Da Sankt Johannes am Jordan

Here is my translation of the hymn “Da Sankt Johannes am Jordan,” also revised as “Da Johannes an dem Jordan” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Advent IV, a paraphrase of the Gospel from John 1. Gesius 1605 supplies us with the additional supplicatory stanza 7 as well as assigns the

WHEN at the Jordan John baptized
And preached, the Jews’ legation
Was sent to ask, Was he the Christ,
Foretold to save their nation?
Then answered Zacharias’ son,
I am not he, nor am I one
To claim a name so glorious.

2 They further asked, Art thou by name
That prophet called Elias?
He said, Not I (yet well could claim
That title great and pious.)
They asked: Art thou another, then?
No, saith he, I am not such men,
Their name doth not befit me.

3 Since thou art not the promised Seed,
And not the prophet holy,
Then tell us who thou art indeed,
And what men ought to call thee:
What dost thou of thine own self say?
That we to them who sent us may
An answer give unerring.

4 I call myself a voice of one
In desert places crying,
As written once by Amoz’ son,
To God’s high call replying:
Prepare ye for the Lord His way,
His road all straight and even lay;
His glory shall be coming.

5 They said: “Why dost thou baptize then,
If thou art not Messias,
Nor art a prophet unto men,
Nor art the great Elias?”
He said: “In water I baptize,
But One will Baptism realize
With fire and spirit rightly.

6 For after me comes presently
One greater far in glory,
Yea, and hath long preceded me,
Nor dare I call me worthy
The latchet of His shoes to loose;
He comes and brings us joyful news-
My God and Lord and Savior.

*7 O Lamb of God, Lord Jesus Christ,
To whom the Baptist pointed,
Thou art our Savior, praised and prized
By all Thy church anointed!
Oh, to the heav’nly fatherland
Bring us, dear Savior, by Thy hand,
And let us soon behold Thee!

tauft und predigt dem Volke,
die Jüden ein Legation
zu ihm sandten, die wollte
wissen, ob er Messias wär?
Nein, ich maß mich nicht an der Ehr,
sprach Zacharias Sohne.

2 Sie fragten weiter: Bist du denn
Helias der Prophete?
Nein, für den ich mich nicht bekenn,
wiewohl ichs billich thäte.
Bist du denn ein ander Prophet?
Nein, der Namen mir nicht zusteht,
für kein ich mich ausgebe.

3 Weil du nicht willt Messias sein,
auch kein Propheten geleten?
Sag uns dochs Amt und Wesen dein
für wen man dich soll{t} schelten,
was du selber hältest von dir, {Sag was du selber hältst…}
auf daß wieder antworten wir {auf daß antworten können wir}
den, die uns zu dir sandten. {die uns zu dir her…}

4 Ein Stimm, die in der Wüsten schreit,
mit Wahrheit ich mich nenne,
wie Esaïas von mir schreibt, {Wie denn von mir Elias…}
dafür ich mich bekenne.
Bereitet dem Herren sein Weg, {…Herrn seinen Weg}
und macht eben sein Steig und Steg,
sein Herrlichkeit wird kommen.

5 Sie sprachen: Warum täufst du denn,
weil du nicht bist Messias?
und willt auch gar kein Propheten
gelten, noch sein Helias?
Er sprach: Ich täuf in Wasser schlecht;
einer ist, der wird taufen recht
mit Feuer und seim Geiste.

6 Nach mir so wird er kommen schier,
jetzt werdt ihr ihn nicht kennen,
und ist doch lang gewest vor mir,
ich durft mich nicht werth nennen,
daß ich ein Riemen an seim Schuch
auflösen sollt, den er antrug,
er ist mein Gott und Herre.

*7 O Gottes Lamm, Herr Jesu Christ,
auf den Johannes weiset,
unser Seligmacher du bist,
darum dein Kirch dich preiset:
Hilf uns ins rechte Vaterland,
du treuer Mittler und Heiland,
