Kaiser Augustus leget an

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Kaiser Augustus leget an” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Christmas Day. The hymn is followed by a rendering of the sequence Grates nunc omnes, which I include here, though no music was given; the music of the Latin sequence can be made to fit the text without much trouble (see my Lutheran Sequences). Herman’s note on melodies before this hymn reads: “The following Gospels from Christmas to the Sunday after Three Holy Kings’ Day [Epiphany], can also be sung to the melody “Von Himmel hoch da komm ich her,” or “Von Himmel kam der Engel Schaar, etc.” He then includes two melodies, both of which Gesius 1605 ignores, giving instead “Von Himmel hoch.”

FROM Caesar came the first decree
That all the world should taxèd be,
Then Joseph was to trav’ling roused
With virgin Mary, his espoused.

2 They twain from distant Naz’reth came
Ino Judean Bethlehem
And so it was while they were there
That Mary did her Infant bear.

3 In swaddling clothes she wrappèd Him
And laid Him in a manger dim,
Because there was no other room;
But to their aid did angels come.

4 The shepherds watch that hour did keep
O’er flocks in nearby fields asleep;
And lo, an angel bright them found,
The glory of the Lord shone round.

5 Fear not, behold! the angel said,
Good tidings of great joy I spread,
For unto you is born this day
The Savior, Christ the Lord, I say!

6 He will be found in Bethlehem,
As God through Micah did proclaim,
This sign to you shall meet your eyes:
He swaddled in a manger lies.

7 Then angel hosts sang suddenly:
To God on high all glory be,
Now peace on earth begins this night,
And men have gladness and delight.

8 Amongst themselves the shepherds said,
When from the scene the angels sped,
To see this thing now let us go,
Which God the Lord hath made us know!

9 They came with haste and found the place
Where Mary was, all full of grace,
And Joseph and the Babe so dear,
The little Jesus, lying there.

10 They saw it and made known abroad
Throughout the land this work of God,
From house to house they spread the word,
And wonder brought to all that heard.

11 That was no jest for Mary’s part,
She kept these words all in her heart;
The shepherds thence returned, each one,
And worshiped God and Christ His Son.

*12 Lord Jesus Christ, our thanks to Thee
For this Thy blest nativity,
Who as a Child wast born, and thus
Hast opened heaven’s gate to us.

Grates nun omnes.
Thank-off’rings render to Christ the Lord, true God,
Who took our flesh upon Him, bore the rod,
Destroyed the devil’s tyranny,
And from his yoke hath set us free.

Huic oportet.
To Him let us meetly,
With the angels, sing sweetly:
Glory be to God in the highest.

die erst Schatzung auf jedermann,
da macht sich Joseph auf die Fahrt
mit Maria der Jungfraun zart.

2 Von Nazareth ins Jüdisch Land,
in sein Stat Bethlehem genannt,
als sie nun waren kommen dar,
Maria ihr Söhnlein gebar:

3 Sie wickelt ihn in Windelein,
und legt ihn in ein Krippelein,
kein Raum sonst in der Herberg war
da dienten ihr der Engel Schaar.

4 Die Hirten wachten zu der Zeit,
bei ihrem Vieh im Felde weit,
und sieh, der Engel trat zu ihn,
des Herren Klarheit sie umschien.

5 Erschrecket nicht, der Engel sprach:
Ein große Freud ich euch ansag,
heut ist der Heiland euch geborn,
welches ist Christ der Auserkorn.

6 Den werdt ihr findn in Davids Stadt,
wie Micha das verkündet hat,
und das soll euch zum Zeichen sein,
er leit in einem Krippelein.

7 Alsbald sungen die Engelein:
Gott in der Höh die Ehr soll sein,
der Fried auf Erd wird nun gehn an,
die Menschen Freud und Lust solln han.

8 Als dann ein Hirt zum andern sprach,
als er die Engel nit mehr sach:
Laßt uns nun gehn und schauen an,
was uns der Herr hat kund gethan.

9 Sie gingen schnell und kamen dar,
da Joseph und Maria war,
da funden sie im Krippelein,
das herzeliebe Jesulein.

10 Darnach das Wort sie breitten aus,
im ganzen Lands von Haus zu Haus,
und er solchs hört entsatzte sich,
die Red war ihn gar wunderlich.

11 Maria war es auch kein Scherz,
sie schloß die Wort all in ihr Herz
die Hirtn gingen wieder darvon,
und preisten Gott und Christ sein Sohn.

*12 Wir danken dir Herr Jesu Christ
daß du ein Kind geboren bist,
und hast durch dein heilig Geburt
uns aufgethan des Himmels Pfort.

Grates nun omnes.

Danket dem Herren Christo dem wahren Gott,
der unser Fleisch an sich genommen hat,
und des Teufels Kraft zerstört,
und von seim Joch uns losgemacht.

Huic oportet.

Dem sollen wir alle,
samt den Engeln mit Schalle
singen Ehr sei Gott in der Höhe.
