Ich danke meinen Gott für euch

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ich danke meinen Gott für euch” (J. Olearius, 1671) from the author’s Singekunst, for Trinity XVIII, a paraphrase of the Epistle from 1 Cor. 1:4–8.

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.

I THANK my God for you always,

For all the bounties of His grace

In Christ upon you made to show’r,

By Him enriched at every hour—

2 Enriched are ye in all, forsooth,

In all right doctrine, life, and truth,

E’en as Christ’s preaching was in you

With pow’r confirmed and proven true.

3 So that ye no wise come behind,

But teeming gifts among you find,

And wait until the hour concealed,

When Jesus’ coming is revealed.

4 He shall confirm and keep you fast

Nor will forsake you till the last,

That blameless and unstained ye may

Salute the awesome Judge’s Day.

GERMAN

Ich danke meinen Gott für euch,

für seinen Gnad, die allzugleich

in Christo euch gegeben ist,

daß ihr reich seid zu aller Frist.

2 In allen Stücken recih gemacht,

an aller Lehr und Lebenskraft,

wie denn die Predigt Jesu Christ

in euch recht kräftig worden ist.

3 Daß ihr nun keinen Mangel habt,

ihr seid mit Gaben reich begabt,

ihr wartent nur noch immerdar,

bis Jesus werde offenbar.

4 Der euch auch wird behalten fest

ans Ende, der euch nicht verläßt,

daß ihr unsträflich ohne Klag

kommt an des großen Richters Tag.

Halt euch nicht selbst für klug

Here my translation of the hymn, "Halt euch nicht selbst für klug" (J. Olearius, 1571), from the author's Singekunst for Epiphany III, the epistle Romans 12:16b–21.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

HOLD not yourselves as wise,

With evil pay no other

When evil ye are paid,

Nor curse against your brother,

Seek that in all men's sight

And in all honesty,

As much as in you lies,

Ye may live peaceably.

2 Do not yourselves avenge

For God is vengeance fitted;

Give place to wrath, the cause

To Him let be committed.

Then feed your enemies

By thirst and hunger bent,

That he his wrong may own

And of himself lament.

3 As he who on his head

Must feel the coal-fire burning,

So can the fire of love

Avert much sinful yearning.

That foe himself doth search

Ashamed berates his woe,

Which he hath wrought against

The one who loves him so.

4 Let evil in the world
Not thee o’ercome and smother.
Thou canst occasion find

To do good to each other.

For Christians ever must

Prepared and ready be

With good to overcome

What evil they may see.

GERMAN

Halt euch nicht selbst für klug,
ihr mußt ja nicht vergelten
mit Bösem böses Thun,
mit Scheltwort, Zank und Schelten,
seid fleißig jedermann
in aller Ehrbarkeit
zu zeigen euren Fried,
nach aller Möglichkeit.

2 Selbst rächet euch ja nicht,
gebt Raum dem Zorn und Rache
des, dem die Rache ist,
befehlt Gott alle Sache,
sepist und tränkt euren Feind,
den Durst und Hunger plagt,
daß er sein Unrecht selbst
erkennt und selbst beklagt.

3 Gleich dem der Kohlenfeur
muß auf dem Haupt empfinden,
so kann das Liebesfeur
auch wehren vielen Sünden,
der Feind geht in sich selbst,
er schämt sich, speit sich an,
daßerdem derihn liebt
zuwider hat gethan.

4 Laß dich das Böse nicht
in der Welt überwinden,
du kannst Gelegenheit
zum Gutes gar wohl finden,
das Böse muß ein Christ
mit Guten allezeit
zu überwinden stets
sein fertig und bereit.

Zuletzt seid stark in unserm Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Zuletzt seid stark in unserm Gott” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for the Epistle on Trinity XXI, Eph. 6:10–17.

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.

SAINTS, in the Lord our God be strong,
Who puts to shame the devil’s throng,
And in whose might the war is won;
Wherefore put His whole armor on.

2 We wrestle not ’gainst flesh and blood,
But th’ evil prince of hell’s abode,
Who now hath pow’r to rule the world,
And to their doom hath many hurled.

