Wir danken dir, o höchster Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn of thanks for peace, “Wir danken dir, o höchster Gott” (Martin Wandersleben, d. 1668), in ELGB#448, first appearing in the Schleusingen Gsb 1692 anonymously and in Gotha Gsb with cipher “M. W.,” indicating Wandersleben, the author of “Heut fangen wir in Gottes Nam.” The appointed melody is “Aus tiefer Noth.”

 

WE give Thee thanks, O God most High,
That Thou hast heard and blest us
With peace at last, to rectify
The warfare that distressed us,
And most of all hast here maintained
Thy blessed Word pure and unstained,
Thy Baptism, and Thy Supper.

2 Help us to use this time of peace,
Lord, to Thy praise and glory,
And not our chast’ning to increase
With brazen sin before Thee.
In peace and rest Thy church uphold,
In health and life keep young and old.
Amen, through Christ our Savior!

und nach der großen Krieges-Noth
den lieben Fried bescheret,
auch sonderlich Dein liebes Wort,
behalten rein an diesem Ort
samt beiden Sakramenten.

2 Hilf, das wir diese Friedenszeit
gebrauchen Dir zu Ehren,
und nicht durch Unbußfertigkeit
die Strafen wider mehren:
erhalt Dein Kirch in Fried und Ruh
Gesundheit, Nahrung gieb dazu,
durch Jesum Christum, Amen.
