All Obrigkeit Gott setzet

Here is my translation of the hymn on the Estate of Authorities, “All Obrigkeit Gott setzet” (Anon., from 1657), in ELGB #377. Fischer states: “This little-disseminated hymn is found in the Hanover Gsb 1657, Bremen Gsb 1690, [with title] “Of Obligation to Authorities”, in the Schlechtiger (Berlin) hymnal 1704, Halle from 1834 on. The two closing stanzas in Halberstadt Gsb 1712ff. marked with asterisks appear to be an addition.” I offer as an alternate explanation that these are the supplicatory stanzas, whereas the foregoing are the didactic. I also find it in Stade Gsb 1682 and Crüger’s Praxis Pietatis Melica 1693. The appointed melody is “Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn.”

 

AUTHORITIES God giveth
As His own ordinance.
Who them not so receiveth
Awaits dread punishments.
To honor them is fitting
Who in God’s place are sitting:
Whom therefore He calls gods.

2 When in their office ever
They orders give, as right,
We to obey endeavor.
If they cause grief or fright,
They soon can be unblinded
By God, and so reminded
That they are under Him.

3 Some day at God’s commanding
They shall a reck’ning give,
Before God’s courtroom standing,
How they and theirs did live,
How they their people lovèd,
And as a shepherd provèd
To their entrusted flock.

4 Through them God us provideth
Peace, safety, and defense;
Their people free abideth
From foes’ belligerence.
So that all who would grieve us
E’en so in peace must leave us:
This is the ruler’s work.

5 To them fair tax is given,
And faithul service done;
Their office under heaven,
Upon these aids doth run;
Thus we, obedient, humble,
Do not complain or grumble,
But give them willingly.

6 Should man his service render
Alone to please the eye
(lest he be an offender)
His heart is false thereby.
That conscience though is steady,
That at all times is ready
To show them faithful love.

7 That we our rulers treasure
According to Thy Word
And do their will with pleasure,
Grant us the pow’r, O Lord!
As limbs let us be bearing
Nor fight the head, thus caring
And watching over us!

8 We thank Thee, God, for giving
Our Christian rulers dear;
Sustain them long in living,
And always in Thy fear;
Grant strength and grace to handle
Their work, that sin and scandal
May be by them repelled.

All Obrigkeit Gott setzet,
als seine Ordnung ein;
wer sie dafür nicht schätzet,
wird nicht ohn Strafe sein.
Man soll in Ehren halten,
die Gottes Stell verwalten,
der sie drum Götter nennt.

2 Was sie Amts halber heißen,
muß man nicht weigern sich,
Gehorsams sich befleißen;
wärn sie gleich wunderlich.
gott kann ihr Herz bald lenken,
damit sie doch bedenken,
daß sie sein unter Ihm.

3 Und daß sie von dem Leben,
was hier durch sie geschicht,
Gott Rechenschaft einst geben
dort müssen vor Gericht;
auf daß von ihnen werde
ihr anvertraute Heerde
geliebet und gepflegt.

4 Durch sie uns Gott verleihet,
Ruh, Sicherheit und Schutz:
wir sind durch sie befreiet
vor böser Leute Trutz.
Das alle, die uns hassen,
zu Fried uns dennoch lassen,
das schafft die Obrigkeit.

5 Daher ihr auch gebühret
Schoß, Schatzung, Dienst und Pflicht:
denn was ihr Amt mitführet,
durch solches wird verrichtt;
und soll mans auf Begehren,
ohn Murren und Beschwerden,
entrichten williglich.

6 Wenn man zu Dienst nur stehet
vor Augen und zum Schein;
(das man der Straf entgehet)
da ist das Herz nicht rein.
Der hat ein gut Gewissen,
der stets dahin beflissen,
das er die Obern liebt.

das wir nach Deinem Wort,
den Obern zu gefallen,
sein willig immerfort;
daß wir als treue Glieder,
dem Haupt nicht sein zuwider,
das für uns sorgt und wacht.

christliche Obrigkeit,
erhalt sie lang im leben
und Deiner Furcht allzeit.

daß Sünde, Schand und Shade
