Here is my translation of the hymn, “Lernt, lieben Leut, vom Herren Christ” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XVIII, with title: “Of the Greatest Commandment in the Law.”
Mel.: Dies sind die heilgen zehn Gebot.
DEAR people, learn from Jesus hands
Which is the greatest of commands
Giv’n in the Law on Mount Sinai:
That one might e’er live thereby.
Kyrieleis!
2 When of this thing the scribe inquires,
Is Christ to him and others there
In His own person heard to say,
That we should live in this way:
Kyrieleis!
3 Thou shalt with all thy heart and soul
And mind, yea, with thy being whole
Love God thy Lord. The greatest this
Of all commandments it is.
Kyrieleis!
4 The second’s like the first, saith He:
Thy neighbor love as well as thee.
This is whole of prophets’ lore,
Nor doth the Law ask for more.
Kyrieleis!
5 This is the core, as Jesus knows,
All mankind at its bidding goes
And all our race thereto is bound,
Its house in all lands is found.
Kyrieleis!
6 Whoever would serve God therein,
Let him so walk, avoiding sin,
His neighbor as his own self love,
As God wills in heav’n above.
Kyrieleis!
7 What in thy place He bids thee do,
Dost thou prove to thy neighbor too,
God will the same receive and own,
As if to Him it were done.
Kyrieleis!
8 Thou preacher, teach the people so:
To them a good example show,
Let proper fruits of faith appear,
Then art thou His servant dear.
Kyrieleis!
9 Thou prince and lord, thus bear the sword:
Do justice, curb the wicked horde,
That godly honor, peace, and rest
With joy may fill all men’s breast.
Kyrieleis!
10 Ye parents, raise your girl and boy
And servants all in your employ,
In discipline and truth divine;
Your household rule well and fine.
Kyrieleis!
11 Be to your godly preachers true,
Obey them and your rulers too,
To parents also honor show,
For God’s decree biddeth so.
Kyrieleis!
12 Ye rich, be to the needy free,
Ye poor, toil well and faithfully,
Who alms receiveth, let him say:
God’s blessings on you, I pray!
Kyrieleis!
13 Who treateth not his neighbor so
Hates God and is His mortal foe,
And is the devil’s slave as well;
For what reward? Naught but hell!
Kyrieleis!
14 From this Christ Jesus us defend,
His Spirit rule heart, soul, and mind,
To love our neighbor and to do
As our Lord’s own servant true.
Kyrieleis!

GERMAN
Lernt, lieben Leut, vom Herren Christ,
was sei das vornehmst und das größt
Gebot gegeben im Gesetz,
daß man darnach lebe stets.
Kyrieleis.
2 Als solchs der Schriftgelehrte fragt,
Jesus zu ihm und andern sagt,
in eigener Person zu hörn
das Leben auch so zu führn.
Kyrieleis.
3 Du sollt lieben Gott deinen Herrn,
durchaus von ganzen Herzen gern,
von ganzer Seelen und Gemüth,
dies ist das größte Gebot.
Kyrieleis.
4 Das ander ist dem ersten gleich,
dein Nächsten lieb so wohl als dich.
Das ist aller Propheten Lehr,
das ganz Gesetz will nichts mehr.
Kyrieleis.
5 Das ist der Kern, wies Christus weiß,
gebunden ist an sein Geheiß,
aller Menschen Geschlecht durchaus,
die ganze Welt ist sein Haus.
Kyrieleis.
6 Wer darinn Gotte dienen will,
der richte sich nach dieesem Ziel,
sein Nächsten liebe gleich wie sich,
so wills Gott im Himmelreich.
Kyrieleis.
7 Was er in deinem Stand dich heißt,
wenn du deim Nächsten das beweist,
so wills Gott von dir nehmen an,
als wär es ihm selbst gethan.
Kyrieleis.
8 Du Prediger, das Volk so lehr,
dein gut Exempel geh ihm für,
des rechten Glaubens Frucht erschein,
sein lieber Knecht wirst du sein,
Kyrieleis.
9 Führe den Schwert, du Fürst und Herr,
daß recht zugeh, dem Bösen wehr,
daß gottselig Ehr, Fried und Ruh
dich und dein Volk mache froh.
Kyrieleis.
10 Ihr Eltern, zieht also die Kind,
auch euer unterthan Gesind,
daß Zucht gelernt, und Gott erkannt,
regier den häußlichen Stand.
Kyrieleis.
11 Seid Gottseligen Predigern
gehorsam mit den Oberherrn,
den Eltern auch ihr Ehr beweist,
wie Gott solchs ordnet und heißt.
Kyrieleis.
12 Ihr Reich gebt den Armen frei,
ihr Armen arbeitet getreu,
wer Almosen geneußt, der sag,
Gott mehr euch Haus, Hof und Hab.
Kyrieleis.
13 Wer seinem Nächsten nicht so thut,
der ist sein Feind und hasset Gott,
dem Teufel dienst mit Leib und Seel;
was wird sein Lohn sein? Die Hell.
Kyrieleis.
14 Davor uns Jesus Christ behüt,
sein Geist regier Herz, Seel und Muth,
zu lieben unsern Nächsten recht,
als unsers Herrn wahre Knecht.
Kyrieleis.
