Here is my translation of the hymn, “Nu singt alle mit dem David” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Misericordias. The melody, which seems to have vexed English translators because of the rhyme between unaccented and accented syllables in the first two lines, is often slurred on the first line, or the rhyme scheme is altered. Here I attempt to retain Helmbold’s original scheme.
Mel.: Jesus Christus unser Heiland, der den Tod.
NOW with David sing in chorus:
God the Lord keepeth us
On verdant pastures,
Saves us from all disasters.
Kyrieleison.
2 Jesus to this testifieth,
Of His sheep surely saith:
I am their caring
Good Shepherd, kind and sparing.
Kyrieleison.
3 From the wolf a hireling fle-eth;
But I abide till death,
Life and limb giving,
That My sheep may be living.

4 I know them, they know Me truly,
Like My Father and Me:
Them I so cherish,
I die, lest they should perish.

5 I, yet other sheep possessing,
In the fold them will bring,
