Here is my translation of the hymn, “So seid nur mäßig jederzeit” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, the Epistle paraphrase for Exaudi Sunday, from 1 Peter 4.

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.
 

BRETHREN, be mod’rate and prepare,
Soberly watching unto pray’r;
Pure charity have t’ward all men;
For that shall cover many a sin

2 Grudge not your hospitality,
Let each the other’s servant be,
That all may be by gifts relieved,
As each man hath of God received.

3 Thus be the stewards of God’s grace,
Disposed aright to time and place.
Whoever speaks, let him speak not,
But as the Word of God hath taught.

4 Who hath an office, let him do
In all estates his office true.
Of the ability bestowed
And wrought within us by our God.

5 That in all things our Maker we
May glorify continually,
Through Jesus Christ, to whom all praise,
Pow’r, and dominion be always.

So seid nur mäßig jederzeit
und nüchtern zum Gebet bereit,
die Liebe sei stets unbefleckt,
die Lieb der Sünden Menge deckt.

2 Ohn Murmeln sollt ihr gastfrei sein,
einander dienen in gemein
mit der Gab jeder in der That,
wie er von Gott empfangen hat.

3 So könnt ihr wohl Haushalter sein
der Gnad, und euch recht schicken drein.
Wer redet, der red immerfort
nichts anders als nur Gottes Wort.

4 Wer ein Amt hat, der thu das Amt,
in allen Ständen ingesamt
aus dem Vermögen und der Kraft,
die Gott darreicht und in uns schafft.

5 Auf daß in allen Dingen wir
Gott immer preisen für und für
durch Jesum Christ, dem ist bereit
Ehr und Gewalt in Ewigkeit.
