Laß mich, Herre, die Gerechtigkeit

 Here is my translation of the hymn “Laß mich, Herre, die Gerechtigkeit” (J. Olearius, 1671), appointed in the author’s Singekunst for Trinity VI (Gospel), where it is noted that “Durch Adams Fall” is one of the usual hymns.

Mel.: Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt.
 

LORD, grant me in true faith to gain
That righteousness far fairer,
That evermore removes the stain
Of all my sin and error!
Thy precious blood, / my highest Good,
Heals all my wounds distressing;
Yea, ’tis Thy grace / that doth efface
The debts my soul oppressing.

2 Instead of wrath and ire, let me
Be robed in heartfelt meekness,
And stifle by humility
The storms of sin and weakness;
Lord, by Thy might / let sin’s dark night
From my heart and mind be driven,
In peace and joy / without alloy
Keep me a child of heaven.

3 Lord, grant Thy grace and faithfulness
While earth remains my dwelling;
Therewith each morning newly bless
My soul beyond all telling;
And I to Thee / unceasingly
Will praise and sing Thy glory,
And after this / in endless bless
With all my heart adore Thee.

Laß mich, Herr, die Gerechtigkeit
mit wahren Glauben finden,
die mich rein macht in Ewigkeit
von allen meinen Sünden.
Dein theures Blut, / mein höchstes Gut,
das heilet allen Schaden;
ja deine Huld / tilgt meine Schuld,
mit welcher ich beladen.

2 Gieb, daß ich mich, statt Zorn und Grimm,
mit wahrer Sanftmuth schmücke,
durch Demuth allen ungestüm
in meiner Brust ersticke.
Laß deine Macht / die Sündennacht
aus meinem Herzen treiben,
und mich allzeit / in Fried und Freud
dein liebes Kind verbleiben.

3 Herr, schenk mir deine Güt und Treu
so lang ich leb auf Erden,
und laß sie alle Morgen neu
an meiner Seele werden;
so rühm ich dich / beständiglich,
so werd ich deinen Namen
nach dieser Zeit / in Ewigkeit
von Herzen preisen. Amen.
