Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten, / und hält an dessen Worte fest

Here is my translation of the hymn “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten, / und hält an dessen Worte fest” (E. Neumeister, 1705), appointed in the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl for Trinity V, a “parody” or homage to the traditional hymn of the day for this occasion, Georg Neumark’s hymn “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten / und hoffet auf ihn allezeit” (1641), which, retaining the original first line of each stanza, gently tunes the direction to the thoughts and themes of this Sunday in particular. There are also a few references (or Easter eggs) to other favorite chorales on the theme of trust in God. To emulate Neumeister’s approach, for the first line of each stanza I have used Winkworth’s rendering as found in TLH 1941 (despite some awkwardness in st. 4 and 6, where I indicate in brackets something closer to the original), which should give some sense of how the hymn would have met the average congregant in 1705.

IF thou but suffer God to guide thee
And ever firmly keep His Word,
Nor let thy faith grow cold inside thee,
Nor by the worldly be deterred,
Thou dost the better part embrace,
And art of that true Christian race.

2 What can these anxious cares avail thee?
Be only of good cheer and see,
Tomorrow still God will not fail thee,
He as a Father cares for thee.
His precious Word this promise taught:
Who trusts in God, he lacketh naught.

3 Be patient and await His leisure
In hope and resignation true,
The blessing claim in bounteous measure,
That gladdens soul and body anew;
And when it falters, think alone:
“What God does, ever well is done!”

4 God knows full well when times of gladness […joyful seasons]
May serve, and sends them as He will.
He is not bound, like mortals’ madness, […by mortal’s reasons,]
To hours we think most free from ill.
Enough that He Himself best knows
How, where, and when good fortune flows.

5 Nor think amid the fiery trial
That God no longer thinks of thee.
Such thoughts are hardly worth the while;
In truth, He worketh wondrously;
’Twill surely at the last be clear
How much He loves and holds thee dear.

6 All are alike before the Highest— [To God it is a simple matter]
He can replenish oil and flour; [To fill again thy jar of flour]
Though for thy empty jar thou sighest, [And cruse of oil, and make thee fatter;]
He is all-wise and hath all pow’r.
He lives; there is no cause to dread
For our own life or daily bread.

7 Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving,
And hold His Word and dwelling dear;
Attend with diligence deserving
To thine employ and calling here.
Then shall it all be done as best,
And thou perceive how thou art blest.

Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten,
und hält an dessen Worte fest,
wer Herz und Andacht nicht erkalten,
noch sich die Welt verleiten läst,
der hat das gute Theil erwählt,
das ihn zu wahren Christen zählt.

2 Was helfen uns die schweren Sorgen?
Man habe doch nur guten Muth.
Gott sorget heut und sorget morgen,
mehr als ein treuer Vater thut.
Sein theuerwerthes Wort versprichts:
Wer Gott vertraut, der mangelt nichts.

3 Man halte nur ein wenig stille,
auf Hoffnung und Gelassenheit
erfolget Segen in der Fülle,
der uns an Leib und Seel erfreut.
Und wenns verzieht, so denke man:
was Gott thut, das ist wohlgethan.

4 Er kennt die rechten Freudenstunden,
und schickt sie, wenn es ihm gefällt.
Er ist an keine Zeit gebunden,
die unser Wunsch für glücklich hält.
Gnug, das er selbst am besten sieht,
wie, wo, und wenn das Glücke blüht.

5 Denk nicht in deiner Drangsals-Hitze,
als dächte Gott nicht mehr an dich.
Was sind doch die Gedanken nütze?
Er machets freilich wunderlich;

6 Es sind ja Gott sehr schlechte Sachen,
den leeren Krug und leeren Cad
mit Öl und Mehle voll zu machen.
Er weiß zu allen Dingen Rath.
So lang er lebt, so hats nicht Noth
um uns und unser täglich Brot.

7 Sing, bet und geh auf Gottes Wegen,
halt lieb und werth sein Wort und Haus,
und richte treu und angelegen
