Die heilgen Engel allzumal

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase, “Die heilgen Engel allzumal” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), canticle no. 35, titled “The Seraphim’s Psalm of Praise, Isa. 6.” The assigned melody is “Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her,” with the notable difference that the same rhyme is used for all lines in a stanza.

THE holy angels one and all
Before God’s throne adoring fall,
On high in heaven’s lofty hall,
His works they laud with wondrous call.

2 Holy Lord God eternally!
Holy the Lord of hosts is He!
Holy the highest Majesty,
Whose hands hold all things certainly!

3 His glory fills all lands and ways,
His glorious might doth all amaze;
In all the world all laud and praise
Upon Him be for endless days!

GERMAN
Die heilgen Engel allzumal
singen für Gott mit großem Schall,
hoch droben in des Himmels Saal,
sie rühmen sein Werk ohne Zahl.

2 Heilig ist unser Herre Gott,
heilig ist der Herr Zebaoth,
ja heilig ist alleine Gott,
der alles in sein Händen hat.

3 All Land sind seiner Ehren voll,
darum man ihn auch preisen soll,
der Preis und Ruhm in aller Welt
billig nur ihm wird zugestellt.

O heiliger Vater, gütiger Herr

Here is my translation of a Sanctus hymn, “O heiliger Vater, gütiger Herr,” which is a Bohemian Brethren work that builds on the text of angelic hymn to the Trinity & the Benedictus est (“Blessed is He, or the Paschal Lamb, that cometh in the name of the Lord” ). The melody is from a 15th c. Sanctus setting in the 1st mode, as appointed for chief festivals in the Bohemian churches. I include the relevant entry from Thannabaur, Das einstimmige Sanctus . . . p. 130. And here is a good performance of the original Sanctus with the Trope "Gaude quam magnificat."

O
HOLY Father, bright / with grace’s light,
Creator, source of might,
Thou only God, / Lord of Sabaoth,
Thy grace is worthy of all laud.

2. The hosts around Thy throne / Thy pow’r make known,
And joyfully intone
With one accord / that great hymn adored:
The Holy, Holy, Holy Lord!

3. For heaven, earth, and sea / are utterly
Filled with Thy majesty,
Thy glorious praise / shines with peerless rays
O Lord and God of endless days!

4. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, / Thy shoulder broad
Bore all our sinful load:
Thy off’ring hath / stilled the Father’s wrath,
And freed us from eternal death.

5. O Jesus, thanks to Thee / that now we see
Thy peace eternally.
This hope we bear: / we that peace will share
In heav’n with Thee fore’er and e’er.

Heiliger ewiger Gott

Here is my translation of a hymn originally written as a vernacular Sanctus for Holy Trinity among the Bohemian Brethren, beginning "Heiliger, ewiger Gott…" (P. Herbert, 1531, 1566; see Kirchengesenge, 1588, fol. 104), which is also included in Keuchenthal's Kirchengesenge (1573), pp. 383–385, where it is appointed as the Sanctus for the feast of the Holy Trinity. The tune seems to be a modal variation on that of the ancient office hymn.

HOLY EVERLASTING GOD,
Holy Lord of Saboath
Holy, blessed Trinity,
Thine the glory ever be.

2. Father, Son, and Spirit, God,
Now receive our praise and laud;
Filled be earth from deep to height
With Thy glory, pow’r, and might.

3. FATHER of Christ Jesus, Lord,
God our Maker thrice adored,
Who uphold'st us by Thine hand,
Thine be thanks in every land.

4. Thou who sent’st Thy dearest Son
From Thy lofty heav’nly throne
To us in this vale of grief
To bring Adam’s sons relief:

5. Let us all, from high to low,
Thee and Jesus only know;
Thy Beloved grant, that we
May in Him accepted be.

6. JESUS Christ, Eternal Word,
Image of the Father, Lord,
His eternal Wisdom, Son,
Evermore Begotten One.

7. Unbegotten Deity
Essence from division free,
Yet in person Thou alone
Art the everlasting Son.

8. Jesus Christ, our thanks to Thee
Who a Man didst deign to be
To redeem man’s nature lost:
Save us by Thy precious cost.

