Betrübtes Jubilate

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Betrübtes Jubilate” (B. Schmolck, 1712), from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, first series, for Jubilate Sunday.  The text is given the title “Sorrows and Parting” (Leiden und Scheiden). Regarding the melody assignment, a note in the original book simply states: “According to a special melody.” No melody is given (nor is there any other in the book), nor has melody  been discovered by the time of this post, though J. P. Krieger seems to have published a cantata by the same name in 1722, that work is lost, and it is possible it used a revised form of the text found in Bayreuth hymnals of that century which was designed to be sung to “Herzlich thut mich verlangen.” Fortunately, two excellent melodies for our text are now available, expertly composed by Dr. Joseph Herl and Mr. Robin D. Fish, Jr., both of which accompany the text very well and I include here with heartfelt thanks to the composers:

Mel.: Betrübtes Jubilate (Herl).

O JUBILATE grievous!

When hearts from Christ receive

Great cause to weep and grieve!

No more to see our Cure–

Oh, how shall we endure?

Who shall of our distress relieve us?

O Jubilate grievous!

2 O Jubilate grievous!

A little while and we

No more our Hope shall see!

Now goes our Prophet great,

Priest, King, and Advocate—

Alas! shall our Physician leave us?

O Jubilate grievous!

3 O Jubilate grievous!

The sun his light doth hide

And shall we glad abide?

No rescuer appears,
From such a sea of tears

And flood of sorrows to retrieve us!

O Jubilate grievous!

4 O Jubilate grievous!

Oh, break, my heart! oh, break!

Thy Friend doth thee forsake.

The world, here and abroad,

All scoffs: “Where is thy God,

That should in mercy soon relieve us?”

O Jubilate grievous!

5 O Jubilate joyous!

My spirit, ponder thus:

Thy Jesus comforts us,

And so His path He takes,

Yet never us forsakes,

Though now a little while annoy us.

O Jubilate joyous!

6 O Jubilate joyous!

This present agony

A little one must be.

His cov’nant God recalls;

From Jesus’ lips there falls

Sweet comfort, lest our grief destroy us:

O Jubilate joyous!

7 O Jubilate joyous!

My weeping shall my cup

With wine of hope fill up.

Who first travails with care,

Shall pleasure after bear;

Thus Christ doth as His host deploy us.

O Jubilate joyous!

8 O Jubilate joyous!

Then let the world rejoice;

I’ll grieve with mournful voice.

Whoe’er his cross’s load

Bears patient on Christ’s road

Reaps joy from tears that now annoy us.

O Jubilate joyous!

9 O Jubilate grievous!

So doth it ever sound

While to this earth we’re bound.

In heaven there is heard

Another, sweeter word;

Glad songs of God shall there employ us:

O Jubilate joyous!

BEtruͤbtes Jubilate,

Da JEſus meinen Geiſt

Jn Thraͤnen baden heiſt.

Jch ſoll ihn nicht mehr ſehn,

Ach! wie ſoll mir geſchehn,

Weñ ich in Angſt und Noth gerathe?

Betruͤbtes Jubilate.

2 Betruͤbtes Jubilate!

Ein kleiner Augenblick

Raubt mir das hoͤchſte Gluͤck.

Ach denckt, wer von mir geht?

Mein Koͤnig, mein Prophet,

Mein Prieſter, Artzt und Advocate.

Betruͤbtes Jubilate!

3 Betruͤbtes Jubilate!

Die Sonne birgt den Schein,

Und ich ſoll froͤlich ſeyn.

Wo nehm ich Rettung her,

Wenn ich im Thraͤnen-Meer

Und in den Jammer-Fluthen wathe?

Betruͤbtes Jubilate!

4 Betruͤbtes Jubilate!

Ach brich, mein Hertze brich,

Dein Freund verlaͤſſet dich.

Die Welt hat ihren Spott,

Und fragt: wo iſt dein GOtt,

Der ſonſt in Gnaden zu dir nahte?

Betruͤbtes Jubilate!

5 Vergnuͤgtes Jubilate!

Mein Geiſt beſinne dich,

Denn JEſus troͤſtet mich.

Der Gang muß wohl geſchehn,

Doch ſoll ich wieder ſehn,

Was ich mit ſchmertzen itzt entrathe.

Vergnuͤgtes Jubilate!

6 Vergnuͤgtes Jubilate!

Es ſoll ja dieſe Pein

Mir nur ein kleines ſeyn.

GOTT denckt an ſeinen Bund,

Und meines JEſu Mund

Verſorget mich mit Troſt uñ Rathe.

Vergnuͤgtes Jubilate!

