Here is my supplemental translation for the death hymn “Ich weiß es wird mein Ende kommen” (Salomo Franck, d. 1725), from Ev.-luth. Gsb #654, first appearing in the author’s Geist- und Weltliche Poesien (Jena, 1711). The translation by Winkworth of two stanzas was altered by herself, later altered further and augmented for the Ev. Luth. Hymnal (Ohio, 1888). Here I supply the remaining two stanzas, 2 and 4. The appointed melody is “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.”

I KNOW full well death must befall me;
I know not when, or where, or how:
It may be that my God will call me
Today, tomorrow, even now;
Ere yet this present hour is fled,
This living body may be dead.

2 By this I am no fear afforded,
But onward to my hour I press,
Assured ’tis in God’s hands recorded;
Death helps me but to blessedness;
When I the mortal put away,
I’ll put on what will last for aye.

3 I know,—God hath this knowledge given—
To me death is not death, indeed;
To me death is a gate to heaven,
A bound and end of all my need,
A gentle evening, peaceful, blest,
When I have passed from toil to rest.

4 Therefore I wait with heartfelt yearning,
Till from the world death summons me,
With joy that messenger discerning,
Who comes at Jesus’ kind decree,
My spirit from this world to lead
And on the heav’nly way to speed.

5 Lord, let my soul, with unfeigned gladness,
In living faith Thy call await
To leave its cave of sin and sadness,
And this vain world for heaven's estate;
O keep my heart prepared alway,
To lay aside this mortal clay.

6 Lord, grant that, by contrition riven,
My heart I daily offer Thee,
And let me close this life for heaven,
Sealed by Thy death and agony:
O let Thy death, with passion rife,
My comfort be, my balm and life.

7 Lord, daily let me die then, ever;
And at the last stand Thou by me,
That death may not from Thee sever,
But bring me nearer unto Thee!
Then welcome my last hour shall be,
When, where, and how it pleaseth Thee.

in Gottes Händen angeschrieben,
der Tod hilft mir zur Seligkeit;
wenn ich, was sterblich, abgethan,
zieh ich, was unverweslich, an.

3 Ich weis auch Gottes theurem Worte,
daß mir der Tod nicht sei ein Tod;
er ist mir eine Himmelspforte,
ein Ziel und Ende meiner Noth,
ein sanfter Abend, der mich kühlt,
wenn ich des Tages Last gefühlt.

4 Drum wart ich auch mit Herzverlangen,
bis mich der tod der Welt entrückt:
mit Freuden will ich ihn empfangen,
weil Jesus diesen Boten schickt,
der aus der Welt führt meinen Geist
und mir den Weg zum Himmel weist.

5 Laß nur, Herr Jesu! meine Seele
im wahren Glauben rüstig stehn,
wenn sie aus dieser Jammerhöhle
und aus den schnöden Welt soll gehn:
Ach mache stets meine Herz bereit
zur Reife nach der Seligkeit!

6 Ach! hilf, daß ich durch stetig Büßen
dir opfre ein zerknirschtes Herz,
und laß meine Leben mich beschließen
auf deinen Tod und bittern Schmerz!
Ach! laß mir deine Todespein
mein Labsal,Trost und Leben sein,

7 Herr Jesu! laß mich täglich sterben,
steh mir in Todesnöthen bei:
damit der Tod mir kein Verderben,
vielmehr des Lebens Anfang sei!
so scheid ich fröhlich von der Welt,
wie, wo, und wann er dir gefällt!

Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben

Here is my translation of the death hymn, “Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben” (Salomo Franck, d. 1725), from Evang.-Lutherisches Gsb #650, originally published in the author’s Geist- und Weltlicher Poesien Zweiter Theil (Jena, 1716) with the title: “The Christian Dying upon Christ.” The appointed melody is “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.”

IN Christ I meet my death impending,
Assured with peace and fearlessness.
His blood will be the color lending
For my most beauteous wedding dress.
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

2 On Christ I meet my death impending,
’Tis well within His wounds to die.
In Him this shall not be the ending;
Deep in His blood I safely lie;
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

3 On Christ I meet my death impending,
Within His side myself I cast,
So I’m an heir of life unending.
Then break my heart, oh, break at last!
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

4 On Christ I meet my death impending;
He doth abide when all forsake;
Among His blood-won troops attending,
Beside His flag, my post I take;
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

5 On Christ I meet my death impending;
Lord Jesus, take my soul to Thee!
My Savior grants a blessed ending,
And everything is gain for me;
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

6 On Christ I meet my death impending
When death shall my last vision take,
When color from my lips is wending,
And when my heart at last shall break,
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

7 On Christ I meet my death impending;
By Thee are body and soul possessed;
Lord Jesus, grant a blessed ending!
Oh, take me to eternal rest!
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

8 On Christ I meet my death impending;
Oh, help me in the last distress!
The better portion to me sending,
Make sweet for me death’s bitterness!
On Christ alone my hope I keep:
On Him I live, and so I’ll sleep.

