Gelobt sei Gott, der meine Schmach

Here is my translation of the canticle paraphrase, “Gelobt sei Gott, der meine Schmach” (C. Spangenberg, 1582), no. 23, with title “David’s psalm when God protected him so that he was not overtaken by mad Nabal, 1 Sam. 25,” and subtitle: “It is a psalm of thanksgiving that God protects from His own vengenace and likewise rebukes the ungodly.” The assigned melody is “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.”

 

BLEST be the Lord, who my disgrace
Revenged on Nabal for me,
Witih pow’r mine anger did efface,
And with His might restore me,
And from iniquity,
Well defended me,
Lest I should in wrath
Sin, and incur my death—                   
He hath Himself avenged me!

Gelobt sei Gott, der meine Schmach
am Nabal hat gerochen,
an meinen Feind geübet Rach,
und sein Gewalt zerbrochen,
und für Missethat,
mich behütet hat,
daß nicht im zorn ich
greulich versündigt mich,
selbt hat ers im vergolten.