9. HOLY GHOST, Thou Comfort fair,
Who from both proceedest e’er,
Equal glory is Thy due:
Make our heart and mind anew.

10. Stir within us godly fear,
Let our heart Thy Word revere,
Grant anointing by Thy pow’r,
Stay Thy Church at every hour.

11. Sanctify us and bestow
That we in Thy way may go;
And in Jesus’ righteousness
Come to heaven by Thy grace.

12. God who art in person three,
Yet in substance Unity,
Undivided, very God,
Ever Thine be praise and laud.

13. Hear us, Holy Majesty,
As we lift our pray’r to Thee
In Thy name: oh, kindly deign
To reply Amen, Amen.

Herr Gott, Schöpfer, heiliger gütiger Vater

Here is my translation of the troped music for the Holy Supper (The Ter Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Distribution combined) in the Bohemian Brethren practice: “Herr Gott, Schöpfer, heiliger gütiger Vater.” (M. Thamm, 1566), a reworking of “Boze wecny wsemohucy Otce Swaty.” I have taken it as responsive, and placed what would be the congregational parts in bold (the intonation being by the choir and/or cantor). The original rhyme scheme for these parts was AAA-BBB, but I found it impracticable with English, and have opted for AAB-CCB instead.

LORD CREATOR, holy and merciful Father,
1(R). Thou to us didst send the Savior,
Thy dear Son and our Deliv’rer,
Sign and pledge of Thine affection,
Us with endless joy supplying,
Us redeeming by His dying,
Rising for our resurrection.

2. Lord Christ, the very Son of God,
2(R). Born a Man by Mary, virgin,
That all those whom Thou hast chosen,
Might be saved and never perish.
Shameful death for us enduring,
From Thy body blood outpouring,
God Thou broughtest us to cherish.

3. Lord of mercy, Holy Ghost, so kind and tender,
Sweet Counselor, faith’s Defender.
3(R). Caller of Thy holy nation,
Sole Disburser of salvation,
Sanctifier and Amender,
By Thine inward operation,
Through Thy Word’s illumination
Ever dost Thou help and tend her.

4. Very God, Lord of Sabaoth!
4(R). One in substance, Whose creation
Finds outside Thee no salvation:
On Thy people met before Thee
In Thy name and at Thine altar,
Let Thy blessing rich not falter
As we praise Thee and adore Thee.

5. Heaven and Earth are overflowing
With Thy glory, power and might beyond knowing.
5(R). All our works are unavailing,
Earning only hell unfailing,
Of our shame we make confession,
Since our confidence is grounded
On Thy pledge, our hope is founded,
Thou wilt hear our poor petition.

6. True Lamb of God, Lord Jesus Christ
Advocate before the Father,
By Thine off’ring
Save us from judgment and suff’ring.
6(R). This need passes every other,
So we come to ask the Father
In Thy name for sin’s remission,
Yea, before His throne we venture,
Sure with Thee to meet no censure,
As we bring Him our petition.

Sung after the Prayer and Absolution [Entbindung]
(To the tune of Part 6.)
7. Now we rejoice in heart and mind,
Since Thou pour’st on us Thy favor
Through Christ Jesus,
Who all Thine anger appeases.
7(R). What He asks Thou ever grantest,
Wherefore doubt cannot prevent us
In imploring this Thy favor.
Thus our hearts are rendered fearless,
Since Thy mercy free and peerless,
Saves us from our sins forever.

Sung when the bread has been blessed.
(To the last tune.)
8. Christ Jesus, very Bread of heav’n,
Feed us with Thy flesh availing,
In our spirit
To gain Thy life and Thy merit,
8(R). As that night, when, Pasch completed,
Thy disciples twelve were seated
With Thee, whom Thy people savest;
And Thou tookest bread and saidest,
“This My Body is,” and feddest
That which Thou to torment gavest.

Sung when the cup has been blessed.
(To the last tune.)
9. Lord Jesus, very Man and God,
Quench us with Thy blood so precious,
That Thou sheddest
When on Golgotha Thou bleddest.
9(R). Then the cup Thou tookest merely
“This My Blood is” saidest clearly—
Which was spilled to buy us heaven.
All of them to drink Thou badest,
And remember Thee, who saidest
That herein Thyself is given.