3 The spirit of the darkness, he—
The foe of good and verity;
Alone your God’s whole armor use,
Else ye the war will surely lose.

4 So when the evil day shall come,
Sleep not secure, with senses numb,
But forcefully the foe withstand,
And God shall give the upper hand.

5 With God victorious hold the field,
To whom alone earth’s prince will yield.
So shall the battle prosp’rous tend,
So shall the war in vict’ry end.

6 Stand therefore girt, your bodies dress
With godly truth and righteousness
As belt and breastplate; and your feet
With preparation dress, as meet.

7 The Gospel Word of peace employ,
Take up the shield of faith with joy,
Quench and disarm the fiery darts
Of Satan and his wicked arts.

8 The helmet of salvation take,
And Spirit’s sword, and battle make!
Who boldly wields God’s Word doth well,
And conquers all the gates of hell.

GERMAN

Zuletzt seid stark in unserm Gott,

das Schwert des Geists zum Widerstand;
wer freudig kämpft mit Gottes Wort,
der sieget ob der Höllen Pfort.

Nun ich ermahne euch

Here is my translation of the hymn “Nun ich ermahne euch” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Trinity XVII, the epistle reading. Ephesians 4:1–6.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

Or: O Gott, du frommer Gott.

A PRIS’NER of the Lord
For His own acclamation,
This I beseech you now,
Desiring your salvation,
That ye would follow me
Nor wander from the road,
But walk as ye are called,
As servants of your God.

2 Walk lowly, suff’ring long,
With meekness and forbearing
In Christian love, that ye
May strive to keep from tearing
In peace’s perfect bond
The Spirit’s unity
E’en as ye have been called
A Christian here to be.

3 There is one body and
One Spirit, God-appointed
Unto one hope; one Lord,
One faith, one font anointed,
One God and Fath’r of all,
The Father of the Son,
Above all and through all
And in all, mighty One.

Nun ich ermahne euch,
der ich jetzt bin gefangen,
jedoch zu Gottes Ehr,
und trag ein groß Verlangen
nach eurer Seligkeit,
folgt mir und wandelt nicht,
wie der Beruf mitbringt,
daß ihr seid Gottes Knecht.

2 Mit Demuth, mit Geduld,
mit Sanftmuth, mit Vertragen
in aller Liebe, daß
ihr fleißig mögt nachjagen
des Geistes Einigkeit,
dem werthen Friedesband,
wie ihr berufen seid
zu eurem Christenstand.

3 Ein Leib, ein Geist, auf eins
die Hoffnung ist gerichtet,
ein Herr, ein Glaub, ein Tauf,
ein Gott, der alles schlichtet,
ein Vater unser all,
der Vater Jesus Christ,
der überall, durchall
in allen mächtig ist.

Ihr wisset, daß wir all

Here is my translation of the hymn “Ihr wisset, daß wir all” (J. Olearius, 1671), appointed in his Singekunst for Trinity IV, the Epistle, Romans 6:3–11, of which it is a fairly close paraphrase.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.
Or: O Gott, du frommer Gott.

YE know we Christians all,
Who have been Baptism given,
Were baptized into Christ
And joined the ranks of heaven;
Baptized into His death,
Therefore with Him we here
Were buried into death
By Baptism’s waters dear.

2 Now like as from the dead
The glory of the Father
Freed from the bonds of death
And raised up Christ, our Brother,
So should we also now
In earnest Him pursue,
And here begin to live
A life completely new.

3 For if with Him we here
Together have been planted
In likeness of His death,
While life on earth is granted,
So shall we certainly
Be like Him at the end,
When we, raised up from death,
Shall to His joy ascend.

4 We know that our old man
Must here be crucifièd,
Which with but sinful deeds
Is ever occupièd;
The body dead in sin,
Sin’s service—these must cease,
When justified from sin,
Our course concludes in peace.

