Laß mich, Herr, die Gerechtigkeit

 Here is my translation of the hymn “Laß mich, Herr, die Gerechtigkeit” (J. Olearius, 1671), appointed in the author’s Singekunst for Trinity VI (Gospel), where it is noted that “Durch Adams Fall” is one of the usual hymns.

Mel.: Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt.

LORD, grant me in true faith to gain
That righteousness far fairer,
That evermore removes the stain
Of all my sin and error!
Thy precious blood, / my highest Good,
Heals all my wounds distressing;
Yea, ’tis Thy grace / that doth efface
The debts my soul oppressing.

2 Instead of wrath and ire, let me
Be robed in heartfelt meekness,
And stifle by humility
The storms of sin and weakness;
Lord, by Thy might / let sin’s dark night
From my heart and mind be driven,
In peace and joy / without alloy
Keep me a child of heaven.

3 Lord, grant Thy grace and faithfulness
While earth remains my dwelling;
Therewith each morning newly bless
My soul beyond all telling;
And I to Thee / unceasingly
Will praise and sing Thy glory,
And after this / in endless bless
With all my heart adore Thee.

GERMAN

Laß mich, Herr, die Gerechtigkeit
mit wahren Glauben finden,
die mich rein macht in Ewigkeit
von allen meinen Sünden.
Dein theures Blut, / mein höchstes Gut,
das heilet allen Schaden;
ja deine Huld / tilgt meine Schuld,
mit welcher ich beladen.

2 Gieb, daß ich mich, statt Zorn und Grimm,
mit wahrer Sanftmuth schmücke,
durch Demuth allen ungestüm
in meiner Brust ersticke.
Laß deine Macht / die Sündennacht
aus meinem Herzen treiben,
und mich allzeit / in Fried und Freud
dein liebes Kind verbleiben.

3 Herr, schenk mir deine Güt und Treu
so lang ich leb auf Erden,
und laß sie alle Morgen neu
an meiner Seele werden;
so rühm ich dich / beständiglich,
so werd ich deinen Namen
nach dieser Zeit / in Ewigkeit
von Herzen preisen. Amen.

Du liebst, o Gott, Gerechtigkeit

Here is my translation of the hymn on Christian justice, “Du liebst, o Gott, Gerechtigkeit” (Philipp Friedrich Hiller, d. 1769), in GGELB #410 with melody assignment “Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn.” It is absent from Fischer’s Lexicon. I find it in Samuel Diterich’s Lieder für den öffentlichen Gottesdienst (1768), no. 46, with title “On righteousness.”

O God, Thou lovest righteousness,
But whoso would the right suppress,
And wrongeth men, Thou hatest.
Thou givest each his due reward,
Nor dost the man nor work regard,
Yea, though it be the greatest.

2 O righteous God! Thy Spirit give,
That I may never, while I live,
From righteousness be veering,
Nor think it well by wealth or might
To violate my neighbor’s right
For greed or profiteering.

3 Plant dignity within my breast,
That I may do love’s duty blest
With joy to every other.
A heart that only wrong conceives,
Seeks only harm, and men aggrieves,
How can it love its brother?

4 May none have cause groan at me,
May all my heart seek constantly
To give my neighbor ever
What he may rightfully demand,
And with all men in peace to stand,
And unity endeavor.

5 Let me assay with constant zeal
With every other so to deal
As I from others favor;
Let me no human heart oppress
With sorrow, worry, or distress
By my too stern behavior.

6 Lord, with the measure which I now
To neighbors measure, therewith Thou
To me again shalt measure.
Let this to fairness me incite;
Then will love’s duty and the right
Remain my constant pleasure.

GERMAN

Du liebst, o Gott, Gerechtigkeit,
und hassest den, der sie entweiht,
am Nächsten Unrecht übet.
Du bists, der jedem seinen Lohn,
ohn alles Ansehn der Person,
noch seinen Werken giebet.

2 Gerechter Gott! laß deinen Geist
zu dem, was recht und billig heißt,
stets meine Seele lenken.
Nie komm es mir doch in den Sinn,
aus schnöder Habsucht, um Gewinn,
des Nächsten Recht zu kränken.

3 Pflanz Redlichkeit in meine Brust,
und laß mich stets mit wahrer Lust
der Liebe Pflichten üben.
Ein Herz, das nur auf Unrecht denkt,
nur Schaden sucht, und andre kränkt:
wie kann das Brüder lieben?

