O wie Selig ist der Blick

Here is my translation of the hymn, “O wie Selig ist der Blick” (B. Schmolck, 1712) from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, first series, for Trinity XIII, with title: “Oil and Wine, Law and Gospel.”

Mel.:
Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

OH, how blessed are the eyes

Which behold Thee, Christ the Savior!

Fathers long who sought this prize
Were not granted such a favor.

Blest, therefore, those eyes must be

Of Thy faithful company.

2 Oh, how eagerly I would

Share in such a vision blessed!

Yet for now Thou deem’st it good

To keep such a sight suppressèd

From mine eyes, and lettest faith

View Thee now in hope till death.

3 Make Thyself this vision keen,

In the Word Thy sight be granted;

And if here some glimpse be seen

Let it in my heart be planted,

And this foretaste me suffice;

Fullness there in heaven lies.

4 As mine eye now cleaves to Thee,

Let my heart sincerely love Thee;

For Thou didst appoint for me

Such a law, as love did move Thee:

Heart and soul and strength and mind—

Thus may love its fullness find.

5 Grant me that my heart may be

True and ardent love forthshowing;

Let affection, Lord, for Thee

From my soul and strength be flowing,

That my being and my all,

Lord, may Thee its treasure call.

6  Let me love Thee far above

All that is in all creation,

As myself my neighbor love,

And in time and tribulation

Merciful and helpful be

Without all hypocrisy.

7 Yet the way to Jericho

Many icy hearts betrayeth;

And who loves his neighbor so

That he sees when grief dismayeth

And, like that Samaritan,

Hath compassion on the man?

8 Many heartless souls we see—

Priests and Levites passing coldly;

Let that, Lord, be far from me

Grant to me a heart that boldly

Loves my neighbors, and attends,

And their wounds in mercy mends.

9  Though all works cannot, I know,

Help to gain or merit heaven,

Yet my faith will florid grow,

Through such works, which God hath given,

And I will thereby be shown

To be saved by grace alone.

10 Thou, my Jesus, hast fulfilled

What no mortal pow’r fulfilleth;

From Thy wounds is freely spilled

What my wounds and sorrows stilleth.

Lead me from the robbers’ hand

To Thy blessed, promised land.

GERMAN

O Wie ſelig iſt der Blick/

Der/ O JESU/ dich erblicket!

Ein ſo angenehmes Gluͤck

Hat die Vaͤter nicht erqvicket.

Und ſo ſelig muß allein

Deiner Juͤnger Auge ſeyn.

2 Ach wie gerne wollt auch ich

Solche Seligkeit genuͤſſen!

Doch du wilſt itzunder dich

Meinen Augen noch verſchluͤſſen/

Ohne was mein Glaube kan/

Der ſieht dich in Hoffnung an.

3 Schaͤrffe ſelber dis Geſicht/

Daß ich dich im Wort erblicke/

Und wenn hier ein Blick geſchicht/

Dich gantz feſt ins Hertze druͤcke.

Dieſe Vorſchau iſt genung/

Dort iſt erſt die Saͤttigung.

4 Klebt mein Auge nun an dir/

Laß dich auch mein Hertze lieben.

Es iſt dis Geſetze mir

Von dir ſelbſten fuͤrgeſchrieben.

Hertz und Seele/ Krafft und Muth

Macht allein die Liebe gutt.

5 Gieb/ daß meine Liebe ſich

Aus dem Hertzen mag erguͤſſen.

Laß die Neigung gegen dich

Aus der Seelen Kraͤfften fluͤſſen/

Daß/ was in und an mir iſt/

Dich zu ſeiner Luſt erkieſt.

6 Uber alles laß mich dich

Auff der gantzen Erden lieben/

Und den Nechſten gleich als mich;

Gegen dem muß ich mich uͤben/

Daß ich ohne Heucheley

Seiner Noth Erbarmer ſey.

7 Doch der Weg nach Jericho

Zeiget uns viel kalte Hertzen/

Und wer liebt den Nechſten ſo/

Daß er ihn bey ſeinen Schmertzen

Wie der Samariter pflegt/

Und mit ihm Erbarmen traͤgt.

8 Mancher geht voruͤber hier/
