Jesus zu seinen Jüngern sprach

Here is my translation of the hymn “Jesus zu seinen Jüngern sprach” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Trinity XV, on the Gospel from Matthew 6. While Herman suggests a few standard LM meter melodies, Gesius in 1605 provides his own proper setting in four parts. I give the melody from Zahn.

TO His disciples Jesus said:
Two lords by one are not obeyed,
If each holds an opposing side;
With one alone he must abide.

2 Thus can ye not your belly serve
And God, as He doth well deserve.
Whose trust in wealth and fame is laid
Gives up his Maker for the made.

3 Therefore ye should not anxious think
What ye will have to eat or drink,
Nor with what shoes and raiment ye
Will dress your limbs, but restful be.

4 Life is far better than all meat,
And all that one may drink and eat.
Likewise the body is far more
Than raiment which the eyes adore.

5 Behold the fowls amid the air,
God gives them foods and raiment fair;
They do not reap nor gather in,
Yet food and clothes from God they win.

6 Think ye God cares for you not more?
What help is all your worry sore?
What man by worry’s anxious flight
Can add one cubit to his height?

7 Why take ye thought for raiment too?
Behold the lilies fair of hue,
Likewise the roses red that grow,
How finely God adorns them so.

8 Although they neither toil nor spin
Yet even Solomon the monarch, in
His glory, ‘mongst his treasuries,
Was not arrayed like one of these.

9 Since God the grass upon the field,
And flowers in the forest wild
Adorns and robes so gloriously,
Much more will He your clothier be.

10 Be not so faithless when ye think,
Say not: What shall we eat and drink?
Whence shall we needful raiment buy?
For these the godless heathen sigh.

11 The heav’nly Father well doth know
That He must food on all bestow;
Seek first God’s kingdom with all speed,
And to His righteousness give heed.

12 Then with these too ye shall be blest,
So set your heart at ease and rest,
About tomorrow worry not,
Today with plagues enough is fraught.

13 Each day indeed its evils hath,
Enough of worldly ills and wrath;
Vex not yourselves with cares for things;
Its own cares every morrow brings.

14 From cares of belly keep us, Lord!
To trust Thy mercy strength afford;
Help us Thy kingdom more to seek
Than goods and honor brief and weak.

Jesus zu seinen Jüngern sprach:
Niemand zwein Herren dienen mag,
zumal wenn sie parteiisch sein,
muß er bei einem stehn allein.

2 Darum vermöcht ihr nit dem Bauch
dienen, und Gott dem Herren auch.
Wer traut auf Freund, Ehr, Geld und Gut
sein Gott, der übergeben thut.

3 Derhalben ihr nicht sorgen sollt,
was ihr essen und trinken wollt,
auch wohl ihr nehmt Kleider und Schuh
für euren Leib, gebt euch zu Ruh.

4 Das Leben ja viel besser ist,
denn alles was man trinkt und ißt,
desgleich der Leib ist auch viel mehr
denn mögen sein alle Kleider.

5 Seht in der Luft die Vögel an,
wie sie Gott speist und kleiden kann,
sie ernten und sammlen nicht ein,
noch speist sie Gott, und kleidt sie fein.

6 Meint ihr, Gott sorg für euch nit mehr?
Was hülfs wenn einer sorget sehr?
Wie er ein Elln möcht länger sein,
die Sorg hilft nit, er bleibt doch klein.

7 Warum sorgt für die Kleider ihr?
Bildt euch die schönen Blumen für,
Desgleich die hübschen Röslein roth,
wie fein sie schmücket euer Gott.

8 Ob sie gleich gar kein Arbeit thon,
so hat doch König Salomon
in all seim Pracht und Herrlichkeit
nicht angehabt ihrs gleich ein Kleid.

9 Weil denn das Gras auf den Felden
und die Bäumlein in den Wälden
so herrlich schön Gott schmückt und ziert,
viel mehr er euch bekleiden wird.

10 Seid nicht so kleingläubige Leut,
sprecht nit, Was essn und trinkn wir heut?
Woher nehmen wir unser Kleid?
Nach diesem tracht der gottlos Heid.

11 Der himmlisch Vater weiß sehr wohl,
das er das alls euch geben soll,
drum nach Gotts Reich am ersten tracht
und auf sein Grechtigkeit gebt Acht.

12 So wird das alls euch fallen zu,
gebt nur eur Herz zu Fried und RUh,
sorgt ja nicht für den andern Tag,
es ist gnug an der heutign Plag.

13 Ein jeder Tag sein Unglück hat,
daran man hat zu tragen satt,
mit übriger Sorg plagt euch nit,
ein jeder Tag sein Sorg bringt mit.

14 Für der Bauchsorg Herr uns behüt,
hilf, daß wir trauen auf dein Güt,
und nach deim REich stets trachten mehr
denn nach zeitlichen Gut und Ehr.

