Christus will euch nicht Waisen lan

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Christus will euch nicht Waisen lan” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from his Schöne Geistliche Lieder, with a setting for two choirs, a “prior” choir precenting, and whole choir, the former performing the first two lines of each stanza melodically, the whole choir singing the refrain in four parts. All the German lines rhyme with -an or -ahn, which I here replace with “-ee”/“-y.” In the music given, the first note in a high D (Discant D).

Mel.: Christus will euch nicht Waisen lan.

CHRIST will not leave you orphans, see!
His Holy Ghost your Helper will be.
  We hear these tidings joyfully:
God makes us glad, so blessed be He!

2 He suffers no false vanity,
The truth from Scripture gives us to see.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

3 He to repent calls you and me,
True faith finds pardon with certainty!
  We hear these tidings, &c.

4 He worketh what else cannot be,
Gives true faith, love, and patience for free.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

5 The way through trials knoweth He,
The world and Satan from Him must flee.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

6 Now heaven open stands and free,
Where Christians shall dwell eternally.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

Heut triumphiert mit Freud und Wonn

Here is my translation of the Easter hymn, “Heut triumphiert mit Freud und Wonn” (Anon., 16th c.), in ELGB #139. Fischer has no entry in his lexicon. It appears, i.a., in Stenger’s Christlich-neuverm. u. gebess. Gsb (1663), immediately following our previous hymn, “Der Heiligen Leben,” thus in the same order as the Buffalo Synod hymnal (with the same false attribution to Johann Spangenberg for the latter hymn). Our hymn has no attribution, but has the character of an early festival hymn or carol. The melody is more widespread, e.g., assigned to other texts in the old Ohio hymnal, GGELB #96. and in Hymns Ancient and Modern #205.

TODAY the Prince of Peace, God’s Son,
Christ Jesus, hath the vict’ry won (x2)
Praise Him with joy on heaven’s throne!
Alleluia! (x3)

2 The Man who on the cross was heaved,
And with all shame and pain aggrieved, (x2)
All might and rule hath now received.
Alleluia! (x3)

3 The Lord who in the tomb once lay
Is risen from the dead this day, (x2)
O’er him no foe has pow’r or sway.
Alleluia! (x3)

4 Now rage the devil, death, and hell,
God’s Son with us shall ever dwell, (x2)
The Champion He of Israel.
Alleluia! (x3)

5 Rejoice, dear Christians, gladly sing,
Oh, leap for joy! Your sorrowing (x2)
Is turned to bliss by Christ the King.
Alleluia! (x3)

Heut triumphiert mit Freud und Wonn
der Friede-fürst, Christ, Gottes Sohn,
der Friede-Fürst, Christ, Gottes Sohn,
preist und lobt Ihn ins Himmels Thron.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

2 Der Mann, der an dem Creuze hing,
groß Schmach und Marter da empfing,
groß Schmach und Marter da empfing,
ist jetzt ein Herr übr alle Ding,
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

3 Der Herr, der in dem Grabe lag,
ist auferstanden diesen Tag,
ist auferstanden diesen Tag,
Kein Feind Ihm was anhaben mag,

4 Es zürnen Teufel oder Höll,
Gotts Sohn ist worden unser G'sell,
Gotts Sohn ist worden unser G'sell,
der Held von dem Haus Israel,

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!

5 Freu dich, du werthe Christenheit,
hüpfe und spring, dein Jammr und Leid,

ist nun verkehrt in Seligkeit.

Mein Gott der wahres Gottes Sohn

Here is my translation of the Christmas carol, “Mein Gott der wahres Gottes Sohn” (Eckhard Leichner, d. 1690), from ELGB#42, another interesting selection by the Buffalo Synod hymnal from the Gotha Cantional (from at least 1646) with music for 3 voices by Johann Hermann Schein. I give the form of the melody from Kümmerle’s reproduction of König 1715 and the complex one from Freylinghausen 1745. Again, no melody is indicated in the Buffalo Synod hymnal, suggesting a copy of the Gotha Cantional or of its contents was present among the congregations.

MY God, the Father’s only Son
For me had such affection,
He left His high celestial throne
By His own free election
And in a servant’s station
He bore our sin, our souls to bless,
And won for us the righteousness
By which we have salvation.

2 Behold, the Maker of all things
Now in this manger lieth,
Looks lowlier far than earthly kings,
And eyes of man defieth,
Yet brings us highest glory.
He makes us rich by poverty,
That we may like the angels be.
What greater gift implore ye?