GERMAN
Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben,
getrost mit Fried und Freudigkeit.
In seinem Blute will ich färben
mein allerschönstes Hochzeitskleid.
Mein Jesus ist mien Trost allein,
auf Jesum leb und schlaf ich ein.

2 Auf meinem Jesum will ich sterben,
in seinen Wunden stirbt sich's gut.
Er läßt mich nimmermehr verderben;
ich senke mich tief in sein Blut.
Mein Jesus ist mien Trost allein,
auf Jesum leb und schlaf ich ein.

3 Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben,
in seine Seite schließ ich mich;
so kann ich doch den Himmel erben.
Brich immerhin, meine Herze, brich.
Mein Jesus ist mien Trost allein,
auf Jesum leb und schlaf ich ein.

4 Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben,
er bleibt, wenn Alles mich verläßt;
der durch sein Blut mich wollen werben,
bei dessen Fahne steh ich fest.
Mein Jesus ist mien Trost allein,
auf Jesum leb und schlaf ich ein.

5 Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben.
Herr Jesu, nimm die Seele hin,
mein Heiland läßt mich nicht verderben,
so hab ich Alles zum Gewinn.
Mein Jesus ist mein Trost allein,
auf Jesum leb und schlaf ich ein.

6 Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben,
wenn mir vergeht der Augen Licht.
Wenn Mund und Lippen sich entfärben,
und wenn mir auch meine Herze bricht.
Mein Jesus ist mien Trost allein,
auf Jesum leb und schlaf ich ein.

7 Auf meinen Jesum will ich sterben,
mit Leib und Seele bin ich dein.
Herr Jesu, laß mich nicht verderben,
ach laß mich ewig selig sein.
Mein Jesus ist mien Trost allein,
auf Jesum leb und schlaf ich ein.

8 Auf meine Jesum will ich sterben,
ach Jesu,hilf in letzter Noth!

Here is my translation of the justification hymn, “Ich bin im Himmel angeschrieben (/ ich bin ein Kind der Seligkeit)” (Salomo Franck, d. 1725), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #384, first in the author’s Geist- und Weltlicher Poesien (Jena, 1716) and not to be confused with Joh. Dan. Hense’s redemption hymn, “Ich bin im Himmel angeschrieben / und Gottes kindern zugezählt” (also in Ev.-Luth. Gsb #97). Fischer notes that our hymn was mistakenly ascribed to Joh. Ernst Wenigk in Rambach’s hymnal of 1735. The Wisconsin hymnal omits the stanza 3 (too heavy on poetic conceit and morbid imagery for Rationalists?) and shows some other alterations (original readings in square brackets). The appointed melody is “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.”

I KNOW my name in heav’n is written,
And I’m a child of blessedness;
What care I, then, though often smitten
By sin and by this world’s distress?
I know my destiny was laid
In Christ before the world was made.

2 The Lamb with His own lifeblood stained me,
And in Life’s Book recorded me,
He every good and blessing gained me,
From death and curse He set me free.
What torment can my heart be giv’n?
I am predestined unto heav’n.

3 What if the Law’s fierce tempest rages?
The Book of Life dispels all fear!
The wounds of Christ, its crimson pages;
Its words, the worthy nails and spear.
There to my comfort I may read:
“Thee have I loved in word and deed.”

4 Though countless debts I see recorded
Within sin’s black and awful book,
By Jesus I am grace afforded,
Upon the rolls of Life to look,
Where my election I behold,—
My name among His chosen fold!

5 With Jesus I’ll depart unshaken,
Faith’s wedding garment I will dye
With blood that from the Lamb was taken,
And enter into bliss on high
And find the greater banquet there–
O glad election, grace most fair!

No fiend shall steal this consolation:
That I was chosen ere the start,
In Jesus’ blood I have salvation
By grace through faith wrought in the heart;
On this I’ll live and die some day,
On Christ I will conclude life’s way.

GERMAN
Ich bin im Himmel angeschrieben;
ich bin ein Kind der Seligkeit.
Was kann die Sünde mich betrüben
und alles Leiden dieser Zeit?
Ich weiß, daß ich von Anbeginn
in Christo auserwählet bin.

