Ach Gott vom Himmel sieh darein, / und hilf doch deiner Herde

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ach Gott vom Himmel sieh darein, / und hilf doch deiner Herde” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Trinity VIII, a pastiche of Luther’s paraphrase of Psalm 12, retaining the first line of each stanza creating new text tailored to the themes of the Sunday Gospel. For this version I use Winkworth’s original first lines (pre-TLH) except for stanza 2, which is based directly on the German.

Mel.: Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein.

O GOD, from heav’n look down and see,

And help Thy congregation,

Lest, small and frail, it utterly

Be drowned in tribulation.

Their state is piteous to behold,

And daily grow more strong and bold

The prophets of Belial.

2 They nothing teach but false deceit,

And with their semblance pious

Their lies adorn as true and meet,

And with their guile belie us.

A sheepskin garment outwardly

Must cloak and veil their villainy

And wolfish heart within them.

3 May God root out all heresy,

And vile adulteration

By which they twist God’s Word, and we

Are turned from our salvation.

False teachers with great fury press,

And all their pride and wickedness

Is greater now than ever.

4 Therefore, saith God, I must arise,

And quash this evil surely;

I will My Word free from their lies

And have it taught most purely

My Word shall shortly judge and damn

Each antichrist that deals his sham

Both spiritual and worldly.

5 As silver sev’n times furnace-tried

Doth pass examination,

So faith intact must still abide

Through grief and tribulation

As through this vale of tears we fly.

Yea, rather it is proved thereby,

Since God’s Word doth it strengthen.

6 O God, preserve it pure and free,

And needful grace be giving,

That we therein may steadfast be

Throughout our earthly living.

Give to Thy church repose and peace,

But Satan curb and make to cease,

With all his horde satanic.

Die Welt ist falsch, Getreuer Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn “Die Welt ist falsch, Getreuer Gott” (B. Schmolck, 1712), from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, part 1, for Trinity VIII, with title “The Nature of Doves and Serpents.”

Mel.: Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit

THE world is false, O faithful God,
With prophets vast in number
Who mock true doctrine by their fraud
And souls to death encumber.
Here, poison of deceit is brewed,
There, Scripture is with teachings crude
And lies of men corrupted.

2 Now all too oft we sheepskin find,
The faults of men concealing;
In holy dress of angel-kind
False teachers come appealing,
Of heaven preaching near and far,
And yet, alas, the gate unbar
That to damnation leadeth.

3 When they a simple soul have caught,
The wolf his claws then showeth;
The sheep is snared and soon is brought
From grass that life bestoweth
And to those meadows made to go,
Where pois’nous herbs and mildew grow,
And perisheth forever.

4 O Christ, equip my mind and sense
With holy wisdom’s armor,
To make for truth a bold defense
Against the guiling charmer;
And where the wolves in sheepskin go,
Grant that I may them rightly know,
Their evil fruit perceiving.

5 No grape appears upon the thorn,
No fig the thistle giveth;
The tree corrupted and forlorn
No goodly fruit conceiveth,
False teachers’ vile iniquities—
These are the fruit of rotten trees,
Fit only for the furnace.

6 Where’er the Lord’s Word is despised
And rules of men maintainèd;
Where selfish glory most is prized,
And Jesus’ blood profanèd;
Where men with grace’s treasures jest
And souls from their salvation wrest–
’Tis there such fruit aboundeth.

7 Oh, let my touchstone be Thy Word,
All things thereto comparing,
And earnestly forsake the herd
Of wolves with murd’rous bearing;
Give to Thy church help from above,
That it may not be as a dove
Torn by this beast to pieces.

8 New sects and spirits rise each day
And, striving, bring disaster;
Oh, then preserve and guard my way,
My Leader and my Master,
That I may keep that course aright
That gives me utter truth and light
Through Thy dear Spirit’s teaching.

9 Let me avoid all outward show,
The Christian heart defiling;
Lest, Christian named, I be not so,
Nor wear the sheepskin guiling!
Whoever saith Lord, Lord! alone,
And yet Thy will it never done—
He bringeth forth fruit rotten.

10 There is prepared a fiery pit
Where worthless trees are burnèd,
And Thou wilt from the hypocrite,
Upon that Day be turnèd.
Then grant that all hypocrisy
May banished be far, far from me,
And let me turn back never!

GERMAN
Die Welt ist falsch, Getreuer Gott,
Sie stecket voll Propheten,
Die durch der wahren Lehre spott
Die seelen wollen tödten:
Da kochet man Verführungs Gifft,
Und dort verkehrt man deine schrifft
Mit Menschentand und Lehren.

2 Das Schaffskleid wird itzt sehr gemein,
Man schmincket seine Mängel,
Die falschen Lehrer gehn herein
In Heiligkeit der Engel,
sie wenden lauter Himmel vor,
Und öffnen leider! doch das Thor
Zum Abgrund in die Hölle.

3 Wenn sie die Einfalt nun berückt,
Da zeigt der Wolff die Klauen,
Das arme Schaf, das er bestrickt,
Verliehrt die Lebens-Auen,
Indem es solche Weide kriegt,
Worauf nur Gift und Mehlthau liegt,
Davon es ewig stirbet.

