Lob sei dem allerhöchsten Gott (Lob sei dem allmächtigen Gott)

Here is my (new) translation of the hymn “Lob sei dem allerhöchsten Gott” (M. Weiße, 1531), the slightly revised, more common form of Weiße’s Advent hymn, originally beginning “Lob sei dem allmächtigen Gott.” For the earlier translation supplement in Walther’s Hymnal, a few stanzas were inserted into Gambold’s translation. Olearius includes it among the hymns for Advent II, though it applies to Advent generally. Here I provide a new and entire translation. The proper melody is given below from a 17th c. edition with bass.

Mel.: Lob sei dem allerhöchsten Gott.
 

ALL praise to God the Highest be,
Who hath beheld us graciously,
And sent to us His dearest Son
Begotten in the highest throne.

2 That He our Savior might us win,
And free us from the weight of sin,
And by His grace and truth, as King
Would us to endless glory bring.

3 O mighty grace, O sweet command,
O love profound, O gen’rous hand!
God works a work that never can
Be praised enough by heav’n or man!

4 The Maker of all creatures takes
Our mortal nature, feels its aches,
Despising not a woman poor,
Who in her womb the God-Man bore.

5 The Father’s Word eternal deigns
To take our flesh yet free from stains,
The Alpha and Omega gives
Himself for man whom sin aggrieves.

6 But what is man, and all he’s done,
That God should give for Him His Son?
What need of us hath Good divine,
That He should thus for us repine?

7 O woe to them that Thee dispraise,
That will not share in all Thy grace,
Nor hear Thy Son and what He saith—
On them remains God’s wrath, and death.

8 Alas, O man, which nothing know’st,
And thusly thy own King oppos’st.
Who comes to thee in lowliness
And kindly would thy griefs redress!

9 Oh, welcome Him with joy today,
Make in thy heart for Him a way,
That He may enter heart and mind,
And thou in Him all goodness find!

10 Beneath His feet thy reason place
In this His coming full of grace,
Subjecting to His majesty
The work of justifying thee.

11 If this thou do, then He is thine,
Keeps thee from hell by grace divine;
If not, then watch, for certainly
He heaven’s doors will close to thee.

12 The first time He to earth came down
He came in meekness, not a crown;
The second time shall fright’ning be,
And strike the wicked painfully.

13 But those who in Christ Jesus stand
Shall go to joy at His rigiht hand,
The angel choirs will them befriend
Where them no evils more offend.

14 The Father in the highest throne
With Christ His dear and only Son,
And with the Holy Ghost equally
Be praised and blest eternally.

Lob sei dem allerhöchsten Gott,
der unser sich erbarmet hat,
gesandt sein allerliebsten Sohn,
aus ihn geborn im höchsten Thron.

2 Auf daß er unser Heiland würd,
uns freiet von der Sündenbürd
und durch sein Gnade und Wahrheit
führet zur ewigen Klarheit.

3 O große Gnad und Gütigkeit!
O tiefe Lieb und Mildigkeit!
Gott thut ein Werk, das ihm kein Mann
noch kein Engel verdanken kann.

4 Der Schöpfer aller Kreatur
nimmt an sich unsere Natur,
verachtet nicht ein armes Weib,
Mensch zu werden in ihrem Leib.

5 Des Vaters Wort von Ewigkeit
wird Fleisch in aller Reinigkeit,
das A und O, Anfang und End
gibt sich für uns in groß Elend.

6 Was ist der Mensch, was ist sein Thun,
daß Gott für ihn gibt seinen Sohn?
Was darf unser das höchste Gut,
daß es so unserthalben thut.

7 O weh dem Volk, das dich veracht,