3 Oh, dearest Jesus, Savior mine,
Let me in truth possess Thee,—
Yea, let me evermore be Thine
And blush not to confess Thee!
Thou art my Joy, my Savior!
From death and sin Thou sett’st me free:
Then in both joy and misery
I’ll thank Thee now and ever!

GERMAN
Mein Gott der wahres Gottes Sohn
hat mich ja hoch geliebet,
daß er von seines Himmels Thron
sich in dies Elend giebet,
und wird ein Knecht auf Erden,
nimmt an sich unser Sünden-Leid,
erwirbet die Gerechtigkeit,
dadurch wir selig werden.

2 Sieh da, der Schöpfer aller Ding'
in dieser Krippen lieget,
zwar die Gestalt, so gar gering,
für aller Welt nichts tüget,
bringt uns doch hoch zu Ehren.
Sein' Armuth macht uns ewig reich,
Ihm selber und den Englen gleich.
Wer könnte mehr begehren?

3 Ach mein herzliebes Jesulein!
laß michs zu Herzen nehmen,
ja laß mich ganz Dein eigen sein
und Deiner gar nicht schämen.
Du bist mein Heil und Freude,
machst mich vom Tod und Sünden frei,
das ich dort ewig dankbar sey,
auch hier in Lieb und leide.

Heut triumphiern die Engelein

Here is my translation of the Christmas/New Year carol, “Heut triumphiern die Engelein” (Anon., 16th c.?), included in ELGB #39 and appearing early on in Melchior Franck’s Psalmodia sacra (1631) with SSATB setting; yet another surprising gem in the Buffalo Synod hymnal, which gives it the title “An old piece of choral music.” The proper melody is found in a more accessible 4-part setting in Zahn.

THIS day the angels sing for joy,
In choirs from heaven nearing
To praise the Lord, a little Boy,
In Bethlehem appearing:
“All glory through th’ incarnate Child
To God in highest heaven,
And peace to mankind reconciled,
Upon the earth be given!”
Pure Alleluias sing therefore,
All merrily resounding,
For God is with us evermore,
And men have hope abounding.

2 O Jesus dear, in mind and deed
Thou Champion great and glorious!
In wisdom Thou dost all exceed,
In battle art victorious!
We pray Thee counsel now provide,
Lest these dark times astound us,
For with his tricks on every side
The devil doth surround us,
To rob us of Thy Word’s dear light,
Where Thou art laid, O Savior,
As in Thy swaddling-cloths so bright;
O bind the cov’nant ever!

3 O dearest Jesus, King of all,
This too we pray: Oh, hear us!
Since Thou art made our Brother small,
Abide Thou ever near us.
No brother doth the other leave,
But standeth by him ever;
Then leave us not to pine and grieve,
But be our present Savior,
As now Thy needy people here
Must suffer grief and sadness,
Oh, grant us all a glad new year,
New comfort, and new gladness!

GERMAN

Heut triumphiern die Engelein
in himmelischen Chören,
und singen Lob dem Jesulein
zu Bethlehem geborn,
des Ehr' sei Gott im höchsten Thron,
dem Menschen Fried' auf Erden,
Gott sei versöhnt durch seinen Sohn,
der Er ein' Mensch ließ werden,
drum singt Hallelujah rein,
daß fröhlich tut erschallen,
bei uns sich selbst Gott stellt ein,
o wohl uns Menschen allen.

2 O Jesulein, von Rath und That
ein Held herrlich und prächtig,
niemals es Dir gefehlet hat,
weil Du an Weisheit mächtig.
Wir bitten Dich, schaff Du auch Rath
zu diesen bösen Zeiten,
da uns der Feind umgeben hat
mit List von allen Seiten,
Dein liebes Wort und Windlein
da Du ewig zu finden,
uns zu rauben, O Jesulein!
das Bündniß thu aufbinden.

3 Ach Du herzliebes Jesulein,
wir bitten gleicher Maßen,
wein Du bist unser Brüderlein,
wollst uns ja nicht verlassen.
Kein Bruder ja den andern läßt,
sondern thut bei ihm stehen,
drum thu' auch bei uns das Best',
thu' so lang' nicht zusehen,
wie jetzt Dein' arme Christen Schaar
so viel Unfall muß leiden,
verleih zum lieben neuen Jahr
uns neuen Trost mit Freuden.

Wir wollen alle fröhlich sein

Here is my translation of “Wir wollen alle fröhlich sein,” an Eastertide carol based on a pre-Reformation Latin song, Resurrexit Dominus. I take my version from Keuchenthal’s cantional of 1573 (the melody appears in Spangenberg’s Christlich Gesangbuchlein… 1568). The easy, familiar tune differs slightly from the later settings by Praetorius, etc.