7 Vergnuͤgtes Jubilate!

Mein weinen ſchenckt mir Wein

Schon in der Hoffnung ein.

Wer erſt mit Angſt gebiehrt,

Wird drauff mit Luſt geziert.

So geht es in dem Chriſten-Staate.

Vergnuͤgtes Jubilate!

8 Vergnuͤgtes Jubilate!

So mag die Welt ſich freun,

Jch wil betruͤbet ſeyn.

Wer seines Creutzes Last

Nur mit Geduld umbfast,

Der erndtet Lust nach Thränen-saate

Vergnügtes Jubilate!

9 Betrübtes Jubilate!

So schallt es immerhin,

Weil ich auff Erden bin.

Jm Himmel ist der Orth,

Da klingt ein ander Wort,

Da singt man erst nach Gottes Rathe:
Vergnügtes Jubilate!

Nun jauchze du Tochter Zion

 Canticle LXVI. Zephaniah’s Song of Comfort,
on the Grace of God, Zeph. 3.

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.

NOW, Zion’s daughter, gladly shout,
Rejoice, O Isr’el, singing!
Thy heart let joyfully sing out,
Away all sorrow flinging!
Let Salem’s joy be clearly proved,
For God thy judgments hath removed
And punishments hath taken.

2 He hath cast out thine enemy,
All troubles He will sever,
And be thy King eternally,
And dwell with thee forever,
And thou shalt never need to fear
Whatever evils may appear,
Henceforth no thing shall harm thee.

3 In Salem then shall it be said,
Be thou no more affrighted,
In Zion too: Be not afraid,
Thy wrongs shall all be righted,
And weights removed. Let not thine hand
Be slack, for God with thee doth stand,
And in thy midst abideth.

4 He will thy mighty Savior be,
O’er thee His pleasure showing,
He will treat thee most lovingly,
All joy and grace renewing,
Thy sins forgive with full assent,
And make with thee a covenant,
That thou may’st live forever.

Nun jauchze du Tochter Zion,
Israel, ruf mit Freuden,
dein Herz sei voller Freud und Wonn,
vergiß all deines Leiden,
Jerusalem soll fröhlich sein,
denn Gott hat all die Strafe dein

2 Er hat all dein Feind abgewendt,
will all Unglück weg treiben,
dein König sein bis an das End,
und ewig bei dir bleiben,
daß du dich fürchten sollt nichte mehr,
für keinem Unglück also sehr,
dir soll hinfort nichts schaden.

3 Alsdenn man zu Jerusalem
wird sagn, fürcht dich nicht mehre,
und zu Zion, Gott wird weg nehmn
alls, was dich thut beschweren,
drum laß nicht lass werden dein Händ,
denn Gott hat sich zu dir gewendt,
daß er bei dir fort bleibe.

4 Er will dein starker Heiland sein
und sich über dich freuen,
sich gegen dir erzeigen fein,
freundlich all Gnad verneuen,
vergeben dir all deine Sünd
und richten an mit dir ein Bund,
daß du sollt ewig leben.

Wo ist ein solcher Gott wie du

Here is my translation of the faith & justification hymn, “Wo ist ein solcher Gott wie du” (Johann Ludwig Conrad Allendorf, d. 1774), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #387. Taking its first line from Micah 7:18, its focus is perhaps less justification and more, as Fischer categorizes it, “of the joy of the Lord.” He finds it in the Cöthen hymnal (1744), later in J. P. Lange’s (1843). The appointed melody is “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern.”

WHERE is a God like unto Thee?
Who givest those that weary be
Sweet rest beyond all measure.
Thy boundless depth of graciousness
Consumes the sea of heart-distress;
Forgiveness is Thy pleasure.
Jesus,
For us
Thou didst suffer,
Us to offer
Pardon ever,
As our Surety and Savior!

2 O Lord, our Righteousness, how high
His spirit shall be filled with joy
Who Thee in faith but knoweth;
Thou art his beauty, crown divine!
So that he perfectly doth shine,
And love within him gloweth:
Grant me
In Thee,
Sun of heaven,
To be given
Joy forever,
With Thy praise my sole endeavor.

3 O kind and blessed Prince of Peace,
Thou in Thy love wouldst never cease
To save Thy sons that wandered!
Our Mediator true Thou art,
Thou bindest what was torn apart,
What God and sinners sundered,
What bliss
Is this?
See, delighted,
Both united–
Grace supernal!
Jesus, Thou art Peace eternal!