5 If we be dead with Christ,
Our heart this too believeth:
That we shall live with Him,
To whom faith’s hand now cleaveth.
We know that, being raised
From death and conqu’ring strife,
Christ Jesus dies no more,
And shall remain our Life.

6 No more death over Him
Hath its dominion grievous,
Although He died for us,
And buried was, to save us—
Yea, it was for our sake
He once to sin hath died,
Now lives He evermore
At God the Father’s side.

7 So reckon of yourselves
That ye to sin have dièd,
Although the pow’r of sin
Hath body and soul destroyèd,
Now live ye to God’s praise
And glorious majesty,
In Jesus Christ, who gives
Blest life eternally.

Ihr wisset, daß wir all
die wir getauft sind worden
in Jesum Christum sind
getauft, der Christen Orden
ist ja in seinem Tod
getauft, so sind auch wir
mit ihm begraben durch
die Tauf in Tod allhier.

2 Gleichwie nun Christus ist
erwecket vom Tod erstanden
durchs Vaters Herrlichkeit
befreit von Todesbanden,
so sollen wir auch nun
fein stets mit Ernst daran
daß wir ihm folgen, neu
zu leben fangen an.

3 So aber wir samt ihm
zugleich gepflanzet werden
zu gleichem Tod allhier,
weil wir noch sind auf Erden,
so werden wir gewiß
ihm endlich werden gleich,
wenn wir vom Tod erwecket
gehn in sein Freudenreich.

4 Wir wissen, daß das Kreuz
den alten Menschen kränket,
der nur auf sündlich Thun
stets früh und spat gedenket,
der Sünden Leib muß fort,
der Sünden Dienst hört auf,
wenn man von Sünd gerecht
beschließt den Lebenslauf.

5 So wir gestorben sind,
so sollen wir auch leben
mit Christo unserm Herrn
wir glaubens, wer wird geben,
wir wissens ja, daß er
vom Tod erwecket ist,
der hinfort nicht mehrt stirbt,
das Leben Jesus Christ.

6 Der Tod wird über ihn
gar keine Herrschaft haben,
ob er gleich ist für uns
gestorben und begraben.
Was er gestorben ist
der Sünd zu einem Mal
geschach für uns, nun lebt
er Gott ins Himmels Saal.

7 So haltet auch dafür,
daß ihr der Sünd gestorben,
obgleich der Sünden Kraft
hat Leib und Seel verdorben,
nun lebt ihr eurem Gott
zum Preis und Herrlichkeit
in Christo Jesu, der
euch schenkt die Seligkeit.

Seid gleich gesinnt einmüthiglich

Here is my translation of the hymn “Seid gleich gesinnt einmüthiglich” (J. Olearius, 1671), appointed in Singekunst for Trinity V as the Epistle hymn, being a paraphrase of 1 Peter 3:8–15.

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.

NOW be ye one in heart and mind,
Compassion have, as brothers kind,
Be pitiful and courteous all,
To high and low, to great and small.

2 For evil render evil not,
Repay not ill if ill be wrought
Rail not when railing ye receive,
Though men unjustly you aggrieve.

3 Contrariwise a blessing give;
Ye know ye so were called to live,
And that ye are the heav’nly heirs
Of blessings to which naught compares.

4 He that will live in quiet peace
And see good days and life’s increase,
Let him his tongue with care refrain
From all that may God’s honor stain.

5 Let evil not his tongue defile,
And let his lips speak without guile,
Let him all evil works eschew,
Do good, and always peace pursue.

6 The eyes of God, that all perceive,
Are on the righteous morn and eve,
His ears are open to their pray’rs,
The wicked horde His mock’ry bears.

7 His face against them is who here
Cause others anguish, toil, and fear;
And who is he that can harm you,
If to all others good ye do?

8 Who suffers here for righteousness,
Shall find prepared true blessedness.
Be not afraid, nor troubled be,
When terror in the world ye see.

9 Let God the Lord be sanctified
Within your heart, and so abide;
A Christian heart to God resigned
O’er cross and woe shall vict’ry find.

GERMAN

Seid gleich gesinnt einmüthiglich,
mitleidig gütig brüderlich,
barmherzig freundlich allesamt,
noch jedes Lebenstand und Amt.