REJOICE we all this Easter-tide!
For He is living who had died,
And all our wrongs are rectified.
Alleluia, Alleluia,
  Alleluia, Alleluia,
To Christ, Son of Mary, all glory be!

2. For Jesus, who endured our pain
Upon the cross, is ris’n again
All praise and glory His remain!
Alleluia…

3. The gates of hell He hath laid low,
And loosed the captives from the foe,
Now from eternal death we go!
Alleluia…

4. All laud and honor now be done
To God the Father’s only Son
Who Paradise for us hath won.
Alelluia…

5. Let all the Church then joyful be
And praise the Holy Trinity
This Easter and eternally.
Alleluia…

Der eingeborne Gottes Sohn,

Here is my translation of a carol on the nativity of Jesus, “Der eingeborne Gottes Sohn” (P. Herbert, 1531), based on “Vecny syn jednorozeny, Buh pravy,” the old Bohemian rendering of “En trinitatis speculum.” A three-stanza English carol from the Latin was done by G.R. Woodward, found in “The Cambridge Carol-book” (1924) with the title “The Mirrour of the Father’s Face.”

THE SOLE begotten Son of God
Very God from heav’n’s abode,
Came in flesh and gave us
His own life to save us:
Very low He humbled was,
The Lord and King of heav’nly hosts—
Through His incarnation
Brought us all salvation.

2. The Son whose Father is Most High
Chose a maiden meek and shy
Who by grace consented,
Thus in flesh presented
Him who would in Adam’s place
Repay our debts and win God's grace,
That He us might cherish,
And we never perish.

3. The One whom earth and heav’n obey
In a tender virgin lay,
Whom He had created
As in Scripture stated:
In but lowly rags is furled
The One who holdeth all the world,
Bedded in a manger,
Safely kept from danger.

4. Our human nature God put on,
His work did the Maker don,
And our flesh invested
With Godhead unbested:
He hath laid the devil low,
And let His chosen children go
Free from sin’s dark prison,
From new birth arisen.

5. For Adam’s sin and deadly fall
God forsook His heav'nly hall
With our grief was stricken
That He might us quicken.
Sin had cast us in the grave,
And no one else could help or save,
But the Seed that Mary
In God's grace did carry.

6. His name is called Immanuel,
As we hear from Gabriel:
God would dwell among us,
And from death would spare us.
That is why He sorely pined,
For great and small, yea, all mankind,
In death our willing Savior,
Bought us grace and favor.

7. By dying Christ our case has won,
Reconciled both God and man,
Raised us up in splendor;
So our praise we render:
Jesus Christ, all laud to Thee,
For Thou a man didst deign to be,
Our salvation willing,
All God’s anger stilling.

GERMAN
1. Der eingeborne Gottes Sohn,
wahrer gott vom höchsten Thron,
ist auf Erd erschienen,
uns allen zu dienen:
Er hat sich geniedert sehr,
der Herr und König aller Heer,
und wollen Menschen werden
hie auf dieser Erden.

2. Der Gott zu einem Vater hat
ist von einer armen Magd,
die er hat erkoren,
wahrer Mensch geboren.
Aufdaß er es Adams Schuld
bezahlen möcht, und Gottes Huld,
uns allen erwerben,
und nicht ließ verderben.

3. Dem alle Ding gehorsam sein,
hat ein zartes Jungfräulein
in ihrm Leib getragen,
wie die Schrift thut sagen:
Und geborn in Armut groß,
der alle Ding in sich beschloß
in ein Kripp geleget,
sein fleißig gepfleget.

4. Gott nahm an sich unser Natur
der Schöpfer ein Kreatur,
und verfügt die Menschheit,
mit der hohen Gottheit:
Der hat den Teufel gefellt,
daß er nicht mehr gefangen hält
Gottes Auserkorne,
in ihm neugeborne.

5. Um Adams Sünd und schweren Fall
mußt Gott vom himmlischen Saal
sich herunter geben,
daß wir möchten leben:
Denn die Sünd hat all verwundt,
darum auch niemand helfen kunnt,
ohn des Weibes Samen,
der aus Gnad ist kommen.

6. Sein Namen heißt Immanuel,
wie uns saget Gabriel,
Gott werd mit uns wohnen,
und unser verschonen:
Drum er auch sehr grosse Pein
gelitten hat für groß und klein,
ist willig gestorben,
hat uns Gnad erworben.

7. Mit seinem Tod hat er verricht
unser Sach bei Gott geschlicht,
uns herzlich erhaben,
dafür wir ihn loben:
Lob sei dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
daß du für uns Mensch worden bist,
uns dir hast erkoren,
gestillt Gottes Zoren. Amen.
