OUR God is Love; and he that dwells
In love, as God’s command compels,
In God abideth, good or ill,
And God in him abideth still.
2 Herein hath love its perfect way,
And boldness in the Judgment Day,
For as He is, so too are we
Here in this world continually.
3 Fear cannot in this love be found,
For fear is e’er with torment bound;
But love out of the loving heart
All fear doth cast and bid depart.
4 Then let us love God ceaselessly,
Who loved us from eternity.
If any man say, I love God,
But harbor hate, it is a fraud.
5 He is a liar, full of shame,
Unworthy of the Christian name,
Who little knows of love and hate,
Which bear no friendship intimate.
6 For he that loves his brother not
Whom he hath seen, in lies is caught
When he saith “I love God,” whom he
Hath not seen. ’Tis hypocrisy!
7 We this commandment have, that he
Who loves God with sincerity,
His Christian brother too should love,
And Christian love unceasing prove.

Gott ist die Liebe, wer bekleibt
beständig in der Liebe bleibt,
der bleibt in Gott in Lieb und Leid,
Gott bleibt in ihm zu jeder Zeit.
2 Das ist der Liebe Völligkeit,
und im Gericht die Freudigkeit,
denn gleich wie er ist, sind auch wir,
in dieser Welt stets für und für.
3 Furcht kann nicht in der Liebe sein,
denn alle Furcht hat Angst und Pein,
die LIebe tribt die Furcht hinaus,
aus dem liebreichen Herzenshaus.
4 Laßt uns Gott lieben jederzeit,
der uns geliebt von Ewigkeit,
so jemand spricht, ich liebe Gott,
und ist voll Haß, der wird zu Spott.
5 Weil er ein grober Lügner ist,
und nicht werth, daß er heißt ein Christ,
der Lieb und Haß nicht viel verstehn,
die nimmermehr beisammen stehn.
6 Denn wer den Bruder liebet nicht,
den er noch sieht, ob er gleich spricht:
ich liebe Gott, wie kann das sein,
den er nicht sieht, der Heuchel Schein.
7 Wir haben ja klar das Gebot,
wer herzlich liebet seinen Gott,
daß der auch seinen Bruder liebt,
und stets die Christenliebe übt.
