Hilf, Herr, daß ich in Tempel

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Hilf, Herr, daß ich in Tempel” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XI, with title “Of the Penitent Publican.”

Mel.: Herr Christ der einig Gotts Sohn.

HELP, Lord, that I may ever

With humble heart draw near

Thy temple, and may never

Take for example here

The Pharisee so hollow,

But may in praying follow

This lowly publican!

2 How far he stood that morrow,

All in a place apart,

With features full of sorrow,

His eyes cast down, his heart

And conscience thinking solely:

“I am unworthy wholly,

Upon this earth to stand!”

3 ’Tis naught to speak of lifting

My sinful eyes to heav’n!

For if by judgment’s sifting,

I were due wages giv’n,

How soon I would be leaving,

And far from heaven grieving,

Be ever damned to hell!

4 His hand then started stirring,

He smote and smote his breast,

He thought: “How many a scourging

I’ve earned, be it confessed,

With all my sins defiling!

Oh, for a reconciling

With God, and endless bliss!”

5 He sighed: “O God, be gracious,

Though I a sinner am!”

Without which reason precious

No man to bliss e’er came.

From deepest hell he even

Reached up to highest heaven,

Yea, Lord, up to Thy throne!

6 From heav’nly realms to earthly

Thy Son was giv’n in love,

Of all men’s trust most worthy;

By Him to Thee above

I’ll rise, with angels flying.

Thou wilt not bear my dying;

Thy promise is my life!

GERMAN

Hilf, Herr, daß ich in Tempel

nimmermehr anders komm,

denn wie das schön Exempel

uns Christen lehren thut:

Nich das der Pharisäer,

sondern der arme Zöllner,

mit seim Gebete gab.

2 O wie stund er so ferne

an sonderlichem Ort,

mit traurigem Gebärde,

sein Augen niederkahrt,

gedacht in seim Gewissen,

ich bin mit meinen Füßen

des Erdbodens nicht werth.

3 Schweig gen Himmel zu heben

mein sündlich Angesicht,

wenn Gott mir würde geben

mein Sold nach seim Gericht,

wie bald müßt ich gescheiden,

weit von dem HImmel bleiben,

ewig zur Hell verdammt.

4 Sein Hand ward drüber rege,

er schlug an seine Brust,

gedacht, wie manche Schläge

hab ich mit böser Lust,

ja, mit der That verdienet?

O wer, mit Gott versühnet,

möcht ewig selig sein!

5 Gott sei mir Sünder gnädig,

sprach er mit Hez und Mund:

Kein Mensch ist jemals selig

worden ohn solchen Grund:

Er reicht aus tiefer helle

hoch über alle Himmel,

Herr, bis zu deinem Thron.

6 Von dannen uns gegeben

dein Sohn aus großer Lieb,

ist werth, daß wir ihm gläuben,

der macht, daß ich nicht bleib

ewig von dir gescheiden,

mein Tod willt du nicht leiden,

dein Eid mein Leben ist.