2 Vergeltet ja das Böse nicht,
mit Bösem als die Bösewicht,
mit Schelten Scheltwort nicht ersetzt,
wenn euch gleich Ungebühr verletzt.

3 Dagegen segnet weil ihr wisst,
daß eur Beruf geschehen ist,
daß ihr gesegnet jederzeit
des Himmels Segens Erben seid.

4 Wer leben will in Fried und still,
wer gute Tage sehen will,
der schweige seine Zung mit Fleiß,
daß sie nichts red als Gottes Preis.

5 Kein Böses rede Zung und Mund,
kein Trug hab Lipp und Herzensgrund,
von allem Bösen wende dich,
thu Guts, such Fried beständiglich.

6 Die Augen Gottes sehen hie
auf die Gerechten spat und früh,
und ihr Gebet hört unser Gott,
der macht zu Spott die böse Rott.

7 Sein Angesicht steht wider sie,
die hier anrichten Angst und Müh;

9 Laßt Gott in eures Herzens Schrein
stets heilig wohl verwahret sein;
ein gottgeheligt Christenherz
muß überwinden Kreuz und Schmerz.

Ich halte es dafür

Here is my translation of the hymn “Ich halte es dafür” (J. Olearius, 1671), appointed in the author’s Singekunst for Trinity IV (Epistle), a paraphrase of Romans 8:18–23. The hymn may also be sung to “O Gott, du frommer Gott.”

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

I RECKON that our pains
And suff’rings that aggrieve us,
Which in this present time
Shall not subside nor leave us,
Are far from worthy of
The glory
‿and majesty
Which by eternity
In us revealed shall be.

2 The creature all doth wait
In earnest expectation
Until the sons of God
Receive manifestation,
And their estate is known,
Beyond this vanity;
Here to all temp’ral things
It now must subject be.

3 Because the creature too
Shall be from bonds delivered,
And from corruption deep
That fills this earth, be severed.
The bondage then shall pass,
But liberty stand stay
With glory when this world
At last shall pass away.

4 The whole creation groans
And travails in like measure,
Which in this vanity
Finds not its joy and pleasure;
We also groan within,
The mortal’s end to see;
The Spirit’s firstfruits yearn
For blest eternity.

5 We daily call to mind
And long for life in heaven,
For what adoption brings
And what we shall be given;
We wait to see redeemed
This body of decay,
When yonder God shall give
What gladdens us for aye.

GERMAN

Ich halte es dafür,
daß alles unser Leiden,
so wir in dieser Zeit
durchaus nicht können meiden,
sei ganz und gar nicht wirth
der Ehr und Herrlichkeit,
die offenbaren wird
an uns die Ewigkeit.

2 Denn alle Kreatur,
sehr ängstlich harrend wartet,
bis es wird offenbar,
wie doch soll sein geartet
der Gotteskinder Stand,
nach dieser Eitelkeit,
der unterworfen ist
hier aller Zeitlichkeit.

3 Weil auch die Kreatur,
wird von dem Dienst frei werden,
den die Vergänglichkeit,
aufbürdet dieser Erden.
Der Dienst vergeht, allein
die Freiheit wird bestehn,
mit großer Herrlichkeit
wann die Welt wird vergehn.

4 Es sehnt, es ängstet sich,
doch Alles mit uns allen,
die an der Eitelkeit
habn keinen Wohlgefallen,
wir sehnen uns auch selbst,
aus dieser Sterblichkeit,
des Geistes Erstling sehnt
sich nach der Ewigkeit.

5 Wir denken täglich dran
mit herzlichem Verlangen,
was uns die Kindschaft bringt,
was wir habn zu empfangen;
wir warten hier des Leibs
Erlösung jederzeit,
bis Gott giebt was uns dort
erfreut in Ewigkeit.

