Das größeste Gebot

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das größeste Gebot” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia Melodica, the second hymn for Trinity XVIII.

Mel.: Nun danket alle Gott.

OF all commands the first

 is: Love thy God sincerely

The second, like it, is

 to love thy neighbor dearly!

With all thy strength and pow’r

 to love thy God indeed

And neighbor as thyself—

to this, O man, take heed!

2 Oh, that each mortal heart

 might live in love unfeigning,

And find its soul’s delight

 in love without all staining!

How diff’rent then the world

 would be, and envy cease,

And hatred, war, and strife

 be turned to blessed peace!

3 But sinful wrath proceeds

 from Satan’s jaws infernal;

Who as the dragon snuffs

 the fire of love supernal

Such wrath doth never good,

 nor what to God is right;

Still doth the mortal race

 proceed to strive and fight.

4 O Jesus, Son of God,

 of David’s tribe descended,

Unite us in thy love,

 A band by Thee befriended;

Us in Thy kingdom place,

 O mighty God and Lord,

Wrest us from sinful wrath

 and from th’ accursèd horde.

5 With heart and mouth and tongue

we call Thee in the Spirit

The Lord of all the world,

who gained for us love’s merit

Which Adam lost of old,

 Thy passion, death, and blood

Hath freed us from distress

and brought us peace with God.

6 O Flesh of our own flesh,

Bone of our bones in heaven!

oh, let Thy love and grace

 be to us mortals given,

Yea, let Thy mighty pow’r

be sent from God’s right hand

To us on earth below,

 and known in every land!

7 When Thou Thine enemies

 A footstool for Thee makest

Greet us in kindness sweet

 Whom Thou Thy siblings makest;

Let us in faith and love

 greet Thee with fealty’s kiss,

Lest Thou be angry, and

 we perish, far from bliss.

8 Greet us meek as a lamb

 when like a lion furious

Thy roaring shall be heard

 at Thy descending glorious,

When Thou with mighty pow’r

 shalt wage Thy final war,

Take us in mercy to

 Thy glory evermore.

9 Then will we joyfully

in streets of gold be singing,

And in Thy mother’s house

let praise to Thee be ringing,

And worship Thee, Lord Christ,

 Thy crown upon Thy brow,

For none, O Lamb of God,

 Is worthy, none but Thou.

GERMAN

Das größeste Gebot

ist Gott von Herzen lieben,

das ander ist dem gleich

am Nächsten Liebe üben,

Gott lieben überall

aus aller Kräften Macht,

den Nächsten als dich selbst,

dies nimm, o Mensch, in Acht.

2 Ach, daß ein jedes Herz

in solcher Liebe stünde,

und seine Seelenlust

in reiner Liebe fünde,

wie würd es auf der Welt

weit anders gehen zu

und aller Neid und Streit

verwandeln sich in Ruh.

3 Der Zorn ist angestammt

aus Satans Höllenrachen,

und alle Liebe ist

verloschen durch den Drachen,

der Zorn thut nimmer gut,

noch was für Gott ist recht,

doch lebt in Zank und Streit

das menschliche Geschlecht.

4 O Jesu, Gottes Sohn,

aus Davids Stamm entsprossen,

ach, mach uns deiner Lieb

holdselige Genossen,

versetz uns in dein Reich,

o großer Herr und Gott,

und reiß uns aus dem Zorn

und der verdammten Rott.

5 Wir nennen dich im Geist

mit Herzenmund und Zungen

den Herren aller Welt,

der uns die Lieb errungen,

die Adam hat verscherzt,

dein Leiden, Blut und Tod,

hat uns mit Gott versöhnt

und frei gemacht von Noth.

6 O Fleisch von unserm Fleisch

o Bein von unsern Beinen,

laß deine Lieb und Huld

uns Sterblichen erscheinen,

laß deine große Kraft

von Gottes Rechten Hand

uns werden zugewandt

und aller Welt bekannt.

7 Wenn du bald legen wirst

zum Schemel deiner Füße

die Feinde, so erschein

uns freundlich, mild und süße,

laß uns in Glaubenskraft

und Liebe küssen dich,

daß du nicht zürnst, und wir

umkommen jämmerlich.

8 Erschein uns als ein Lamm

sanftmüthig, wenn dein Brüllen

wird wie ein Löw im Grimm

die ganze Welt erfüllen,

wenn du mit großer Kraft

wirst kommen in den Streit,

so nimm uns gnädig auf

in deine Herrlichkeit.

9 So wollen wir den Lob

auf Salems güldnen Straßen

in deiner Mutter Haus

mit Freuden schallen lassen,

und dich in deiner Kron

anbeten, o Herr Christ,

der du, als Gottes Lamm,

allein es würdig bist.
