Herr Jesu Christ, du Friedefürst

Here is my translation of the hymn “Herr Jesu Christ, du Friedefürst” (E. Neumeister, 1702), from the author’s Zum Gnadenstuhl for Trinity VI, another hymnodic homage recalling the original hymn on which it is based, Jacob Ebert’s “Du Friedenfürst, Herr Jesu Christ” included in Erbaul. Liedersam. and the Kirchenbuch f.ELGn  (cento tr. by Winkworth as “Lord Jesu Christ, the Prince of Peace and included in ELH Ohio), a hymn for peace in time of war. Neumeister subtly turns the theme in accordance with the Lord’s sermon in the Gospel Lesson.

LORD Jesus Christ, Thou Prince of Peace,
My King and Rock assured,
As Thou dost never change nor cease,
So hast Thou by Thy Word
Commanded all / men, great and small,
To seek peace, and pursue it.

2 But, oh, who doth consider this?
For hatred, strife, and war
And many other things amiss
O’er Christendom grow more.
The dearest friend / may soon offend
And prove thy fiercest rival.

3 Say, mortal, who dost vengeance plan
And in great wrath art caught,
If thou canst e’en be called a man,
(to say of Christian naught!)
How can thy mind / a moment find
To pray Christ’s pray’r sincerely?

4 Who lives and dies implacably
His due deserts receives;
He perishes eternally,
And in hell’s torment grieves.
Yea, such reward / comes from the Lord
On those who flesh are serving.

5 Lord Jesus Christ, Thou Prince of Peace,
In grace bestow on me
That, as Thou bidd’st, I ne’er may cease
To live here peaceably,
And Thee adore / forevermore
In heaven’s peace unending.

Herr Jesu Christ, du Friedefürst,
mein König und mein Hort,
wie du dich niemals ändern wirst,
so hast du durch dien Wort
auch jedermann Befehl gethan,
dem Friede nachzujagen.

2 Ach aber! wer bedenket diß?
Haß, Zwietracht, Krieg und Streit
und sonst viel ander Ärgernis
beherrscht die Christenheit.
Der beste Freund ist eh mans meint,
zum ärgsten Feinde worden.

3 Sag an, der du von Zorne brennst,
und voller Rachgier bist,
ob du ein Mensch nur heisen könnst,
geschweige denn ein Christ?
Erwäge doch, wie kannst du noch
ein Vaterunser beten?

4 Wer unversöhnlich lebt und stirbt,
der kriegt, was ihm gehört.
Indem er ewiglich verdirbt,
und in die Hölle fährt.
Ja, solchen Lohn trägt man davon,
wenn man dem Fleische dienet.

5 Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ,
du wollest mir verleihn,
das ich, wie mir befohlen ist,
versöhnlich möge sein;