Seid ja demüthig, denkt

Here is my translation of the hymn “Seid ja demüthig, denkt” (J. Olearius, 1671), appointed in the author’s Singekunst for Trinity III as a meditation on the Epistle (1 Peter 5:6–11), of which it is largely a paraphrase. The melody is the same as that used for his hymn on the Gospel, but as before so here also I include a more familiar alternate.

Mel.: O Gott, du frommer Gott.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

BE humble, keep in mind
What powèr God possesses;
Recall His mighty hand
That soon destroys or blesses.
Your God shall you exalt
In time and season due:
Your care then on Him cast,
Who always cares for you..

2 Be sober, vigilant,
Because your adversary,
The devil walks about,
Inciting works contrary.
He as a lion fierce
That roareth fearsomely,
Seeks whom he may devour
For all eternity.

3 Resist him, as ye must,
Steadfast in faith’s assuring,
Well knowing the distress
Of brethren such enduring;
As long as they live yet
Here in the world, in grief
And woe, till woes at last
In death find their relief.

4 The God of grace, who hath
Been pleased to call and take us
To glory evermore,
And heirs of heav’n to make us
In Jesus Christ—the Same,
Who doth all help provide,
Will also strengthen you
When suff’rings here subside.

5 He who can us perfect
And stablish us forever—
Shall be in all distress
Our Help and Counsel-giver;
To Him be pow’r and might,
Praise, laud, and majesty,
From age to endless age,
Now and eternally.

GERMAN

Seid ja demüthig, denkt
was für Gewalt Gott führet;
gedenkt an seine Hand,
die manchen plötzlich ruuhret,
er wird euch schon erhöhn,
zu seiner rechten Zeit,
wärst eure Sorg auf ihn,
er sorget weit und breit.

2 Seid nüchtern, wachet stets,
denn euer Widersacher,
der Teufel, geht umher,
der alte Unglücksmacher,
gleichwie ein grimmer Löw,
der brüllet grausamlich,
der zu verschlingen sucht,
Leib und Seel ewiglich.

3 Dem soll und müßt ihr fest,
im Glauben widerstehen;
und wißt der Brüder Noth,
die auch solch Leid durchgehen,
so lang sie in der Welt,
in Trübsal, Angst und Noth,
hier leben bis die Noth,
sich endet durch den Tod.

4 Der Gott der Gnaden, der
uns hat berufen wollen,
zu seiner Herrlichkeit,
die wir ererben sollen,
in Christo Jesu, der
wird euch auch geben Kraft,
bei kleiner Leidenszeit,
der alle Hülfe schafft.

5 Der vollbereiten kann,
der uns kann kräftig gründen,
der wird in aller Noth,
Rath, Trost und Hülfe finden;
dem sei auch Ehr und Macht,
Lob, Preis und Herrlichkeit,
ohn Anfang and ohn End,
in alle Ewigkeit.

Gott ist die Liebe, wer bekleibt

Here is my translation of the hymn on Christian love, “Gott ist die Liebe, wer bekleibt” (J. Olearius, 1671), a paraphrase of the Epistle for Trinity I from 1 John 4, appointed for that occasion in the author’s Singekunst.

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.

OUR God is Love; and he that dwells
In love, as God’s command compels,
In God abideth, good or ill,
And God in him abideth still.

2 Herein hath love its perfect way,
And boldness in the Judgment Day,
For as He is, so too are we
Here in this world continually.

3 Fear cannot in this love be found,
For fear is e’er with torment bound;
But love out of the loving heart
All fear doth cast and bid depart.

4 Then let us love God ceaselessly,
Who loved us from eternity.
If any man say, I love God,
But harbor hate, it is a fraud.

5 He is a liar, full of shame,
Unworthy of the Christian name,
Who little knows of love and hate,
Which bear no friendship intimate.

6 For he that loves his brother not
Whom he hath seen, in lies is caught
When he saith “I love God,” whom he
Hath not seen. ’Tis hypocrisy!

7 We this commandment have, that he
Who loves God with sincerity,
His Christian brother too should love,
And Christian love unceasing prove.

wer herzlich liebet seinen Gott,
daß der auch seinen Bruder liebt,
und stets die Christenliebe übt.