4 O dearest Lamb! devoutly bent,
Thou tak’st my guilt and punishment,
On and Thy back it lieth;
Thou bleedest on the Cross’s tree,
Where unbeforeseen agony
Thy soul and body trieth;
From Thy
Wounds my
Life is flowing,
Grace bestowing—
Jubilation!
Here’s my peace and my salvation.

5 Immanuel, most good and kind,
My body, being, soul, and mind
Are filled with want and weakness!
Yet is Thy heart filled up with grace,
The vengeance due our lowly race
Thou holdest back in meekness:
Here I
See Thy
Love imparted,
Mother-hearted,
Sins forgiving
Daily, richly, as I’m living!

6 Grace over everything doth reign,
It breaks the devil’s bar and chain,
Doth law and sin devour;
Wouldst thou be free, then, and rejoice,
Receive this grace and Jesus’ voice,
And thou canst overpower
Terror,
Error,
Sin’s possessions,
Night’s transgressions—
Makes no matter—
All before God’s grace must scatter.

7 O Jesus, blood and water pour,
And thereby lessen more and more,
My dross so plain before Thee;
My Savior, Thou hast purchased me,
Both soul and body, painfully,
To Thee be all the glory!
Let me
Then be
Prideful never,
Purer ever,
Till I yonder
Worship Thee in sinless wonder.

GERMAN

Wo ist ein solcher Gott, wie du?
Du schaffst den Müden süße Ruh,
Ruh, die nicht zu ergründen.
Ein Abgrund der barmherzigkeit
verschlingt ein Meer voll Herzeleid,
du Herr vergiebst die Sünden.
Jesu, du, du
läßt dich würgen
als den Bürgen,
aller Sünden
mich auf ewig zu entbinden.

2 Herr, unsere Gerechtigkeit!
wie hoch wird dessen Geist erfreut,
der dich im Glauben kennet!
Du bist sein Schmuck, die Gottespracht,
die ihn vollkommen schöne macht,
die ihm das Herz entbrennet:
Laß mich
ewig,
Himmelssonne,
Seelenwonne,
dich genießen
und in deinem Lob zerfließen.

3 Holdselig süßer Friedefürst,
wie hat dich nach dem Heil gedürst
der abgewichnen Kinder!
Du stellest dich als Mittler dar,
verbindest, was getrennet war:
Gott und verdammte Sünder;
Freude,
beide
werden Eines:
ungemeines
Werk der Güte!
Jesu, du bist unser Friede!

4 O süßes Lamm! dein treuer Sinn
nimmt Schuld und Strafe von mir hin,
sie liegt auf deinem Rücken;
du blutest an des Kreuzes Pfahl,
da muß dich unerhörte Qual
nach Leib und Seele drücken;
diese
süße
Fluth der Gnaden
heilt den Schaden,
durch die Wunden
hab ich Heil und Frieden funden.

5 Mitleidender Immanuel!
es ist mein leben, Leib und Seel
voll Mängel und Gebrechen;
doch ist dein Herz auch voller Gnad,
willst weder Sünd, noch Missethat
am armen Staube rächen:
deine
reine
Mutterliebe
steht im Triebe,
hier im Leben
täglich reichlich zu vergeben!

6 Die Gnade führt das Regiment,
sie macht der Sclaverei ein End,
besiegt Gesetz und Sünden;
drum willst du frei und fröhlich sein,
laß Jesum und die Gnade ein,
so kannst du überwinden.
Seelen-
quälen,
Sündenkräfte,
Nachtgeschäfte,
all desgleichen
muß der starken Gnade weichen.

7 Gieb Jesu, Blut und Wasser her,
und nimm dadurch, je mehr und mehr,
die Schlacken recht herunter;
du hast mich dir, Immanuel,
gar theur erkauft mit Leid und Seel,
zum Preise deiner Wunder.
Kleiner,
reiner
muß ich werden
noch auf Erden,
bis ich droben
dich kann ohne Sünde loben.

Heut freue dich du Christen Schar

Here is my translation of Laurentii’s fourth hymn, “Heut freue dich du Christen Schar” (Evangelia melodica, 1700), the fourth for the Gospel on First Christmas Day. Its focus is the joy of the angelic tidings, the salvation of God, which is appropriated in repentance and thanksgiving. The appointed melody is “Nun freut euch, lieben Christen Gmein.”

REJOICE, O Christian flock, this day!

Send fear and anguish flying!

An angel now reveals the way

Where Christ the Lord is lying;

For Jesus hath been sent for you

And born this day an Infant new

To fill the world with gladness.

2 This joy to all the world is told,

As God intended truly,

While angels’ lips the joy unfold,

It is imparted fully

To those who will by faith alone

Claim this salvation for their own,

On nothing else depending.

