Here is my translation of the New Year / Circumcision hymn, “Frohlockt, lobsinget Gott” (Johann Andreas Cramer, d. 1788), in NEGB #24 in 7 stanzas. There is no entry in Fischer. The earliest reference for this curious hymn, which notably combines the Circumcision with an appeal for the Jews, I find in the Neues ev. Gsb of Regensburg (1783), #72, p. 105ff., in 10 stanzas; also in 10 stanzas in Frankfurt/Main Gsb (1791), both Rationalist hymnals aimed at moral and intellectual improvement. A reworked version appears in the Augsburg Gsb (1794) #101, in 6 stanzas (orig. 1, 2, 6, 4, 7, 9) with variations generally of more Christian character omitting the more Rationalist language. Württemberg (1793) likewise has a 6-stanza form with final stanza (orig. 9) beginning “O Jesu, lasse doch…” None appears with attribution. Cramer’s name is given to the text in Johann Friedrich Johannsen’s Historisch-Biographisch Nachrichten (1802), p. 355. The Henkels’ hymnal includes from the original Rationalist 10-stanza form only the first 7 stanzas (thus simultaneously avoiding much of the dubious passages). I have included some alternate lines and the stanza 9 variants, which are an improvement. The appointed melody is “O Gott, du frommer Gott.”
To earth is come the Savior,
His own dear Abraham
And Jacob to deliver.
The Son in truth confirmed
What God for man decreed,
When on the eighth day He
Was suffered thus to bleed.
2 He is the God of Jews
And every Gentile nation
The Son of God for both
Atones and wins salvation.