4 O Jesu, wapne meinen Sinn,
Mit Klugheit der Gerechten,
Daß ich geschickt und freudig bin
Die Warheit zu verfechten;
Und hat der Wolf ein Schafskleid an,
So gib, daß ich ihn kennen kan
An seinen bösen Früchten.

5 Die Trauben trägt kein Dornenstrauch,
Die Distel keine Feigen,
Man kan von faulen Bäumen auch
Nicht gutte Früchte zeigen:
Der falschen Lehrer böse Zucht
Ist eines faulen Baumes Frucht,
Der in die Gluth gehöret.

6 Wo man des Herren Wort veracht,
Und Menschensatzung lehret;
Wo man nach eigner Ehre tracht,
Und CHristi Blutt entehret;
Wo man mit Gnadenschätzen spielt,
Das Heil der armen Seelen stielt,
Da, da sind solche Früchte.

7 Ach laß mich alles an dein Wort,
Als den Probierstein streichen,
Und dieser Wölfe Seelenmord
Mit allem Ernst entweichen.
Steh deiner gantzen Kirchen bei,
Daß sie nicht eine Taube sei,
Die dieses Thier zerreisset.

8 Stehn immer neue Secten auf,
Und neue Rottengeister;
Ach so bewahre meinen Lauf,
Mein Führer und mein Meister.
Daß mir kein ander Weg beliebt,
Als der mir Licht uñ Warheit giebt,
Durch deines Geistes Lehre.

9 Laß mich auch selbst den falschen Schein
Im Christenthume meiden:
Ein Christe heißen und nicht sein,
Heist, sich ins Schaf verkleiden.
Wer nur Herr! Herr! alleine spricht,
Und thut doch deinen Willen nicht,
Der träget faule Früchte.

10 Ach dort ist Feuer zugericht,
Wo faule Bäume brennen,
Und du willst keinen Heuchler nicht
An jenem Tage kennen.
Drumb gieb, daß alle Heuchelei
Sehr weit von mir verbannet sei,
So darf ich nicht entweichen.

Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort . . . Du siehest ja wie immerdar

Here is my translation of the hymn “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort / . . . Du siehest ja wie immerdar” (E. Neumeister, 1702), appointed in the author’s Zugang zum Gnadestuhl for Trinity VIII. In accordance with Neumeister’s predilection to express his love for and familiarity with Lutheran chorales, he borrows without alteration the first two lines from the later version of Luther’s hymn, “Erhalt uns Herr, bei deinem Wort / und steure deiner Feinde Mord,” and afterward makes subtle references here and there to other parts of that hymn. In st. 7, Sacramentarian Enthusiasts are included in the ranks of those enemies. To prevent confusion, I have opted not to follow the usual English rendering of the first line “Lord, keep us steadfast in Thy Word,” though the reference is certainly still clear as originally intended.

Mel.: Vater unser im Himmelreich.

PRESERVE us in Thy Word, O Lord,
And curb Thy foes’ destroying sword!
For surely Thou art well aware
How heretics and devils e’er
With all their strength and pow’r arise
To strip us of our soul’s great prize.

2 We are not worthy of the grace,
That Thy dear hearth and dwelling-place
Should still our consolation be—
Th’ ingratitude is plain to see
With which Thy people Thee appall,
Who are called Evangelical:

3 And yet, O God, we dare to pray
For Jesus’ sake, spare us today!
For this concerns the Gospel’s fame,
Yea, and the glory of Thy name,
Which is belittled by the foe,
Who nothing of Thy truth will know.

4 Although the faithful host be small,
There are at least some ten in all
Who are true Christians in Thy sight.
And even if this host be slight,
Yet, Father, Thou the gap canst fill
With countless infant children still.

5 Abide with us for their sake, Lord,
Thy fount of grace let still be poured
Forever on us far and wide
In purity unfalsified.
For nothing but Thy Word alone
Can as our soul’s repast be known.

6 We know the Antichrist is home
Amid the papacy in Rome.
Oh, God, what price would he not pay
To take the Gospel clean away
And leave it in the dust again?
Wherefore His craft and pow’r restrain!

7 Still other lying sects invade
And would have us their brothers made.
Ah, by Thy mighty pow’r, dear God
Defend us from their brotherhood,
Who Jesus’ testament pervert
And teach vile error to men’s hurt.

8 And since the devil makes such use
Of piety and guile profuse,
Lay bare His wickedness and strife,
And grant that here our course of life
May be sincerely good, and ne’er
A pietistic substance share.

9 O God, upon the erring blind
And those seduced in heart and mind
To false religion, mercy have,
Through Christ Thy Son, who came to save;
Convert them by Thy Spirit, Lord,
Who doth to men true faith afford.

10 Thy Word doth our true light abide;
Who follows this turns not aside.
Thereby the darkness of death’s night
Is beautified and rendered bright.
So doth its brilliance light our way
To heaven’s blest, eternal day.

GERMAN

Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort,
und steure deiner Feinde Mord.
Du siehest ja, wie immerdar,
der Teufel und der Ketzer Schaar,
aus allen Kräften sich bemühn,
den Seelenschatz uns zu entziehn.