(To the last tune.)
10. Praise be to Thee, Christ, very God.
For the mercy, love, and merit
That Thou showest,
And in Thy love here bestowest:
10(R). Grant us boldness here to move us
That we may Thy fellows prove us,
Henceforth living in all places
Godly lives, to Thee well-pleasing
Giving Thee Thy praise unceasing,
By the Holy Spirit’s graces.

2. Christe, du wahrer Gottes Sohn.
2(R). Von Maria Mensch geboren,
zu gut deinen auserkoren,
daß sie nicht würden verloren.
Hast für uns den Tod erlieden,
und dein Blut vom Leib geschieden,
uns gestellt mit Gott zufrieden.

3. O gütiger und milder Gott, heiliger Geist,
der du ein süsser Tröster heißt.
3(R). Du versammlest Christi Gmeine,
theilst ihr aus das Heil alleine,
machst sie heilig, schön und reine.
Durch dein innerlich Anregen
und durch deines Wortes Segen
thust du ihrer allzeit pflegen.

4. Wahrer Gott, Herre Zebaoth
4(R). Der du bist ein einigs Wesen,
ohn welchs niemand kann genesen,
dich wir loben und anbeten.
Weil wir uns in deinem Namen,
zu deim Tisch versammlet haben,
segne uns reichlich von oben.

5. Voll sind die Himmel und die Erden,
deiner Ehren Herrlichkeit, Kraft, Macht und Würden.
5(R). Unser Thun ist nicht zu rühmen,
sondern vielmehr zuverthümen,
des wir uns all müssen schämen.
Jedoch steht unser Vertrauen
auf dein Zusag, drauf wir bauen,
du wirst unser Bitt anschauen.

6. O Lämmlein Gottes Jesu Christ,
der du unser Fürsprecher bist,
für deim Vater,
versöhn uns heut mit deim Opfer.
6(R). Dasselb ist uns hoch von Nöthen,
darum wir auch wollen beten,
in deim Namen dazu treten.
Uns zum Vater herzlich kehren,
hoffend er werd uns erhören,
was wir bitten des gewehren.

Sung after the Prayer and Absolution
(To the tune of Part 6.)
7. Des freut sich unser Herz und Geist,
daß du auf uns dein Gnad ausgeußt,
durch deinen Sohn,
der uns vertritt für deinem Thron.
7(R). Denn du thust ihm nichts versagen,
derhalb wir kein Zweifel tragen,
warum wir gebeten haben.
Das macht unser Herze freidig,
weil du dich erzeigst so gnädig,
und machst uns von Sünden ledig.

Sung when the bread has been blessed.
(To the last tune.)
8. Christe du wahres Himmelbrot,
speis uns heut mit deim Fleisch so gut,
im Gewissen,
laß uns deins Lebens genießen.
8(R). Wie du nach deim Abendessen,
da du selbst zu Tisch gesessen,
deine Jünger thatest speisen.
Nahmst das Brot und sprachst gar eben:
“Das ist mein Leib, der gegeben
wird in Tod zu eurem Leben.”

Sung when the cup has been blessed.
(To the last tune.)
9. O Jesu wahrer Mensch und Gott,
tränk uns auch mit deim theuren Blut,
welchs mit Schmerzen
am Kreuze rann aus deim Herzen.
9(R). Darnach nahmstu auch den Kelich,
“Das ist mein Blut,” sagst du klärlich,
welchs aus dir floß offenbärlich.
Hießest alle daraus trinken,
dabei deiner Zugedenken
daß du dich uns selbst thust schenken.

10. Lob sei dir Christe, wahrer Gott,
für solche Gnad, Lieb, und Wohlthat,
die du preisest,
und herzlich an uns beweisest.
10(R). Gib, daß wir gestärkt auf Erden,
deines Lebens Mitgnoß werden,
hinfort Gottselig geberden.
Das verleih uns, Gott, von oben,
durch des heilgen Geists Gaben,
daß wir dich hie und dort loben.