3 This joy from godly grief we get,

From sorrow and repentance—

Repentance that hath no regret— (2 Cor. 7:10)

Nor is this joyful sentence

For ears that need not such relief,

But hearts contrite in holy grief;

Then peace and joy shall follow.

4 This joy they cannot grasp, who love

And seek but lusts unholy,

Yea, they must forfeit heav’n above

Whose minds are earthward solely;

They who in darkness dwell, not light,

Know not this holy joy aright:

This pearl no swine befitteth.

5 Yet truly from this joy no man

On earth is e’er excluded;

God’s love o’er all the world doth span,

Each land it hath intruded;

But when God’s plan is scorned by men,

Who live in sin’s benighted den,

This joy to them is hidden.

6 But thou, who lovest God’s dear Son

And hatest all transgression,

And mournest oft what thou hast done—

This joy is thy possession,

Which God hath had from heav’n proclaimed

This holy day so greatly famed;

In Him, therefore, be joyful!

7 This day, thou know’st, He did appear

To bring thee consolation;

Now canst thou serve Him without fear,

His joyful, new creation,

And so, among the angel host,

Of that great joy exulting boast

And praise thy God sincerely.

8 Sing out, my heart: To God on high

In heaven’s throne be glory,

That peace on earth may multiply

And all men hear the story

How in God’s pleasure they are found;

Now let my heart this praise resound:

To God on high be glory!

9 Rejoice, my heart, right fervently,

Thy bliss no longer stifle,

For on this day is joined with thee

The Sun of heaven joyful,

For God doth thee with peace provide

That now and ever shall abide,

Since Jesus is born for us.

10 Therefore, while blood yet stirs in thee,

Forget not thy thanksgiving!

Of Christian duty mindful be

As long as thou art living;

This is the task of hosts above:

A heart inflamed by holy love

Delights to praise God daily.

GERMAN

1 Heut freue dich, du Christen-Schar,

laß Furcht und Angst verschwinden,

ein Engel machet offenbar,

wo Jesus ist zu finden,

euch, euch ist Jesus auserkorn,

und von Maria heut geborn,

der ganzen Welt zur Wonne.

2 Die Freude wird der ganzen Welt

nach Gottes Rat und Willen

von einem Engel angemeldt;

doch will er sie erfüllen,

allein in denen, die dies Heil

im Glauben machen sich zu Teil

und ihm allein anhangen.

3 Es wird aus wahrer Reu und Leid,

die Freud in Gott geboren,

aus Reue, die niemand gereut,

drum gilt nicht vor den Ohren

die Freud allein, es muß das Herz

zerknirschet sein in REu und Schmerz,

so folget Fried und Freude.

4 Wer noch die Weltlust sucht und liebt

kann nicht die Freude fassen;

wer noch der Erden ich ergiebt,

der muß den Himmel lassen;

wer finster lebt und nicht im Licht,

der weiß von dieser Freude nicht,

die Perl ist nicht für Säuen.

5 Zwar wird kein Mensch von dieser Freud

auf Erden ausgeschlossen,

weil Gottes Liebe weit und breit

in alle Welt geflossen;

allein, weil man dies Heil veracht

und lebet in der Sündennacht,

so bleibt die Freud verborgen.

6 Du aber, der du Jesum liebst

und hassest deine Sünden,

auch dich darüber oft betrübst,

du kannst die Freude finden,

die Gott vom himmel melden läßt

an diesem heilgen Weinachtfest,

drum freue dich im Herren.

7 Du weißt gewiß, daß Jesus heut

zum Trost dir ist erschienen,

drum kannst du sein ohn Furcht erfreut

und Gott mit Freuden dienen

im Geist, und in der Engel Meng

die Freud erheben nach der Läng

und Gott von Herzen loben.

8 Stimm an, mein Herz: Gott sei die Ehr

im Himmelsthron und Höhen,

daß sich der Fried auf Erden mehr,

daß alle Menschen sehen,

daß sie sind Gottes Wohlgefalln,

drum laß mein Herz dies Lob erschalln:

Ehr sei Gott in der Höhe.

9 So freue dich recht inniglich,

mein Herz, und leb in Wonne,

weil heut mit dir vereinigt sich

die Himmels-Freudensonne,

weil Friede dir von Gott beschert,

die in der Zeit und ewig währt,

weil Jesus ist geboren.

10 Vergiß des Dankes nimmer nicht,

solang dein Blut sich reget,

gedenk an diese Christen Pflicht,

so oft dein Ader schläget,

dies ist der Engel Werk und Amt,

ein Herz, das von der Lieb entflammt,

preist täglich Gott mit Freuden.