4 Nie seufze jemand wieder mich!
Mein ganzes Herz bestrebe sich,
dem Nächsten gern zu geben,
was er mit Recht verlangen kann,
und immerfort mit jedermann
in Einigkeit zu leben.

5 Laß mich beständig dahin sehn,
mit jeglichem so umzugehn,
wie ichs von ihm begehre;
damit ich keines Menschen Herz,
durch meine Härte je mit Schmerz,
und Kümmerniß beschwere.

6 Herr, mit dem Maß, damit ich hier,
dem Nächsten messe, wirst du mir
dereinst auch wieder messen.
Dies reize mich zur Billigkeit,
so werd ich auch zu keiner Zeit
der Liebe Pflicht vergessen.

Für uns, O Gott, gehört

Here is my translation of the hymn on faith, sanctification, and baptismal life, “Für uns, O Gott, gehört” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #82 for the Sixth Sunday after Trinity with melody assignment “Nun danket alle Gott.” The English adaptation in The Church Hymn Book, titled “Our Righteousness Must Far Exceed” is compose in 7 stanzas of Long Meter. Note that Henkel rhymes the odd lines, which in this meter are usually unrhymed.

TO us, O Lord, belongs
A better work and living
Than hypocritic songs
Pray’rs, reading, and almsgiving;
For these can all be done
For show, with prideful will;
Would we before God stand,
It must be better still.

2 Faith makes man just and right,
And makes us love God truly,
Just as a servant bright
Performs his service duly,
Not as a Pharisee
With outward show alone,
Who would but honored be
And as a saint be known.

3 True Christianity
Against man’s vengeance preaches;
Calls us upright to be,
And love for all it teaches,
Calls not a brother fool,
Its heart the Savior sees,
And takes Him as its rule,
And loves its enemies.

4 A Christian such as this
Alone such off’ring maketh
As pleasing to God is,
And as He holy taketh.
He loves his brother too,
And serves him heartily,
Forgives what debt is due,
And reconciled would be.

5 While now we walk each day
The way unto salvation,
Let us our Maker pray
To pardon our transgression,
Employing prudently
The time of grace while here,
And be prepared to see
Our fatherland most dear.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
Our righteousness must far exceed
That of the Pharisees indeed;
It must be of a diff’rent kind,
Such as renews the heart and mind.

2 To sing and pray and make a show,
Is what the hypocrite can do;
May seem to act the Christian part,
Yet not the cause of Christ at heart.

3 Where grace divine reigns not within,
The mind is still attached to sin,
The best devotion, dead and cold,
As was the Pharisees of old.

4 But diff’rent is the b’lievers state,
He will not live at such a rate;
His case unto himself is known,
He pleads no merits of his own.

5 He pleads not for self-righteousness,
But all he pleads is pard’ning grade;
All which he trusts he shall partake,
And that alone for Jesus’ sake.

6 He gains that faith which works by love,
And all within him live and move
In Christ his Savior and his God,
Who hath redeemed him with His blood.

7 Here is the Christian set to view:
Lord grant that I may be such too;
Grant me that righteousness I need,
Which does the Pharisees exceed.

GERMAN
Für uns, o Gott! gehört
ein bessers Werk und Wesen
als was der Heuchler lehrt,
nur Singen, Beten, Lesen;
dies alles kann geschehn
aus Hochmuth und im Schein;
will man vor Gott bestehn,
so muß was bessers sein.

2 Der Glaube macht gerecht
und schafft, daß man Gott liebet,
gleichwie ein frommer Knecht
in seinem Dienst sich übet;
nicht wie der Pharisär
mit einem bloßen Schein,
der suchet eigne Ehr
und will doch heilig sein.

3 Ein wahres Christenthum
will keine Rach ausüben;
es macht wahrhaftig fromm
und lehrt uns alle lieben;
nicht Narr, nicht Rache [Raca] schildt,
das Herze ist gericht,
nach Jesu Lehr und Bild,
haßt selbst den Feind ja nicht.

4 Auch nur ein solcher Christ
kann opfern seine Gaben,
wies Gott gefällig ist,
sowie er sie will haben;
er seinen Bruder liebt,
auch ihm von Herzen dient,
gern alle Schuld vergiebt
und sich mit ihm versöhnt.

5 Da wir nun täglich gehn
den Weg zum andern Leben,
laßt uns Gott herzlich flehn
die Sünde zu vergeben,
damit die Gnadenzeit
werd hier recht angewandt,
so werden wir bereit
fürs ewig Vaterland.
