Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wie holdselig seind doch die Füß” (N. Herman, 1580), from the author’s revised and expanded Sontags-Evangelia, for the feast of hte Division (or Dispersion) of the Apostles, observed on the 15th of July.
Mel.: Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort.
HOW beautiful and fair the feet,
How kindly and exceeding sweet
The preachers’ voice of truth and cheer,
Which bring good doctrine to our ear.
2 Souls hear of peace and righteousness
Salvation too and blessedness,
With pardon for iniquity
Which Christ gained us eternally.
3 When Jesus His dear twelve dispersed
To teach throughout Judea first,
He bade them through the land to stray
But not into the Gentiles’ way.
4 To them He also clearly saith
Ye shall not teach My Word and faith
In any cities of those lands
Belonging to Samaritans.
5 But seek My sheep that wander free
In Israel, so dear to Me;
Go first into their house and tent,
For whose good I was firstly sent.
6 Say unto them that now at hand
The heav’nly kingdom here doth stand,
The sick among them heal and cure,
The lepers cleanse, their skin make pure.
7 Raise up the dead from deathly sleep,
And where the devils lodging keep
Thence cast them out, and naught receive,
But give, as God you freely gave.
8 And when ye pass some city wall
Or humble gate of village small,
Inquire there who may worthy be,
And with that household tarry ye.
9 No purse, no money, silver, gold
Shall ye upon your persons hold,
For he that works shall earn his food,
If so be that his work is good.
10 And when into a house ye come
Salute it: “Peace be on this home!”
But if it be not worthy, then
Your peace let come to you again.
11 Where’er no house shall you receive
Nor city hear you, when ye leave,
That place’s dust shake from your feet,
That they may have a witness meet.
12 They fail, like Sodom, to repent,
And, faithless, must bear punishment,
Yea, it shall be for them far worse,
And Sodom have the lesser curse.
13 Behold, I send you forth abroad,
Among the wolves as sheep of God,
As serpents wise, yet without wile,
As harmless doves in simple style.
14 Beware of men, for often they
Will to the council you convey,
Scourge in the synagogues, and bring
Before both governor and king.
15 But take no thought nor worried seek
How and what clearly ye shall speak.
My Spirit shall in you be heard,
And in that same hour speak the word.
16 The world will hate you without shame,
Because of My most holy name,
But who shall to the end endure
With Me salvation shall secure.
17 If from one city chased you be,
Into another wisely flee.
As they to Me the Master do,
So shall they to the servant too.
18 Who Me before men will confess,
Without fear or false-heartedness,
Before My Father (this I say)
I will confess him on that Day.
19 These are the lessons right and true
Which Christ bade His disciples do,
Whom as His teachers He dispersed
And to Judea sent them first.
20 Then did the Holy Spirit come,
And bade them o’er the world to roam,
And cry aloud the Word of God
To every heathen race abroad.
21 For this, Lord Christ, our thanks to Thee,
That Thou didst come incarnately,
And hast made known to us Thy Word;
Help us hold well what we have heard!

GERMAN
Wie holdselig seind doch die Füß,
wie freundlich ist nur und gar süß,
der Prediger Stimm, Trost und Lehr:
die uns bringen die gute Lehr.
2 Vom Fried und von Gerechtigkeit,
der Seelen Heil guten Bescheid,
von Ablaß aller Missethat,
den uns Christus erworben hat.
3 Da Jesus sein Jünger aussandt,
zu lehren in das Jüdisch Land,
da hieß er sie vornehmlich das,
zu meiden dann der Heiden Straß.
4 Zu ihnen er auch klärlich spricht,
ihr sollt nun mein Wort lernen nicht,
in Städten und Märkten voraus,
die von der Samariter Haus.
5 Sucht meine Schaf, die seind verlorn
in Israel, den ich erkorn,
zu den erstlich all ziehet hin,
den ich zugut gesendet bin.
6 Sagt ihnen, daß kommen herbei,
das Himmelreich, und nahet sei,
und macht ihn ihr Kranken gesund,
den Stummen löst auf ihren Mund.
7 Vom Aufsatz die Leut machet rein,
treibt Teufel aus in ihrer Gmein,
die Toten ihr aufwecken sollt,
nehmt darum weder Geld noch Gold.
8 Dann ihr es habt von Gott umsunst,
wann ihr kommt in ein Stadt mit Gunst,
so fragt: Wer des mög würdig sein,
bei dem so bleibt und kehret ein.
9 Kein Taschen, Geld, Silber und Gold,
gar nicht ihr mit euch tragen sollt,
wer arbeiet, der verdient sein Speis,
so er ankehrt möglichen Fleiß.
10 Bald ihr werdt in ein Haus eingahn,
grüß[t] ihnen und Fried bietet an,
wo dies die Leut nicht würdig gleich,
kehrt wieder ein der Fried zu euch.
11 Wo euch ein Stadt oder ein Haus
nicht annimmt, so geht wieder aus,
den Staub schüttlet von Füßen ab,
daß sie der Straf ein Zeugnis hab.
12 Wie Sodoma, thut sie mit Buß,
den Unglauben sie büssen muß,
ja, es wird ihr ärger ergehn,
wird Sodoma vor ihr bestehn.
13 Ich send euch aus wie Schaf in gmein,
unter die Wölf des sollt ihr sein,
wie Schlangen klug, doch gar ohn List,
wie Tauben, simpel zu der Frist.
14 Vor Menschen euch wohl sehet für,
oft werdt ihr vor die rotte Thür
vor Rath müssen, und Oberkeit,
man wird euch thun in Schulen Leid.
15 Doch sollt kein Sorg ihr tragen gar,
wie und was sei zu reden klar,
mein Geist wird sein in eurem Mund,
und reden vor euch zu der Stund.
16 Wird hassen euch all Welt ohn Scham,
und sein um meinetwillen gram,
wer an das End wird standhaft sein,
der wird sein ein Miterbe mein.
17 Seid ihr verjagt aus einer Stadt,
in ein andre geht fort mit Rath,
was sie gethon dem Meister mir,
den Jüngern wird man thun hinfür.
18 Der mich bekennt vor Menschen frei,
ohn alle Furcht und Heuchelei,
den will ich vor dem Vater mein
an jenem Tag bekennen frei.
19 Das ist die recht Instruction,
die sein Jüngern gab Gottes Sohn,
da er sie aus zu lehren sandt,
zuerst in das Jüdische Land.
20 Nach dem auch kam der heilig Geist,
in alle Welt gehn er sie heißt,
frei rufen aus sein göttlich Wort,
auch den Heiden an allem Ort.
21 Des dankt man dir Herr Jesu Christ,
daß du in das Fleisch kommen bist,
hast uns dein Wort auch kund gethan;
hilf, daß wir es recht nehmen an.
