Dies ist der schöne Brunnen

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase “Dies ist der schöne Brunnen” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), based on Israel’s psalm of the well that God gave them in the wilderness, Num. 21, with subtitle: “It is a hymn of thanks, that we may use to praise God for the saving Word bestowed out of grace, etc.” The assigned melody is “Von Gott will ich nicht lassen.”

 


THIS is the well fair-seeming
Wherewith God hath us graced,
Beyond our fondest dreaming,
He hath giv’n us the best—
Our good and gracious God!
The princes of the nation
Have digged for their salvation
A thirst-allaying flood.

2 This work did help inherit
From nobles in the land,
Whom God with gifts and Spirit
Endowed by His own hand,
These shepherds doth the Lord
As teachers true provide thee,
With shepherds’ staves to guide thee
To understand God’s Word.

3 This well, the Spirit showeth,
Is God’s own Holy Word,
Which mighty good bestoweth
Where it is rightly heard
and in true faith received;
E’en as it purely ringeth,
Eternal life it bringeth,
And we are blest and saved.

Dies ist der schöne Brunnen,
damit uns Gott verehrt,
wie wirs an ihn gesunnen,
so hat ers uns beschert,
der liebe fromme Gott,
denn unser Fürsten haben
dem Volk ein Brunn gegraben,
als es für Durst litt Noth.

Darzu geholfen haben
im Volk die edlen Leut,
die Gott mit Geistes Gaben
begnade für andern weit,
dem Volk wohl fürzustehn,
das sind die Lehrer eben,
mit ihren Hirtenstäben,
Gotts Wort solltu verstehn.

3 Geistlich ist dieser Brunnen,
das heilig Gottes Wort,
Welchs bringet großen Frummen,
wo es recht wird gehort,
und angenommen fein,
in rechtem Glauben eben,
so bringts das ewig Leben,
alsdenn wir selig sein.

Es wollt der Herre segnen dich

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase, “Es wollt der Herre segnen dich” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), the 11th Old Testament “canticle” (not restricted to the traditional liturgical canticles) in Spangenberg’s collection, based on the Aaronic Benediction in Numbers 6, with title “The Christian church’s daily benediction psalm, Num. 6.” The appointed melody is “Es wollt uns Gott genädig sein.”

 


THE Lord His blessing set on thee,
Thy soul e’er safely keeping;
His mercy on thee constantly
Abound, awake or sleeping;
The Lord forgive thee graciously,
His face make shine upon thee;
The Lord lift up unceasingly
His countenance upon thee,
And give thee peace undying,
All blessedness supplying.

und lassen walten stetiglich,

Gelobt sei der Herr unser Gott

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase, “Gelobt sei der Herr unser Gott” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), the author’s 10th OT canticle, based on Moses’ father-in-law Jethro’s song from Exodus 18. The subtitle reads: “It is a thanksgiving for the deliverance. And it teaches what one ought to learn from the wondrous works and miracles of God.” The melody assigned is “Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ,” etc. Luther’s version of a popular medieval hymn for Christmas also recently formed the fitting framework for the 3rd OT canticle, “Blest be th’ eternal God, who hath” (Eliezer’s song).

 

BLEST be the Lord our God for aye,
Who His people from dismay
Delivered, and hath mightily
Redeemed them from the enemy,
Kyrieleis!

2 He saved them from th’ Egyptians’ hand,
Brought them out of Egypt’s land;
How best to lead them well He knows,
And keeps them safe from all their foes,
Kyrieleis!

3 Now I know that my God and Lord
O’er all gods must be adored,
He struck the foe down in their pride
When proudly they His own defied,
Kyrieleis!

2 Er half ihn aus der Feinde Hand,
führt sie aus Egyptenland,
er weiß sein Volk zu leiten fein,
daß sie für Feinden sicher sein,
Kyrieleis.

3 Nun weiß ich, daß mein Gott und Herr
größer ist den all Götter,
er straft an Feinden den Hochmuth,
den man seim Volk beweisen thut,
Kyrieleis.