Du Gott, der nach allweisem Rath

Here is my translation of the “domestic estate” hymn, “Du Gott, der nach allweisem Rath” (Friedrich Fabricius, d. 1703), in ELGB #378. Fischer has not entry for our hymn. Johannes Bachmann, in his discussion of the Mecklenburg “Core” hymnal of 1721 (Gesch. d. ev. Kgs. in Meckl. 1881), includes the title in a list of Friedrich Fabricius’s hymns. Grabau indicates the origin as “ca. 1690, the Hamburg Gesangbuch.” Clearly it is restricted largely to northern hymnals. The earliest instance available to the translator, however, is the Schleswig-Holstein Gsb 1752. The appointed melody is “Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein.”

 

O GOD, who in Thy wisdom great,
Didst with the spiritual estate
And government, the household found,
Upon Thy Word’s unshaken ground.

2 This dear estate preserve, I pray,
By Thy almighty hand alway,
That thereby church and polity
May furnished and appointed be.

3 Let maiden, widow, man and wife
Sincerely lead a holy life,
Pure and unstained in soul and mind,
In body chaste and disciplined.

4 Let maidens ever have in view
To please Thee with adornment true;
Let widows diligently pray
And sigh to Thee both night and day.

5 Let man and wife be one in love,
That either spouse may constant prove
In righteousness and sanctity,
And to Thy service ready be.

6 The marriage bed let be unstained
Let wicked passion be restrained,
That it may neither spouse infect,
Nor those who single life select.

7 Grant that they always may possess
A violet’s deep humbleness,
A lily’s purity divine,
The holiness of balsam fine.

8 Bind man and wife in heart and hand
With virtuous love’s unbreaking band,
To love each other heartily
And live obediently to Thee.

9 No strife let Satan instigate,
Nor stir up anger, wrath, or hate;
Both in the good and evil day
Let man and wife united stay.

10 By marriage be it testified
That Jesus and the church, His bride,
In love one body are, one life,
As is the husband with his wife.

11 Let them, the more this bond they share,
More fervent grow in faithful pray’r;
The more by need and trouble gripped,
The more let them be thus equipped.

12 Let parents well their children rear,
In warning, chast’ning, and Thy fear,
That so Thy glories may be sung
By father, mother, and the young.

13 Oh, keep them mindful, as is just,
That children are Thy gift and trust,
And give them back again to Thee
By teaching and by piety.

14 Let them a shining pattern give
To youth, as holy lives they live
And shun offenses as a whole
As frightful sins that harm the soul.

15 Let children at the same time not
Forget what falleth to their lot;
Their filial duty let them do,
Obeying with a spirit true.

16 That every child may grow and rise,
A plant for heav’nly paradise,
Not for a mockery and shame,
As worthless kindling for the flame.

17 Grant that each may a savor sweet
Give forth of virtue, as is meet,
And by no means good men repel
With stench from the abyss of hell.

18 May they in duty ne’er complain,
But love and honor and sustain
Their parents, as Thy law intends,
With threats of mortal consequence.

19 May parents and their children own
With all their heart, Thee, God, alone,
And honor Thee now in this time,
And praise Thee in th’ eternal clime.

20 Let servants in simplicity
Obey their masters willingly,
As servants to the Lord on high,
Not only servants to the eye.

21 Let hearts of masters be inclined
To cultivate a father’s mind
And keep their office fittingly
From turning into tyranny.

22 O God, the home-estate increase,
That, like a holy house of peace,
It may unto Thy service tend
And to all angels pleasure lend!

den Hausstand selbst geordnet hat,
daß er soll bleiben bis ans End
wie geist- und weltlich Regiment.

2 Ich bitte Dich, erhalt den Stand
mit Deiner starken Gnaden-Hand,
damit durch Ihn bestellet sei,
die Kirche samt der Polizei.

3 Laß Jungfraun, Wittwen, Eheleut
in ungefärbter Heiligkeit,
der Seelen nach recht hell und rein,
am Leibe keusch und züchtig sein.

4 Laß Jungfraun sorgen, wie sie Dir
gefallen in der rechten Zier,
der Wittwen Leben werd verbracht
mit Seufzen, Beten Tag und nacht.

5 Laß Ehleut einig sein in Lieb,
daß jedes Theil sich stetig üb
in Heilig- und Gerechtigkeit,

die Eltern, so wie Dein Gebot
befiehlt, und dräuet sonst den Tod.

19 Laß Eltern samt den Kindern Dich,
o wahrer Gott herzinniglich
in dieser Zeit erkennen, ehrn,
und ewig dort Dein Lob vermehrn.

20 Laß auch die Knecht in Einfalt gern
Gehorsam leisten ihren Herrn,
als Christi Knecht, und nicht allein
nur Diener für den Augen sein.

21 Lenk auch der Herren Herz dahin,
daß sie stets haben Vatersinn,
und brauchen Herrschaft so dabei,
daß sie nicht werde Tyrannei.

22 Breit Du, o Gott, den Hausstand aus,
daß, als ein heilig Kirchenhaus,
er sei zu Deinem Dienst bequem
und allen Engeln angenehm.
