,
Brought God and man together:
O Lamb of God, O Lord,
The God-Man, now give heed:
Have mercy, and receive
Our pray’r in time of need!

4 O precious Holy Ghost,
Thou Fount with comforts running,
Defend us mightily
From Satan’s craft and cunning.
Deliv’rance from all grief,
From pain and need provide,
For we are dearly bought
By Christ the Crucified.

5 Praise, God the Father, be
To Thee here and in heaven,
Lord Jesus, God the Son,
Praise e’er to Thee be given.
O God the Holy Ghost,
Praise sound forth unto Thee.
To Thee, O triune God,
Praise, laud, and glory be!

Ehr sei Gott Vater allezeit (doxology stanza)

Here is my translation of the common doxological stanza, “Ehr sei Gott Vater allezeit,” in ELGB #401, originally appearing in the Erfurt Enchiridion as the concluding stanza of “Ach, Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein! The Buffalo Synod hymnal gives it the title and rubric “The Doxology to the hymns: Aus tiefer Noth… Ach Gott vom Himmel… Es spricht der Unweisen… Wo Gott der Herr… Nun freut euch lieben…, and others.” In other words, it is for any classic chorale in the meter 87.87.887. In ELGB #402–3, two more doxological stanzas of great age are given, which, however, are already found translated in Walther’s Hymnal, nos. 11–12. Nevertheless, I include two new, alternative translations here. The second in the Buffalo Synod hymnal is indicated to be sung with “An Wasserflüssen Babylon” (as also in WH 11), while the third is an alternative doxology for the bar meter 87.87.887.

TO God the Father glory be
And Christ His Son, our Savior,
And to the Spirit equally
On heaven’s throne forever,
As ’twas before the world began,
Is now, and ever shall remain.
Amen, we pray, so be it!

Ehr sei Gott Vater allezeit,
auch Christo eingeboren,
und dem Tröster heiligem geist,
gar hoch ins Himmels-Throne,
wie es im Anfang und auch jetzt

II.

To God all praise and majesty—
The Father, Son, and Spirit—
As ’twas, and is, and e’er shall be.
May we His grace inherit,
That in this gloomy vale of tears
Where worldly wickedness appears
We may avoid it ever,
And strive in newness now to live,
For which may God His mercy give.
Amen, through Christ our Savior.
