Jesus lebet! Jesus ist

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Jesus lebet! Jesus ist” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Easter Tuesday / Third Easter Day.

Mel.: Jesus meine Zuversicht.

 

JESUS liveth! Jesus is

Risen from the dead, undying.

Death, thou mayest scowl and hiss, [Fearsome death, thou yet art His]

But in shame thou still art lying! [And in shame must…]

Thee and all thy vaunted might 

Hath my Jesus vanquished quite!

2 Jesus liveth! Jesus reigns!

And victorious triumph keepeth!

Scatter, foes, till none remains!

For your prey to freedom leapeth.

We by Jesus mightily

Are from all our bonds set free.

3 Jesus liveth! And I too

Shall with Him be ever living.

Shall I not with gladness true

To His hands myelf be giving,

When this passing life is past

And my ending comes at last?

4 Jesus liveth! Jesus lives,

He is mine, and mine completely!

Now its limbs my body gives

To the grave to slumber sweetly.

Jesus lives, who keeps them all,

And some day to wake shall call.

5 Jesus liveth! If I should

Be this day in Jesus dying,

As life’s heir this day I would

To eternal life be flying!

Therefore, Prince of Life, I will

Wait for Thy returning still!

von den Toten auferstanden!

Tod, wie schrecklich du auch bist,

wirst du nicht zu Spott und Schanden?

Dich und alle deine Macht

hat mein Jesus umgebracht.

2 Jesus lebet! Jesus herrscht!

Jesus siegt und triumphieret!

Berstet nur, ihr Feinde, berst’t,

da ihr euren Raub verlieret.

Wir sind nun durch Jesus Kraft

frei von der Gefangenschaft.

3 Jesus lebet! und ich soll

ewig auch bei Jesu leben.

Sollt ich denn nicht freudenvoll

mich in seine Hände geben,

wenn sich dieses Leben schließt

und mein Ende kommen ist?

4 Jesus lebet! Jesus lebt!

den ich ganz zu eigen habe.

Meine Leibesglieder gebt,

gebt euch willig hin zum Grabe.

Jesus lebt, der euch bedeckt

und auch wieder auferweckt.

5 Jesus lebet! möcht ich doch

heute noch in Jesu sterben!

denn so thut ich heute noch

ewiglich das Leben erben.
