Von dir, o treuer Gott

Here is my translation of the Christian concord hymn, “Von dir, o treuer Gott” (Anon., 1740?), in GGELB #408 with melody assignment “O Gott, du frommer Gott,” and ascription to the Hanover Gsb. It does not appear in Fischer’s lexicon. I find its earliest instance indeed in the Hanover Gsb 1740, again in eds. 1745 and 1759, concurrently with the Electoral Palatinate Gsb (Ref.).

 

FROM Thee, O faithful God,
Are peace and cocord given;
Thou graciously didst come
To give us peace from heaven,
And concord dost reward,
For ’tis most dear to Thee.
Thou teachest how we here
Should live in harmony.

2 Therefore to Thee we pray
Thy Spirit’s gift to send us,
That He may hearts of peace
And concord ever lend us;
Grant that we all as one
May in the good agree;
Then shall we reap the fruit
Of peace abundantly.

3 Let us each other serve
As balms of consolation,
That all the sick at heart,
Weighed down by tribulation,
May in their neighbor find
Relief and remedy,
And none his brother scorn,
Nor view disdainfully.

4 Let us in unity
Be bound to one another
And patience practice e’er
And mercy show our brother.
Among Thy people, Lord,
Let concord’s flow’r increase,
Till, leaving war and strife,
We reach eternal peace.

Von dir, o treuer Gott!
muß Fried und Eintracht kommen,
der du uns gnädiglich
zum Frieden aufgenommen.
Dir ist die Eintracht lieb,
und du belohnst sie wohl,
und lehrest, wie man hie
recht einig leben soll.

2 Drum flehen wir zu dir
um deines Geistes Gabe,
daß jeder unter uns
ein friedlich Herze habe:
Gib, daß wir allesamt
im Guten eing sein;
so sammeln wir gesamt
die Frucht des Friedens ein.

3 Laß eins dem andern stets
zum edlen Balsam werden,
daß ein bedrängtes Herz
in allerlei Beschwerden,
von seinem Nächsten Trost
und Hilfe kommen seh,
und daß ein Bruder ja
den andern nicht verschmäh.

4 Laß uns in Einigkeit
stets bei einander wohnen,
und duld uns allezeit
mit gnädigem Verschonen:
laß unter deinem Volk
die Eintracht herrlich blühn,
bis wir aus Krieg und Streit
zum ewgen Frieden ziehn.