2 Der Gnade sind wir zwar nicht werth,
daß uns dein Feuer und dein Herd
noch länger soll zum Troste sein.
Der Undank ist fast allgemein,
den dir dein Volk dafür erweist,
das gleichwohl Evangelisch heißt.

3 Ach aber, ach, wir bitten noch:
um Christi willen, schone doch!
Es gehet (ach! gedenke dran!)
die Ehre deines Nahmens an.
Die wird ja durch den Feind geschändt,
der deine Wahrheit nicht erkennt.

4 Ist gleich die Zahl der Frommen klein;
so werden doch noch Zehen sein,
die wahre Christen vor dir sind.
Wenn sich auch hieran Mangel findt,
so sind, du lieber Vater, ja
viel tausend kleine Kinder da.

5 Um derer willen bleib bei uns.
Die Quelle deines Gnadenbrunns
ergieße sich noch fernerweit
in unverfälschter Lauterkeit.
Denn nichts, als nur dein Wort allein,
kann unsrer Seelen Labsal sein.

6 Wir kennen wohl den Antichrist,
und was das Römsche Pabsthum ist.
Ach Gott! was gäbe der nicht drum,
wenn er dein Evangelium
von neuem hätt in Staub gebracht?
So stürze seine List und Macht.

7 Auch andre Secten schleichen ein,
die gerne wollen Brüder sein.
Ach lieber Gott, durch deine Kraft,
behüt uns für der Brüderschaft,
die Christi Testament verkehrt,
und andern groben Irrsal lehrt.

8 Und da der Teufel in der Welt
sich auch durch Frömmigkeit verstellt,
so decke seine Bosheit auf,
und gieb, daß unser Lebenslauf
von Herzen fromm, und nie darbei
kein Pietistisch Wesen sei.

9 Ach! derer, die verblendt und blind,
und durch Betrug verführet sind
zu irriger Religion,
erbarme dich durch deinen Sohn.
Bekehre sie durch deinen Geist,
der sie zum wahren Glauben weist.

10 Dein Wort ist unser Lebens Licht.
Wer diesem folgt, der irret nicht.
Die Finsternis der Todesnacht
wird hell und schön dadurch gemacht.
Und also leuchtet uns sein Schein
bis in den lieben Himmel nein.

Wir danken dir von Herzen sehr

Here is my translation of the prayer hymn “Wir danken dir von Herzen sehr” (B. Ringwald) based on the Gospel for the VIII. Sunday after Trinity, Matthew 7, and set to the tune “Ach Gott vom Himmel, sie darein.”

LORD Christ, we thank Thee heartily
That Thou to us hast given
The Gospel doctrine pure and free
From all polluting leaven!
Sustain us in its light, we pray,
And never let it fade away
Nor leave us in the darkness.

2 Help us to walk as sons of light,
Within its glow abiding,
Not like the nightshade, gleaming bright
While bitter poison hiding;
Help us our faith indeed to prove
With virtue’s holy fruits of love,
As much as we are able.

3 Good shepherds for Thy Church provide
And crown them with Thy blessing,
That from their gaze no wolves may hide
Though skins of lamb possessing;
Let not their cunning craft and guile,
Which they disguise, Thy flock defile,
But let Thy servants warn us.

4 Help us discern the faithless hound,
The spirit smooth and lying,
By Scripture’s clear and solid ground,
His paws thereby espying,
Which he knows well how to conceal
With kindly words, with false appeal,
And with a fair appearance.

5. All haughty teachers, Lord, restrain,
Who love their aberration,
That they may never break in twain
Thy dear-bought congregation;
Restrain them with a mighty hand,
Like Arius put to shame their band,
All heresies confounding.

GERMAN

Wir danken dir von Herzen sehr,
Herr Christ, dieweil wir leben,
daß du uns hast die reine Lehr
des Evangeli geben,
und bitten, wollst uns bei dem Licht
erhalten und dasselbig nicht
verdunkelt lassen werden.

2 Hilf, daß wir in demselben Schein
als Lichtes Kinder wanken,
nicht mit dem Maul nur Christen sein
wie schlimme Wasserranken,
sondern den Glauben immerdar
beweisen mit den Früchten klar
soviel wir immer mögen.

3 Gib fromme Hirten deiner Herd,
tu sie gebenedeien,
daß sie des Wolfes arg Gebärd
in seinem Pelz beschreien
und uns vor seiner Tück und List,
die heimisch und verborgen ist,
mit allen Treuen warnen.

4 Hilf auch, daß wir den falschen Hund,
den glatten Geist der Lügen,
nach deines hellen Wortes Grund
sein selbest richten mügen
und seine Tatzen spüren bald,
die er mit freundlicher Gestalt
recht artig weiß zu bergen.

5 Treib all vermessne Lehrer ein,
die gern und willig irren:
Auf daß sie dein erkauft Gemein
nicht spalten noch verwirren:
Wehr ihnen, Herr, mit starker Hand
und mach sie vor der Welt zu Schand
wie Arrium den Ketzer.
