Here is my translation of the hymn, “Was ist gemeiner je auf Erd” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Trinity VI, the second hymn, with title “On avoiding wrath.”

Mel.: Dies sind die heilgen zehn Gebot.

 

THIS earth no vice more common hath

Than that a man responds in wrath

To all offenses great and small!

A stubborn heart filleth all,

Kyrieleis!

2  How many_a man hates wrongfully!

And if he may do harm to thee

All free from fear or ruler’s sword,

His wrath on thee is outpoured,

Kyrieleis!

3 Yea, he who bears an injury

And hath his wrong proved patently,

Insists upon the right to rage,

And oft with fist doth engage.

Kyrieleis!

4 Such vices in our world abound,

Examples everywhere are found;

And in the Christian church, what’s more,

The people rage and make war,

Kyrieleis!

5 The Christian name they still would claim

And enter heaven all the same

To feast with Jesus Christ for aye,

And let no man bar their way,

Kyrieleis!

6 But what doth Jesus say thereto?

Whoever would in wrath undue

His brother Raca call, and fool,

Deserveth hell’s fiery pool,

Kyrieleis!

7 Yea, he must perish evermore,

In hellfire, far from heaven’s door:

Oh, what else can more foolish be

Than thus to die stubbornly?

8 Let none with hatred be defiled,

First let disputes be reconciled,

Ere for the temple ye begin—

God help us all to go in,

Was ist gemeiner je auf Erd,

denn daß ein Menschen zornig werd,

um Ursach willen groß und klein?

Ein jeder pocht auf die Stein, 

Kyrieleis.

2 Mancher trägt unbllichen Haß,

und wenn er dir könnt schaden was,

ohn Furcht und Straf der Obrigkeit,

müßtest du leiden noch heut,

Kyrieleis.

3 Geschweig der so verletzet ist,

und seinen Schaden hat beweist,

der will zu zörnen haben Recht,

oft mit der Faust selbst drein schlägt,

Kyrieleis.

4 Das ist gemein in aller Welt,

nirgend es an Exempeln feilt,

auch bei uns in der Christenheit,

zürnen un dzanken die Leut,

Kyrieleis.

5 Wollen gleichwohl gut Christen sein,

stracks ungewährt in Himmel gehn,

zu sitzen mit am Tisch des Herrn,

das soll kurzum niemand wehrn,

6 Aber was sagt Christus darzu?

Wer zürnt, daß er den Mund aufthu,

mit Rach sein Bruder heiß ein Narrn,

ist schuldig hinabzufahrn,

Kyrieleis.

7 Hinab in das hellische Feur,

das ist weit von des Himmels Thür:

Was könnt doch närrischer geschehn,

denn solchen Weg störrisch gehn?

8 Das laßt euch allen sein gesagt,

was Hadder ist, zuvor vertragt,

wenn ihr zum Heiligthum wollt gehn,

Gott helf uns allen hinein,