2 Das Lamm hat mich mit seinem Blute
gezeichnet in des Lebens Buch, […das Lebensbuch]
und mir erlanget alles Gute,
Erlösung von dem Tod und Fluch.
Was ist's doch, was mein Herze quält? [ist]
Ich bin zum Himmel auserwählt.

**3 Was schreckt mich des Gesetzes Wetter?
Ich seh ins Lebensbuch hinein,
Wo Christi Wunden rothe Blätter,
die Schriften Speer und Nägel sein;
Hier les ich was mir Tröstung giebt:

O freudenvolle Gnadenwahl!

6 Kein Teufel soll den Trost mir rauben,
daß ich erwählt von Anbeginn,
daß ich aus Gnaden durch den glauben
an Christi Blut erlöset bin.
So leb ich denn und strebe drauf:
Auf Christum schließ ich meinen Lauf.

Brunnquell aller Gütigkeit

Here is my translation of the repentance hymn “Brunnquell aller Gütigkeit” (Salomo Franck, 1711), from Ev.-Luth. Gsb #360. No author is given there, only the indication “Lüneburger Gesangbuch” likely the source from which it came into the Pennsylvania Ev. Gsb. Fischer does not know of it. Of older books, it is referenced, i.a., already in König’s Harmonischer Liederschatz (1750). Wetzel lists a hymn by this title among the hymns of Fruitbearer Salomo Franck (d. 1725) included in his 8th edition of Geist- und Weltlichen Poesien (Jena, 1711). Various hymnals of the 1730s-50s include titles such as “Anguish of sin, Longing for Grace” and indicate the melody “Schwing dich auf.” Schircks’ (Geistliche Sänger . . . Halle, 1855) edition of German hymns in their original form also includes the text and title from Franck’s book with the title “Repentance Hymn in which the poor sinner likens himself to the Prodigal Son and prays the heavenly Father for grace (Luke 15:11–32). Mel. Jesu Leiden Pein und Tod. Printed 1711.” As usual, I indicate in square brackets the earlier readings departing from that in the Wisconsin hymnal, which incidentally indicates the melody “Christus der uns selig macht.” A new tune is also found in the Evangelisches Gesangbuch mit vierstimmigen Melodien (1894).

FOUNTAIN of all goodness Thou,
Father ever gracious!
See my heart so burdened bow
Under weights vexatious;
As the wayward son I go,
As sin’s child I waver;
Pay me back not as I owe,—
Oh, let me find favor!

2 I am filled with grief and pain
Since I’ve hurt so cru’lly
Thy true father-heart again,
Which doth love me truly.
Day and night in sin I’ve spent
In all vice have wandered;
All the bounties by Thee lent
I have vainly squandered.

3 Lo, my sin I ever see,
Which I sought half-witted;
In the sight of heav’n and Thee
I have crimes committed;
Father, Thou wouldst save me now,
Yet my sins appall me!
I cannot deserve that Thou
Thy own child shouldst call me.

4 Father, Thou art rich in grace,
Fervent in forgiving:
Let me take a servant’s place,
Let this wretch keep living!
Let the starving soul be fed,
Which in famine pineth,
Give to me Thy mercy-bread,
Ere my heart declineth.

5 Father, nothing I possess,
Naked fall before Thee.
Great is e’er Thy faithfulness;
Help me, I implore Thee,
If Thy comfort not be shown,
In my sin I languish;
Let Thy kiss of love be known
To my soul in anguish.

6 Give my hand of faith the ring
Of Thy Holy Spirit,
Grant this pledge of love may bring
Comfort of Thy merit;
Deign Thyself to place the shoe,
On my foot, O Father,
That I may Thy way pursue
And desire none other.

7 Fit me with the garment fair
Which Thy Son supplièd
When in mercy, poor and bare,
For the world He dièd.
Of Thy feast of grace and love
Let me taste and savor,
Which against all grief shall prove
My refreshment ever.

8 Lord my God! Cast me not off,
Father of all merit!
For Thy heart doth break with love;
Soothe my mind and spirit,
Save me from sin’s torments dread
Yet my heart aggrieving;
Say: “My Son, thou once wast dead,
And again art living.”

Brunnquell aller Gütigkeit,
Vater aller Gnaden!

2 Ach! ich fühle Qual und Schmerz;
weil ich so betrübet
dein getreues Vaterherz,

der ich nachgewandelt;
Vater, der mein Heil begehrt;
dir will ich bekennen:
Vater, ach! ich bin nicht werth,
mich dein Kind zu nennen.

4 Vater, der an Gnade reich,
brünstig im Erbarmen!
Mache mich den Knechten gleich,
hilf, ach hilf mir Armen!
Siehe doch die Hungersnoth,
die die Seele plaget.
Reiche mir dein Gnadenbrod,
eh mein Herz verzaget.

5 Sieh, ich falle nackt und bloß,
Vater! vor dir nieder.
Deine Treu ist ewig groß,
tröste mich doch wieder;
weil ich sonst verschmachten muß
in der Angst der Sünden.
Laß den süßen Liebeskuß
meine Seel empfinden.

6 Ziere meine Glaubenshand
meinen Fuß bereite du, [lege Du mir selber an,]
[emsig sonder Ruhe.]

7 Schenke mir das schöne Kleid,
das dein Sohn erworben,
als er aus Barmherzigkeit
für die Welt gestorben. [vor…]
Laß dein theures Gnadenmahl [laß dein Lieb- und…]
mich im Glauben schmecken,
und mir wider alle Qual
Freud und Trost erwecken.

8 Herr, mein Gott! verwirf mich nicht,
Vater aller Güte,
dessen Herz aus Liebe bricht!
Tröste mein Gemüthe.
Hilf mir aus der Sündennoth,
die mein Herz umgeben.
Sprich: Mein Sohn! du warest todt,
und sollst wieder leben.

Es ist vollbracht! Gott ist verschieden

Here is my translation of the Passion Hymn, “Es ist vollbracht! Gott ist verschieden” (Salomo Franck). The meter is that of “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten,” but a proper tune has also been published. An early instance showing the first text type is found here. I have included some of the more significant alterations for your interest.

’TIS FINISHED quite! Behold, God dieth,
My Jesus doth His eyelids close,
The Prince of peace all peaceful lieth,
The Sun of Life sinks to repose,
Yea, sinks into death’s soundless night,
O dearest word: “
’Tis finished quite!”

2 ’Tis finished quite! As God hath spoken!
Th’ eternal Word His speech withholds.
That heart with faithfulness is broken,
A rock Salvation’s Rock enfolds,
The highest pow’r is hid from sight.
O truest word: “
’Tis finished quite!”

3
’Tis finished quite! I am forgiven;
Hush, conscience, do not cry so sore,

Though oft our sins have cried to heaven,
The Lamb's dear blood cries all the more.
Now vanquished lies hell’s vaunted might.
O sweetest word: “
’Tis finished quite!”

4
’Tis finished quite! My heart's deep longing,
Round Thy dear body and Thy breast
The angels gladly would be thronging;
Oh, take my heart, Lord, for Thy rest!
Where love has carved thy tomb aright.
O soothing word: “
’Tis finished quite!”

5
’Tis finished quite! Here I will slumber,
And take Christ's tombstone for my bed;
Here wait the angels without number
Where I, with Jacob, lay my head.
Unbarred is heaven's portal bright:
O word of life: “
’Tis finished quite!”

GERMAN
1 Es ist vollbracht! Gott ist verschieden!

mein Jesus schließt die Augen zu,

Der Friedensfürst schläft ganz in Frieden;

die Lebenssonne geht zur Ruh

und sinkt in stille todesnacht,

O theures Wort: Es ist vollbracht!

2 Es ist vollbracht! wie Gott gesprochen!

das ewge Wort muß sprachlos sein.

Das Herz bei True wird gebrochen,

den Fels des Heils umfaßt ein Stein,

Die höchste Kraft ist nun verschmacht.

O wahres [werthes] Wort: Es ist vollbracht!

3 Es ist vollbracht! Schweig mein Gewissen,

Ihr Sünder schreit nicht allzusehr [. . . fasset neuen Muth!
]

]
Nun ist getilgt der Hölle(n) Macht.

O süßes Wort; Es ist vollbracht!

4 Es ist vollbracht! Mein Herzverlangen,

du allerliebste Leiche du; [o hochgelobte Liebe du]

die Engel wünschen zu umfangen,
 [dich wünschen Engel zu empfangen]
nimm auch in meinem Herzen Ruh,

wo Liebe dir ein Grab gemacht! [wo dir die Lieb ein Grab gemacht!
]
Trostvolles Wort; Es ist vollbracht!

5 Es ist vollbracht! Ich will mich legen

zur ruh auf Christi Grabesstein.

Die Engel sind allhie zugegen,

ich schlummre sanft mit [wie] Jakob ein.

Die Himmelspfort ist aufgemacht.

O Lebenswort: Es ist vollbracht!
